7 ittle kids play- ing putt putt , what a familiar site. Advancing on to bigger and better things, several talent- ed students contribut- ed their golfing skills to the golf team to make a successful year. GETTING READY for district, Lisa Edwards takes some spare time to practice the long iron shots. Photo by Shawn Seaney , ndependent practice makes better golfers The boys team, coached by loe B r o W n a n d P a t Gannaway, placed third in district, miss- ing regionals by three strokes. Being under the state rule of only hav- ing eight hours a week to practice, players were encour- aged to practice on their own. The school joined the Sleepy Hol- low country club and, if weather permitted, players could sign in and play individually. To play golf, students had to try-out because of limited space. The girls couldn't be forgotten. The team placed second in district. m'3i,3mgyed golf this Year-this mammal: lieasrllebeifylf ,PEG iiattolfsiilssitessatgllii syfferdrelftyefffsvigi i-ESi9it1'ft8nc65Qft?p si lanie Henderson. by Jennifer James i , Members of the girls golf team are: Lisa Ed- V Membefs of the boifsigdlf team 8-Fei fb0ff0m wards, Lori Tomonto, Keri Spurgin. WITH ONE thing on his mind, senior Chris Cavi- ness psyches himself up before a lift by listening to the movie soundtrack of Wsion Quest. Photo by Betty Cog- gms Boy Becomes Psyched Beast he creature walked with stiff legs to the plat- form. His eyes gazed into space as the assis- tant came to give him a final whiff of the magic solution. He ap- proaches the enemy and gives a linal growl of anticipation. He lifts the weight and the judges light up three green lights for his perfection. Sports are often thought of as mental testings as well as physical testings. Weight lifting is one sport that has many mind tricks. From lis- tening to music to smelling ammonia, many students and coaches believe these tricks help them. Senior Chris Cavi- ness listened to the 1081 Powerlifting soundtrack of Vision Quest before he squatted his maximum at the Cedar Hill Meet. I don't usually lis- ten to music but l had seen other guys do it and decided to try it. I lifted 600 pounds and won second place, so l guess it worked! Chris said. Training every day is very important but at the meet when the adrenaline is flowing, emotional tricks help, stated coach Nick lunior. by Betty Coggfns DETERMINATION SHOWING in his eyes, Senior Chris Caviness squats 6 0 0 pounds to finish second in the Dis- trict meet as Junior Kelvin Logan spots for him.
