Lows j. M aztbzas DeVilbiss made its greatest sacrifice for the war effort in giving up Louie. Formerly holding the official title of Director of Extra-Curricular Activities, as well as sharing the burdens of Senior Class Advisorship with Mrs. King, Louie was constantly engaged in directing Tad and Taddy as they planned club and social affairs of all kinds. His talents also include stage directing, our traditional DeViltries having continually owed their success to his inspiring supervision. His office, once so constantly occupied by Tadites seeking advice on all manner of things, is waiting, as is DeVilbiss, for his return from his present important duty-that of insuring the right of all young Americans to enjoy the benefits of a high school education. 6 ll. 1 sf .L - jLX JA fkxk L . ' euetxsmrq one 5119 SPl'iUg day in 1943, a certain naval lieutenant, Louis Mathias-known herea- bouts as Louie -having been given leave from his naval duties, decided to see what the home folks were doing. A few hours later an important telegram arrived at DeVilbiss High School, where Mr. Nauts read it, and hurriedly sent for Tad and Taddy. The message he read them was a source of great excitement and flurry. Louie was on his way home! The wel- come mat was thrown out, banners were wav- ing and the band was playing when Louis arrived. And you, dear readers, are just in time, for that fine spring day is Now, and Tad and Taddy are You! Let's show Louie what our con- tribution to the war effort has been! Faculty and students alike have plenty to tell. Our members of the faculty have set commend- able examples by serving in civilian defense ac- tivities, planting victory gardens and taking X. nfhp Wo' AJ' ,..,f-Aff x-fx et's Show Louie shop courses, some even leaving to join de- fense industries and the armed services. Honors to them! And now Tad and Taddy, itls your turn. Your record includes both class room and out- side activities. You have taken part in special war time courses: aeronautics, shop, math, chemistry, and physics, to prepare you for your future parts in the war effort. You have started a Victory Corps, through which you are render- ing valuable community service. You have taken pre-induction military training. You have given your time and money inWar Chest and Red Cross activities, and have, in numerous other ways com- piled a record well worth showing Louie. What do you think of us, Lieutenant Mathias? Our part has been small, we know, but each passing week will see that part become greater until the victory is won, and you come home again-to stay! Honors to them www f? How closely the past, the present, and the future seem to intertwine as we stand at the climax of one life and at the beginning of another. How easy it is to recall our first dazed wanderings through the halls of DeVilbiss-our keen excite- ment at being in high school-our flrst dance, the Freshman Frenzy. Pictures of class room and club activities flash through the mind as our second and third years go by in retrospect-the Blackout,,' our Sophomore Prom, the J-Hopg Growing Pains, our junior Playg the Junior- Seni'or Farewell Dance. Our present year has seen changes brought about by the war, but we have been very fortunate in maintaining an almost normal schedule of activities. We held our Mid-Winter Dance at the Women's Building in honor of our football squadg we celebrated our Senior Prom at the Trianong we . . . . .JACK HARBAUGH . .. .. .. .BETTY HOYT . . . BARBARA WELDAY ..........f.DONRUFF enjoyed a Senior Banquet followed by a Farewell Dance at which we were feated by the Juniors. Soon, Collingwood Presbyterian Church will see us at Baccalaureate Service. We will be gradu- ated at the Colony Theater this year since the University Field House, where graduation has been held in former years, has been taken over by the Army Air Corps. Thus, as we come upon the termination of our high school days, we are at a pause between yesterday and tomorrow. The future is so close we can reach out and touch it. To many of us it means going into the Services of our country, to some it means taking positions here at the home front in industry, to others, it means preparing for a better America through a college education. All of us realize that our task is ready for us-to win this war, and to make from it a future bright with the reality of our present dreams. The'Student Council this year was under the leadership of Charles Clark during the first semester, and continued under the presidency of Dick Crumley for the second semester. Among its accomplishments were the forma- tion of the Victory Corps, the sponsorship of the tax Stamp collection-from which the school netted fifty- one dollars, and the preparation of a scroll letter to Lieutenant Mathias upon which students and teachers wrote messages. The Council is divided, after the pattern of the U. S. Congress, into two houses-the Senate, and the House of Representatives. The Senate is composed ofjunior and Senior home room delegates, while the Freshmen and Sophomores make up the House of Representatives. Presiding over the House is the Speaker, who this year was Chester Conzett. In the two houses, or the Congress, is invested the power to make regulations concerning school organizations and general conduct about the school. The executive power is vested in the President of the Council, and a Board of Commissioners appointed by him. DeVilbiss has long had a Student Council, but only since last year has it been organized along the lines of the most notable democratic assembly in the world. Its successful record so far has made it an outstanding example of democracy in action. The Feezrful Four STUDENT COURT JUSTICES-Mort Edgington, Chief justice, Dick Ehrhardt, Gordon Gettum, Betty Gracemeyer. To these four students goes the task of determining what to do with Tad when he prefers the great outdoors to the school room, or Taddy when she chooses Tyrone Power over the three R's. Picked from the general student body, they mete out penalties for sundry offenses, are responsible for Taddy's wiping dishes in the cafe- teria, or Tad's staying in after school at night. Constantly on the alert for avenging mischief-makers, they must be especially careful not to be pushed down the stairs or out windows as this would necessitate appointing a whole new Student Court. They have done a satisfactory piece of work, however, both in judging well and wisely, and in avoiding all physical dangers connected with their jobs, the proof of which lies in the improved behavior of num- erous Tadites, and in the healthful existence of all four justices. Q 0 T-3 Simrlq A Service 01105 Two short years ago, with a small group of stu- dents as a nucleus, and Mr. Raymond Lowry as advisor, the DeVilbiss Service Corps was created. Today, many of the students from that first group are gone, but the service Corps carries on. In that two years much has been accomplished. It has become a highly efficient body, ready at any time to serve the school, for the Corps was and is dedicated to one aim, one purpose-serving DeVilbiss. The Corps does not as a rule function 46 as a whole, but rather through the different squads. These squads work as ushers and guards at foot- ball and basketball games, they work on the hall patrol, the library patrol, they work any place, anytime, in all kinds of weather. Each squad has its own set of ofhcers, elected by the squad itself. Each squad is a small army within itself, and yet all these armies work together for the good of all. And so for doing a great job and doing it well, we offer a salute to the DeVilbiss Service Corps. Q A or 47 BW-his 64 -2 ' Q DD Tad and Taddy are in the Victory Corps! They're backing up the man behind the man behind the gun by joining this nation-wide organization of young people designed to coordinate and encourage activities contri- buting to the war eifort. Tad himself soon may be the man behind the gun. Who knows? And Taddy wonit be far behind. No knitting needles for her! If she's not turning out jeeps, she'll be victory gardening for dear life. But whatever tomorrow brings, they'll be better pre- pared for having belonged to the Victory Corps. The Victory Corps is divided into five special service divisions: Air Service Division, Land Service Division, Sea Service Division, Production Service Division, and Community Service Division. The general aim of these divisions is two-fold: C11 the training of youth for that 'B?.QLx SMH war service that will come after they leave school, and C25 the active participation of youth in the community's war effort while still in school. First of the units to be organized was the Air Service Division, pioneering with approximately eighty mem- bers. The aim of this group is to widen the sphere of aeronautics knowledge by daily preparation in pre-Hight courses. This group has come a long way towards real- izing its goal by constructing plane models, reading Current Aviation papers, and training in plane identi- flcation. Miss Larkin is advising this division, whose student leader is Gene Zackrisson. March 18th was the organization date of the Sea Ser- vice Division, led by Mr. Stalker. Induction included seventeen members with a nucleus of ten boys with past WQPP5 experience in Boy Scouts or Sea Scouts who will act as leaders, as officers, and as instructors. The main objec- tives of the division are physical fitness and training for service. Service preparation will include training for seamanship, signaling, Morse Code, elementary naviga- tion, learning rules of the road for both fresh and salt- water navigation, nomenclature of ships, types of ships, and the international rules. Charter members will par- ticipate in a program of military drill in classes which are being held for all high school boys. The Community Service Division organizes our school junior Red Cross, Home Nursing girls, students partici- pating in money raising campaigns for war purposes, assistants in air raid drills, and other similar groups into one unit working to serve their community. The Home Nursing girls have done outstanding work in their volunteer hours outside of school at various hospitals. They have made surgical dressings, rolled bandages, and assisted dieticians. Other girls have knitted or taken care of children whose parents are in industry. One of the junior Red Cross projects this year was the supply- ing of army camp amusements. Magazines, candy bars, records, sheet music, and books have been sent to the boys in service. Red Cross sewing has been another major project. There is a Red Cross disaster corps to help in refuge shelters. In the Community Service Divi- sion is included also our school organization for air raid a aa e drills. A few of our students have even become full Hedged air raid wardens. One of the most recent activi- ties of the division was the distributing of WAAC post- ers for display in store windows. Betty Galliers is the student chairman under the guidance of Miss Bloom, Miss Miller, and Miss Van Noorden. The Production Service Division of the Victory Corps combines industry and agriculture. In our shops, stud- ents are preparing for service in war industry to relieve the critical manpower shortage. Thousands of addi- tional worker are needed in factories manufacturing air- craft, munitions, and special war equipment, and we are proud that so many of our students are training to be the man behind the gun. Albert Ahlers is the student chair- man ofthe groupg Mr. Balsam is the advisor. Other home front soldiers are the victory gardeners. Four hundred students are participating in the agriculture branch of the Production Service Division. Meetings were held to give instructions for planning and planting. Head gar- deners are Mr. Diller, Mr. Coontz, Mr. Nauts, Mr. H. Emery, Miss Dickey, and Mr. Kiker. The Land Service Division of the Victory Corps is aimed to make the greatest possible number of pupils physically lit to carry on as members of the armed forces or as eihcient workers. With this objective in mind our physical training program has been intensified under the leadership of Mr. Norman Kies. 5.4 L.J l 1 ' WAR 43292-5 Sunil ,ix X I fm i ? Small mfsity The DeVilbiss Tigers of the gridiron, led by Head Coach Ollie Klee, went through an up-and-down season. The highlight of the season was the Libbey game on Thanksgiving morning. In wind-swept Page Stadium the mighty Libbey Cowboys, undefeated in eighteen games, lined up to slaughter the DeVilbiss Tigers. The whistle blew and the battle began. For the lirst half the game waged unchecked but no advantage was gained by either side. After the rest at the half, the battle began again, continuing until it seemed that the game would end with no score for either side. But fate deemed other- wise, and with only four minutes to play, the Cowboys blocked a Tiger punt behind the goal line and fell on it for six pounts. That was the score at the end ofthe game. A member of the armed forces must be in shape, and so must the future members also be. Full swing ahead for the winter season of exercises and a little basketball, team sports, and more junior antipathies for modern dance. G. The Girls' Athletic Society, managed by junior officers for the first time, had one of its most successful years, socially and athletically. We took in the green-horns October 23 at a Freshman Mixer at Ottawa Park. Remem- ber the wonderful cider and the soap-box speeches? And then who could forget the hayride on November 29, when we all nearly froze to death? Drip-drip-drip was the theme A. The climax to the basketball season was held in the boy's gym where the seniors played the juniors. CBut we donlt talk about thatlj Ah, spring! The boid is on the wing! And some of the gals wished that they had wings so they could fly around the field instead of run- ning the two lengths-after which they had to take the whole period to recuperate. The rest of the season was spent in baseball and- exercises. In spring a young man's fancy turns to- tennis, and this year he had real reason to be thinking of such.
