Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1984 volume:

A Splendid Torch Life is no brief candle to me It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment And I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations. George Bernard Shaw i We, as students of DeSales High School, know the quality and workmanship that goes into creating a “Saint.” That same dedication and hard work went into the construction of this yearbook. We feel it reflects our lives at DeSales, whether in prayer, work or play. The staff of this yearbook deliberated many days for a theme that would portray the school. When the Olympics was suggested, it seemed just what we wanted. One reason for having it as our theme is the fact that the Olympics are held in this year, of 1984, but that is not the main reason. We feel that the Olympic dream and being a DeSales Saint are alike in that we all want to be on top. That goal comes when we graduate, knowing we have the best education there is. This is accomplished with the assistance of Mr. Tracey, the faculty and our families but the biggest push comes from the Lord, Himself. For without His help, we might not have chosen the path to DeSales. There is a difference between the Olympics and a “Saint”, in that the Olympics have those who do not win because they are not good enough. This is not true at DeSales. We know that all who are here, students and faculty alike, are gold medal win- ners because we try and never give up. So throughout these pages, you will see those who try and try again but not once does the thought of giving in occur because, “We Proudly Call Ourselves DeSales Saints.” “As for Me ... I have run the great race, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. And now the prize awaits me, the garland of righteousness which the Lord, the all-just Judge, will award me on that great day; and it is not for me alone, but for all who have set their hearts on His coming appearance.” 2 Tim 4:7-8 irtisers Fapuity and' ' ! % I SALESIAN 1984 Volume 50 __ Co-Editors: ria Gentile Michelle Valentino (Associate Editors: Kelly Cecere A Parent, a Teacher, Mrs. Carol Marsteiner To us, Mrs. Marsteiner, you gave your undivided attention, with one-on-one situations in class. Through your experience and through your thoughtfulness we have excelled. You have invested in our future, expecting the dividend to come back threefold; and it will. To us, you have given your trust and your friendship. When we needed help you were there, whether it was on your lunch hour or after school. Since you believed in us, we had faith in ourselves. For us, you organized beautiful proms, our National Honor Society, and gave your support in our fund-raisers. You donated lunch time for extra labs. You are a parent, a teacher, and a friend all rolled into one. So to you, Mrs. Marsteiner, we gratefully inscribe this edition of the Salesian. We realize that these words and this paper cannot repay you for all you give, so with these pages comes the love we have built up for you during the past four years. 4 a Friend Mrs. M. enjoys marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. We've come a long way and have been many places; but Mom and Dad have always been there. You've watched us make all the mistakes kids make. You've watched us take all the chances kids take; but through all our tears and through all our laughter, we keep growing and you keep loving. Now we would like to take the time to thank you, our parents, and everyone who has supported and helped us through these special and memorable times. The 1983 Softball season was very exciting despite the discouraging record. The Saints were Seventh in the league with a 5-11 win record. The weather was a big factor for the team since it kept them from playing the regular season. Some games were comical with the slipping and sliding. and especially, the scores. Even though the Saints came short of a fantastic record, they still made it to the sectionals. They met up with Belmont. It teas the seventh seeded Golden Bears against the tenth seeded Saints. DeSales led 10-8 until the bottom of the sixth inning when they gave up three runs to fall behind. It was a close game all the way, with a final score of 11-JO. Belmont bearing the victory. This ended a season of ups and downs. There were many talented athletes who gave their all throughout the season. The spirit of these graduates will be carried on in the hearts of next season's team, in the hope of someday achieving the highest. 82 J.V. Softball Row 1: Mary Beth Priano, Ann-Marie Curley. The winning streak lasted for only one more game. The DeSales Saints took on the Honeoye Bulldogs. This game was hosted by the home team on the Northern shores of our own Seneca Lake in Geneva. A snowball effect began of losses and did not end until they faced Waterloo. The upcoming event to be hosted was the Grand Sectionals. The question now was to be answered, “Does the DeSales team have enough Sectional points to qualify?” Yes, indeed! To the surprise of the Saints and Coach Spellecy, DeSales had prevailed! A long journey took the team to Cohocten where DeSales was defeated by Greenwood, saddened by the loss and the ending of another season, the girls set aside spikes and sliinguards for a minute while Coach Spellecy gave his final talk. Senior hearts and eyes were filled tvilh sadness at the close of their final soccer season. 2 4 2 1 1 1 0 1 0 0 3 0 0 0 1 She's a maniac, maniac on the field . . . ! Take it all the way, Lisa!! The Wharfrats knew what lay ahead of them, a long hard season of football. They were prepared, but what would the season be like? The Saints started their suicide schedule looking nervous. After losing non-league games against Honeyoe and Portville, the Wharfrats learned from their mistakes and put it together to beat Class A Attica. Coming off a win, the Saints started their Finger Lakes West league by taking a bus, rather than an airplane. The Saints whipped the Romulus Warriors and manhandled the Dundee Scots! Revenge was plotted, planned, and executed as the Saints demolished South Seneca. The Wharfrats were drooling for the West Title and won it after beating Whitman! The Saints finished the season by making it to the Sectionals after crushing every team in the league to win the Finger Lakes West title. Outstanding offense by Lisa Cote, Heather Koch, and Stephanie DeVaney, along with the defense led by seniors, Arlene Sollenne, Maureen Quigley, Alesha Priebe and tough Kirsten Sindoni. It has brought them to second place in the league with a 15-3 record. Chris Cosentino’s magic swish shots from twenty feet out and Marci MacLaren’s violent defense have proven to be extremely beneficial in important games. Captains, Charmaine DeVaney and Arlene Sollenne, and Heather Koch have shown great leadership in athletic ability and sportsmanship. Head coach Mr. Muzzi and assistant coach Frank Pane, along with Bronson Frank, have brought the girls to the sectionals again. low 1: Chris Cosentino, Alesha Priebe, Marci tacLaren, Arlene Sollenne. The first practice started on a November afternoon in the cold DeSales Gym. The Coach Manion and Assistant Coach Bill Riley started the season by getting the small but quick Saints into shape. We knew we were in for a hard luck season when a Boomfield scrub banked a 20 foot hook-shot at the buzzer. That game was the “story of the season” because the Saints lost half of their games by 5 points or fewer. The Saints saw their season end just as it began with a 40 foot prayer shot by Bolivar at the buzzer in Sectional play. Our loyal bus driver Mr. Updike and assistant coach Bill Riley. 99 J.
