One hundred years ago the policy was begun of bestowing the Head Boy award for academic excellence, and since then this practice has been continued each year. We beleive that the basic principle behind such an award is what is known as the Pursuit of Excellence. Our academic standards testify to this belief, and in that reslpect we can be justly proud of ourselves. To s ow our readers this pride, which exists for us in athletics as well as in academics, is the purpose of the Chevron, and in 1959 we have tried especially to do this. However, one request we must make of you: as you read through this book, remember that DeVeaux has never quite been able to swallow the educate-the-mass fallacy. To our patrons and advertisers we give our heart-felt gratitude- not merely as a formality, but because they have played their indispensable role far beyond expectation.
