The infamous effects of House Bill 72, the normal injur- ies, and the lack of ex- perience changed the season into a rebuild- ing year. . We lost five start- ers from last year be- cause of injuries or grades. Also, we had six players starting that didn't even play last year, said Coach Mike Welch. Senior halfback Tom Neylon, an All- District player last year, injured his knee in the opening district NOT AGAIN! When the guy tripped me and l hurt my knee, l had no idea that l would miss my senior season. l hated sitting on the sideline and watching my team lose, Ney- lon said. The IV boys fol- lowed the varsity in a similar way by having more losses than wins. Sophomores Welsey Wakefield and luan Guajardo led in scor- ing goals. The team topped off the season by playing the best ever in the last game against Grand Prairie. Guajardo scored his last goal of the season in a grand way. He shot from about 35 yards out- it was re- markable! said Coach Welch. bring no he arrival of a new coach usually brings a hope for improve- ment over the past season. The girls soc- cer team, coached by left Hilburn, lost this trace of hope in,the middle of the season. They proved to be clearly inexperienced compared to their op- ponents such as Dun- canville, the state champion, and Bishop Lynch. The teams from Bishop Lynch and Duncanville were composed ot mostly seniors. We had an extremely young team with a majority ot sophomores and ju- niors compared to the others. l believe the problem was because the program was only 1 12! Girls Soccer STRETCHING OUT, sophomore Stephanie Alvarez throws the ball down the sideline to start an offensive play against Arlington. Photo by phoioqraph y class hanges change in its third year, said Coach I-lilburn. The lack of quality practice time also hin- dered the players' hopes. The winning teams such as Bishop Lynch, Duncanville, and Grand Prairie practiced in the ott- season and also dur- ing school time. Practicing after school until 5:45 p.m. was very long and tir- ing, especially when some of the girls had to go to work atter that. I think that the program should have been more like the others and have a class period for the team as well as an ott- season program, said senior Allison Hen- derson. by Michelle Howell TRYING TO gain pos- session of the ball, soph- omore Laurie Ellison chases after a Grand Prairie player attempt- ing to score a goal.
