ight years old, working with a p u l le y s e t made out of sand buckets, and swim- ming at Sprague Pool eventually led to working with ad- vanced hydraulic equipment and swim- ming at a pool in Las Colinas. Between the span ot years, lenniter Mel- ton, DHS's swim team, has had her share ot success. oing from pulleys to pools swimmers lead Way As a freshman, len- niter ended up ninth at the high school state meet, and as a sophomore at the state meet she had an im- pressive victory allow- ing her to claim the ti- tle ot High School State Champion . However, her junior year she had various injuries which forced her to sit out a year. My sophomore year, I changed clubs and the new atmo- sphere and coaches really gave me a litt and I did well, but atter a year the drive really got to me and l burned out, com- mented Melton. During the 83-84 and 84-85 school years she drove to Fort Forth every day atter school to work out. Her senior year the club she worked out with changed its location to Las Colinas and Melton started to state swimming again. Finishing a disap- pointing lOth this year at the state meet was somewhat padded when she accepted a scholarship to Texas ASIM. The infamous effects of House Bill 72, the normal injur- ies, and the lack of ex- perience changed the season into a rebuild- ing year. . We lost five start- ers from last year be- cause of injuries or grades. Also, we had six players starting that didn't even play last year, said Coach Mike Welch. Senior halfback Tom Neylon, an All- District player last year, injured his knee in the opening district NOT AGAIN! When the guy tripped me and l hurt my knee, l had no idea that l would miss my senior season. l hated sitting on the sideline and watching my team lose, Ney- lon said. The IV boys fol- lowed the varsity in a similar way by having more losses than wins. Sophomores Welsey Wakefield and luan Guajardo led in scor- ing goals. The team topped off the season by playing the best ever in the last game against Grand Prairie. Guajardo scored his last goal of the season in a grand way. He shot from about 35 yards out- it was re- markable! said Coach Welch.
