In 1975, when financial problems threatened the future of DeSales, you came together and showed your dedication to your alma mater. You helped DeSales get back on its feet and continue on in its uni- queness. Without your efforts there would be no DeSales for us today, and so we thank you all for that gift. We also offer our greatest condolences on the losses of your dear comrades, Gary Anania, Kevin Lynch, Dan Murphy, Mattie O’Hanlon and Felix St. John. We have all learned the importance of friendship through these unfortunate departures. Our prayers are with you all. You have earned a special place in our hearts through your courage in good times and bad, and so we dedicate our memories to you, the Class of 1975. iW Administrators Gear DeSales Mr. Edward Tracey, principal of DeSales High School, has a variety of jobs. Besides his positions as “head honcho” and chief bill- payer, he acts as a teacher of both A.P. History and Religion, snow- shoveler, gym sweeper, and deten- tion monitor. He’s even been known to be at school at 6:00 in the morning. Mr. Edward Tracey Mr. John Fahy is the head of the guidance department at DeSales High School. The first days of the school year see regular traffic to his office to straighten out schedul- ing problems. The last days of spring see a more casual flow to Mr. Fahy’s office to set up the next year’s program in hopes to keep the September problems to a minimum. Freshmen and sophomores encounter Mr. Fahy during the NEDT’s, Juniors during the PSAT’s and SAT’s. Senior year, students visit Mr. Fahy several times a week to discuss SAT’s, college applications, and future plans. We feel that the teachers at this learning institution are above average, well-qualified, and just plain nice people. We make these valid conclusions after having spent many hours in their presence. With them we have shared hopes and dreams, desperation and jubilation, triumphs and downfalls. They have been “teacher,” “mentor,” “pray-er,” sister,” “brother,” but above all, they have been “friend.” We see this as an outstanding quality and, as we move on towards the real world, we will remember just how magnificent these people have been to us. Freshman Class Officers: Nina Negro, Vice President; Moira Connolly, President; Lisa Chelenza, Treasurer; Stacey Marsteiner, Secretary The class of 1988 is truly a unique breed of newcomers to DeSales. Traditionally, Freshmen are in- timidated by the “older and wiser seniors,” and unquestioningly respect senior authority. This year, however, a larger and unruly Freshman class has wandered beyond the usual limits of underclassmen. They have been spotted in Senior homerooms, caught wandering through the senior hallway, and found lounging on the front steps, always an upperclassman privilege. Seniors have tried with some suc- cess to control this occasional “rude, crude, and socially unacceptable behavior.” However, the Freshmen have refused to give in to the pressures of being the newest addi- tion to the DeSales Family, and their spirit will guide them in their future high school years. Mr. Rickey is being attacked by Freshmen. Positive and negative Moira. 15 Freshmen Homeroom 29: Row 1: Nina Negro, Kristen Schuster, Karen Liberio, Michelle Sears, Karena Loudin, Mark McCarthy. Quincey shows Tag a new trick. 20 SOPHOMORE HOROSCOPE FOR THE FUTURE Sophomores study hard before school! I, Jeane Dixon, have made the follow- ing predictions for the class of 1987’s up- coming years at DeSales. In scholastic abilities, I see a future fill- ed with hope and promise. Your Junior year will entail hard work but with strength and determination you will suc- ceed with no trouble at all. Romance sparkles as the Sophomores show their charm combined with wit and intelligence. New loves will form with the coming of new faces. In the business field, we see the class of ’87 succeeding next year in the candy drive, relinquishing 2nd place to next year’s sophomores. Looking forward to the sophomore’s athletic achievements, we see some future Dan Marinos among our sophomore football players who have already completed two Varsity seasons. Great stars of stage and screen will come from the Class of ’87 because of the experience in the DeSales musicals. In short, a future of promise, hope, strength and love awaits our sophomores, the Class of 1987, as they move on to big- ger and better things. Next question please. 23 Juniors in the Hallway What :osurer; Mike Donahue. President; Maureen Heiecke. Secretary. For the Junior article, we have decided to emulate the ‘Man on the Street” found in the Finger Lakes Times every Saturday, with a few changes. We asked three basic questions: 1) What are your anticipations for Senior Year? 2) What would you like changed in your Senior year? 3) How would you sum up the past three years? Many of the responses were similar. An- ticipations amounted basically to the hopes of a fun-filled Senior year, a year that would top off all the years at DeSales. According to Sue O’Malley, the Senior year should be filled with spirit, and Matt Carty counts on having a good time and a nice rest after a tough Junior year.” Maureen Heieck foresees fund-raisers other than bake sales though it has been proven time and again that food brings out the money in everyone. There were some interesting responses to the question of changes: some feasible, some not. Many of the Juniors voted for a legal Senior Skip Day, or in any case, as Joe Giorgianni stated, more fun and definitely more days off!” And then there are those fike Michelle Trotta who could definitely go for the idea of being exempt from exams (and all tests for that matter!) On the more serious side, changes for the better include a Senior Class Trip, possibly longer homerooms and definitely more study halls, or at least one study hall!! As for the third question, our Juniors took on a serious tone and really thought about the answer. In summing up the past three years, the general feeling was that it was a very good experience and friends for life were formed during those years. Added one Junior, there was no unity until this year.” Joe Giorgianni summed it up in one word ... INTERESTING!” 25 It’s the Middle of the Road ... Homeroom 2: Row 1: Anne-Marie Curley, Mareen Heieck, Robert Chapman, Mat- thew Carty, Micheal Bucklin, Cathy Hall. Onorato After many long, hot and sweaty pre-season practices the DeSales Varsity football team opened up at home against Honoeye Falls-Lima. DeSales was looking for a little revenge as they had been beaten 20-0 in the opener the previous year. DeSales succeeded, 14-0 behind a solid defense and some big plays. The following week, DeSales suf- fred a tough loss at the hands of the eventual league champion, Red Jacket. The final was 16-12. DeSales breezed through the rest of the year with victories over Dundee 20-0, South Seneca 40-0, Bath 39-0, Bishop Walsh 7-0, and finished out with a 40-12 romp over Marcus Whitman. This gave DeSales a 6-1 record and a spot in the Section 5 Class C championship. They met Elba on the first game. The Lancers ousted the Saints in last year’s semi-final. Once again, DeSales made up for the loss with a resounding 19-8 victory. Next was a shot at Clyde- Savannah, ranked third in the state for small school. After a close first half, Clyde’s powerful offense tired out the Saints’ defense and struggled to a 22-11 victory. It was a great season. DeSales and the guys should hold their heads high. Amicalement, Francais 4 Amy has a visitor. 97 The Year Since September of 1984, it can definitely be said that time did not stand still. Many changes have oc- curred throughout the world, in our own country, and even locally. We have seen the beginning of things that may last all through the years, and have seen long-time traditions come to an end. As we are upon the end of a school year, we look back at the events that have affected all of our lives this past year. Around the world we have seen our share of disasters. Ethiopia has always had its share of problems with starvation and death, but it was not until this year that its desperation had the spotlight. All over this country people have been collecting money for Ethiopia. Churches have sent col- lection earnings to aid them; rodk music stars have put in more than their two cents by cutting a song and sen- ding the proceeds To the needy countries. The song, entitled “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was performed by more than thirty pop stars and became an instant smash hit. Another release, “We Are the World, was sung by many of America’s most famous recording stars having the same intentions of helping the poor of Africa as did the British group Band-Aid. Another tragedy that covered the papers took place in Bhopal, India. An American chemical plant, owned by Union Carbide, was discovered to have a leak of a chemical gas that killed thousands and permanently crippled other thousands of residents of the neighboring city of Bhopal. Looking on the positive side of life, however, Pope John Paul II made a world trip early in January encouraging peace. His travels included a stop in Canada, where many New Yorkers, in- cluding Genevans, went to see him. Jeremy Levin, an American journalist, held hostage for 11 months in Iran, found freedom once again when he escaped from his captors. Nationally, the year was a busy one. Fall of 1984 became history when a woman, Geraldine Ferraro, ran for vice-president with Walter Mondale cam- paigning for president. Ronald Reagan, along with George Bush, was elected to his second term as president in a landslide victory, taking fourty-nine out of fifty states, over Mondale. Reagan’s new propos- ed budget plan has caused some minor uproars among the peo- ple. In an ef- f o rt to reduce in Review among the people. In an effort to reduce spending. Reagan has proposed to cut the Federal and State loans for college students. This proposal would af- fect the country’s middle-class society, which makes up the majority of college students. The plan would be in effect starting in the 1986-87 school year. Needless to say, there was no talk of cutting defense spending. Another government change is the new postage stamp; smaller, green and bearing a “D” on it for Domestic, meaning that it now costs 22c to mail a letter in the United States instead of 20c. New Yorkers gathered by the thousands, and thousands more watched on television New Year’s Eve as the large red apple dropped for the last time to signify the end of 1984. Shortly after this time, the Chinese said goodbye to the Year of the Rat and welcomed in the Year of the Ox. Bernhard Goetz made headlines and also ac- quired the nickname “subway vigilante” after shooting four teens who apparently tried to rob him on a New York City subway. Goetz was convicted but then released. He was hero to some, and a sym- bol of racism to others. The controversy brought him to a new trial in spring. The comic strip Doonesbury returned just in time to make an issue of the Goetz incident. A new topic for discussion nationwide has been the Yippie vs. the Yuppie controversy. Yippies, who follow the political philosophies of the Youth International Party, and the Yuppies, the Young Urban Professionals, seem to disagree on just about everything. This controversy was brought close to home when Yippie Abbey Hoffman and Yuppie Jerry Rubin went at it during a debate at Hobart College. Both speakers had been political activists during the 60’s and had participated in the demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience to change the faults of the establishment. Today, Ab- bey Hoffman is still a bit of a radical while his old friend, Jerry Rubin, has become a tie-clad conser- vative of sorts. His new theory is that to change government, you have to become government, and make the change from the inside. Medically speaking, the world has seen a couple of firsts. In Loma Linda, California, a tiny baby, known only as Baby Fae, survived thirty-two days with the heart of a babboon. Though this medical discovery had enraged animal lovers and full blown purists, it could be the start of a whole new system of keeping people alive no matter what the cost. Along these lines is the ingenious idea of the artificial heart. Barney Clark was the first to receive the plastic organ; at this point there have been three recipients and with each implant chances of survival seem to get better and better for the patients. Closer to home, N.Y.S. became the first state to pass the seat belt law, with a $50 fine to those who choose to ignore it. There have been protests but, for the most part, the law has proven itself: the percentage of deaths and or serious accidents has declined drastically. Geneva will soon host yet another of the over- powering Wegman’s markets, a store in which you end up buying everything you planned on buying, plus much more! In sports and entertainment, Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49er’s to victory over the Miami Dolphins in this year’s Superbowl. Doug Flutie, Heisman trophy winner, now plays in the USFL. Movie goers have seen several new blockbusters including Ghostbusters, Purple Rain, and Beverly Hills Cop while the Cosby Show has millions of T.V. viewers. Television, of urse, had its low points in shows such as le Peoples Court and Divorce Court. In the world of music, Lionel Richie walk- ed away with several Grammys at this years awards ceremony. At the same time, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna show- ed everyone how well female performers can do. Michael Jackson’s tour was a definite victory for him and his brothers, while Bruce Springsteen packed them in with his Born In The U.S.A. tour. Prince’s steamy entourage didn’t do too badly either. The world said good-bye to some of the people who have influenced our lives: Marvin Gaye, Richard Burton, William (“Count”) Basie, George Gallop (“Gallup Poll”), Ethel Merman, Indira Ghandi, Konstantin Cherenko and Eugene Ormandy. 99 flem Open 7 Days a Week Pizza’s Subs Salads Wings Delivery From 5:00 pm Till Close Good Luck Big “D” PRONUS RESTAURANT Tops Friendly Markets 89 Avenue E. Remembering the fun and laughter, The problems and the fears, And watching all our memories grow Throughout our high school years. The memories of the dances And the new friends that we’ve met, Vacations, teachers, talking And exams we’d rather forget. Yes, high school days are precious but brief, Where all your dreams come true; It is not the end, but the beginning Of a life we’ll start anew. Joy Walker TEEN Magazine with permission
