Before you came to coach our football team, you watched them, sow their potential, and realized that with rhe right kind of guidance and discipline, they could be winners. Then, you rook them under your clipboard, and turned the boys you colled wharfrots,” in- to o true team, that through much hard work and ream spirit, sow many victories. In fact, you brought them to a total of eighty-seven victories, three league championships, and a sectional title in 1977 and 1979. Your work, however, did not go unnoticed, os you were deservedly named Finger Lakes West Coach of the Year three rimes, Section V Class C Coach of rhe Year twice, and in 1980, rhe Outstanding Football Coach by rhe New York Store Coaches Association. Thank you Mr. Furman, for giving so generously of yourself, for show- ing DeSoles it con overcome its disadvantages ond rise above them, for teaching all who come to know you o lesson in faith ond dedication, and most of all, for shoring with us that outstanding personality and incon- querable spirit that will live on in rhe spirit of DeSoles forever. FOR THIS WE DEDICATE THE 1987 SALESIAN TO YOU. DeSoles Remembers MR. DINGO Mr. Arthur Muzzi Before the yeorbook staff even typed the letter to the potential benefac- tor last year, Mr. Arthur Muzzi had his personal check and one from the bingo committee ready, as he did every year. We affectionately called him Mr. BINGO, bur we could well call him Mr. Support.” He was always one of the first to support any DeSoles project. We can thank Mr. Muzzi for DeSoles' having a marching band. When Mr. Tracey came here as principal in September 1975, The Drum Corps Pageant, a project of Art Muzzi's, sponsored by DeSoles, was already in the works. Mr. Tracey then remembered how he knew this man even before coming to Geneva. It seems Art Muzzi recruited musicians from Bishop Kearney High School when Mr. Tracey was the principal, to march in the Geneva Ap- pleknockers, a qualify marching band of which Mr. Muzzi wos the manager. Both men knew the benefit of such a program in our school and so the search for instrumental teachers began at DeSoles. Who could ever take his place running Dingo? Never mind. Mr. Muzzi rook care of that himself. Even while in the hospital, he'd call Mrs. D. for further in- struction and reminders. Mr. Priano, who now takes charge of BINGO, says He kept better records than the IPS. There was no problem stepping in.” We know from seeing his quiet and generous ways where his son 5reve gets his exompole. He wos an energetic person, always working for o worthwhile project, always supporting his family. We will oli miss Mr. Arthur Muzzi. Thank You The yearbook staff of 1987 would like to sincerely rhank Sr. Janet Connorton, whose dedication to the yearbook year after year is astounding. Sr. Joner is o wonderful person who has spent countless hours each year doing hard work, that at rimes has gone unnoticed by many. When we see the final product there's a realization that we know we couldn't hove done it without her. THANK YOU! Saints have great character V Administrators doing their Mr. Edward Tracey has many responsibilities. Besides being busy as principal of DeSales, he reaches History 205 and 206 and Religion 12. His noteworthy dedication is what keeps DeSales going. He puts in an extensive number of long hours, always being one of the first people in school in the morning and the lost to leave of night. Mr. Tracey's leadership, combined with his love and coring for the students is what mokes DeSales what if is — o family. Mr. John Fohy, Director of student services is o man devoted to DeSales High School. Summer ond foil ore two of the busiest times, trying to ac- comodate student schedules. He assists seniors with college applications and future plans, the juniors with PSAT's ond class rankings, also the freshmen ond sophomores with NEDT ond DAT test results. Students ore helped by the interpretation of these results. He is o man who helps solve problems big ond small that occur doily or DeSales High. 10 - X best to secure our future Mr. Costello — President Ft. Shomon Mrs. Polzinetti Mr. Buckley Msgr. It seems that the juniors plan on being of least rich if not famous. Carin Corovito goes for fame: I'm going to get my own star on the walk of fame. We'll see Karen Burslem on her own island. She con choose from one of her private jets when she takes her weekly shopping trip to Paris. Most ore more realistic like Liso Chelenzo — all she wonts is o BMW, o house on Long Island, a handsome husband and three children, annual trips to Disney World and monthly trips to Elizabeth Arden. We hope for his wife's sake, that Ron Buckley doesn't hove the twenty-six children of his dream. Best of luck on being the great business success, however. One con see why their guidance counselor, Mr. John Fohy, has to start early scheduling them for their PSAT's and helping them moke correct choices for college. No matter whot the future holds for them, we hope that DHS has in- stalled the Christian faith in each of them. When asked whot happiness means to them, they came up with a bunch of different answers. Two notable things about them is their love for eoch other and their love for food. Happiness to Karen Oyler is money and Morio. With the some idea, guys ore important to Kristi Pone. To Koren Buckley, happiness is a certain Varsity basketball player, (I wonder which one?). Joe Popple is happy when he's around girls and Frankie Caravira is happy when he has a girlfriend. On o totally different note, happiness to Koren Cerere is money and food. And simply food to Jeneone Donohue (Now those girls really know whor's important!) Some of the more original definitions of happiness ore being a democrat according to Morcie Cecere, korote to Ben Fernandez, and two kinds of ice cream to Mark Henninger. I think Nicole Aquolino speaks for all of us when she soys that Christmas mokes her happy. To Paul Annunzioro ond Pot Mooney, Sting in concert, is the ultimate form of happiness. And to Amy DeVoney, driving is happiness. (Not illegally, right Amy?!) To Andy Chilbert, happiness is not being sod, lonely or discouraged, ond laughing does if for Meghon Foul. Well, I think the freshmen hove covered o wide range of definitions to answer the question, Whot is happiness? Brandi Tedesche sums up the answer to the question in her quote, Happiness is. . . being happy! ...... Year in For the graduating class of 1987, the rime ranging from September of 1986 until the spring of 1987 is a very exciting time. It is filled with the making of future plans and the enjoyment of ending high school days. Aside from this, many important issues have risen and many events have taken place in our world, nation, community, and school. In the area of foreign affairs, President Reagan's public image may have been damaged, when, late this fall, if was discovered that arms had been discretely sent to Iran. However, Reagan denied responsibility for the situation. Bur, for the most parr, the American people have stood behind their country in spite of this situation. Also, President Reagan has met with Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev in Iceland, but the two did nor make any major agreements on the Star Wars or other issues. But, Gorbachev has been busy making reforms in his own nation in order to improve the Russian economy. Meanwhile, as of press rime, hostage Terry Anderson remains a captive in Lebanon, while Anglican Church envoy, Terry Waite, attempting to free him, is himself a captive. In the medical world, the disease called AIDS has crept its way into the American way of life. It has taken innocent lives, and as of now, there is no cure for it. Recently, two of America's outstanding entertainers died. In both cases, it has been suspected that the cause of death was AIDS. They are Rock Hudson and Liberace. Another epidemic that started in large inner cities, bur has made its way into all areas across the country is the drug called crack.” It has spread so freely and so quickly because of is abundance and availability. It is known to be dangerous and highly addictive. The outbreak of crack” and the persistent drug problem, as shown through the death of Len Bias, a University of Maryland basketball player, who died as the result of an overdose of cocaine, have led the President and First Lady, Nancy Reagan to start a notional anti-drug campaign. In the field of entertainment, it seems that history is repeating itself. For example, the old familiar faces of The Monkees” hove reappeared. Ben E. King's song, Stand By Me,” was brought back to life through a movie of the some name. Don’t be surprised if you hear the Beatles singing, Twist and Shout,” when you turn on your radio. 92 Review In rhe movie industry, actresses Molly Ringwald and Demi Moore ore on the rise to fame, and look for popular actors Michael J. Fox in his new movie, Light of Day, ond Judd Nelson in, From rhe Hip. Along with Rock Hudson and Liberace, Americo has also said goodbye to Cory Grant, who reportedly died of a stroke. In the world of sports, the Mets won rhe World Series taking four out of rhe seven gomes of rhe series against rhe Boston Red Sox. Roy Knight, of the Mets, was rhe most valuable player of rhe Series. This year's Super Bowl rook place between rhe New York Giants and rhe Denver Broncos. The Giants defeated rhe Broncos with a score of 39-20. The most valuable player was Phil Simms of the Giants. Also, this year, Dennis Conner was the skipper of rhe Stars and Stripes, rhe American ship that won bock rhe America's Cup in rhe yachting races in Australia. In view of local affairs, on September 24, 1986, Governor Morio Cuomo visited Geneva and granted 1.7 million dollars to Mayor Frank Cecere for rhe development of rhe lakefronr. However, Genevans hove yet to see any progress on this project. In rhe area of DeSales achievements, the 1986-87 school year was rhe first completed with the Middle States Accreditation which hos been on asset to our school. Also, the Boys Varsity Basketball Cooch, Mr. Alvoro, hos seemed to take charge of a compoign to improve rhe gym. To raise money for this purpose, bottle and can drives rook place in rhe community. We look forward to seeing rhe renovation of rhe gym in the future. This school year also marked a change in the head coach position of the Boys Varsity Football Team. Mr. McNicholos started his new job this seoson. He is raking the place of Mr. Harry Furman. (See page 4) This has been a rime of change, of reforms, and of valiant attempts to combat persistent problems in rhe world around us. May this give the class of 1987 hope and courage so that they moy follow their dreams.
