A LONGTIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY . Our lives; each a great epic tale, a great movie. Our lives; all the features that make them rate as ‘A’ movies — our hopes, our dreams, our actions, our adventures — plac- ed on film forever. The film — our memories. For a few brief minutes, a few thousand frames, each of these great tales meet. This intersection creates a heretofore unknown experience. The final cut. The Finished Product. That unique tale . .. In her will, she left $48,000 to DeSales. The money, greatly needed, was put to good use. Since part of the money was earmarked for the Physical Educa- tion program we were able to repair the gymnasium floor, and buy new athletic uniforms. According to the Finger Lakes Times, Miss McCherry was an independent and resourceful person. For example as an octagenarian she managed to paint her own barn by herself, refinish her own furniture, blacktop her driveway and make most of her clothes. Miss McCherry was an English literature and grammar teacher here in Geneva. She retired in 1966 after teaching 46 years. The Times said she remained very active until her death in September 1979. In gratitude we offer this small tribute to Miss Margaret McCherry we will always consider her part of our DeSales family. 4 ALL THE KINGS MEN All The Kings Men is a tale of conspiracy and intrigue in which a closely knit group of professionals appear to plot day after day the downfall of their followers through D’s and detentions. All the Kings Men is packed with suspense and emotion, filled with situations in which the professionals secretly try to educate their followers in the hopes of some eventual comprehension. “A good story with a surprise ending.” 5 Gene Shalit NBC ADMINISTRATION Mr. Edward Tracey Chief Administrator A school is only as good as the people behind it. Mr. Tracey, in his five years as principal at De Sales, has proven this. He has shown through his tireless efforts for the school, its faculty, and its students, that De Sales is truly the best place to be for a high school education. Sister Mary Maywalt Mr. Fahy, in his first year at DeSales, has proven to be a tremendous help to those Juniors and Seniors who require guidance in selecting their next avenues oflife. He introduces students to a variety of colleges and careers which he feels will best suit the students’ needs as well as explaining the paperwork required to get them there. His past experiences in administration, and the good rapport he carries with the students, gives an added dimension to his work. Usually in a high school the vice-principal is not expected to take very many tasks which demand great responsibility. Sister Mary is the exception. For the past three years she has organized the Candy Drive and Christmas Kit drive as well as the usual jobs of attendance, discipline and student scheduling. Her role this year, as part of the team, is that of Assistant Administrator. In her responsibility for recruitment she master- minded “Spirit Day” which over two-hundred eighth graders from surrounding school districts attended. President; Marilyn Hurley. Secre- tary; Bill Hart. Treasurer; Kathy lan- nopollo. Vice President. THE SENIORS (Running time; 2 hrs. Starring; 1981 DHS Graduating class Rated; R) THE SENIORS is a fast paced, well-acted combination of Rebel Without a Cause and Animal House, with a great musical score by that Hot new group, Grand Prix. SENIORS covers four years in the lives of 34 lovable maldaroits who get into all sorts of zany capers. Keep an eye out for the classic Junior Achievement scene, the perfectly staged jeep crash, and the wild orgies at the lake. SENIORS is over all a very well made movie. I'd say it is the beginning of a new trend in movie making in a class by itself. (four star) by Rex Reed 17 C JU$tir«XL fcMo LC BerrUsttnXw aJtCUW Starring Lori Anastasi Cuddles . . . Dancin' .. . SOMETHING SHORT OF PARADISE (Rated; PG Running Time; 90 mins.) Something Short of Paradise is a good movie that tries hard to be a great movie, but doesn’t quite make it. Paradise gets off to a slow start, but soon gains momentum (from flashy props liKe a Delta 88) and speeds to a climax that leaves us hanging in the theater anxious for a real ending. I almost missed the ending, thanks to two persistent girls selling candy bars. I was forced to buy four before they left me alone to enjoy (sort of) the show. The actors in Paradise deserve an E for effort, although they are inexperienced and mimic the motions of better actors, such as the stars of Seniors. Paradise is a good movie for killing time, and it won’t hurt you to go see it. Gene Shalit 32 33 Michael Smaldone, Pat Faul, Patty Chizinski. MIDWAY shows its main characters meeting an array of beastly horrors and cruel work and laughing them off in sometimes funny situations and gags. Still MIDWAY is at best half-baked and could have been developed a lot more than it was when it got printed. MIDWAY rates only two stars. 37 Row 1: Mary Williams, John Venuti, Lorrie Pollino. THE JERKS is an often silly, sometimes serious movie about a group of people try- ing to adjust to a totally new way of life. A very simple film with a simple plot and mostly simple people. There are, however a few good moments that give hope to the future of The Jerks Part II. Even so, it gets only one star. 43 Row 1: Mike Acquilano, John Church. Soccer The season started out slow, the poten- tial was great. We had fun. Then it started to pick up, but we still had fun. We seperated midway thru the season into two teams. The J.V.’s had experience, but only played a few games. Even though we didn’t rank high in the charts, we had a 4 star team. We broke our team record for most goals scored in a game. Lori tied Jody Lavin’s record for 4 goals in a game, due to obvious reasons. Altogether there was a lot of improvement on all the players parts. The day consisted of a prayer service, lunch, and a contest. Scott MacKay from Newark, and Sue Maher from Geneva, tied for first place. And this week you have to read only four novels. All people who speak Spanish raise your hands. )2 This time let's all sing the same song. Future scientists finish their nuclear bomb in lab. Even the teachers acted nice on spirit day. Guests seem puzzled by the art demonstration. Contestants nervously listen to Father Metzger’s introduction. 93 Grand Prix in Concert GRAND PRIX is a group of young, ambitious new musicians who have topped the charts just months after their first release. This live-on-stage performance captures the vibrant energy of the group. The film begins with a shot of the crowd outside the auditorium, who have been there for hours waiting for the doors to open, past two busy ticket takers, past the standing room only audience, and on stage with the band for the rest of the performance. This is a great movie for any music lover, and is well worth the few sour notes. I’m Kasey Kasum and I’ll be back next week with another great movie for you. Steve Lorenza plays lead guitar Paul Q. joins Chris Chris Colizzi, Mark O’Donell, and Bill Kane belt it. J.P. at the drums ALL HALLOWS EVE Halloween was the day that our own beloved students became possessed by the spirits of creatures strange and frightening. Midgets walked hand in hand with ghosts from varied lands down our dark and shadowed halls. Luckily though they were dispelled by the ringing of the bell at 2:24. Foreign Exchange Student Luis Galvez, 16 of San Salvador, is this year’s De Sales Exchange stu- dent. He is living with Mark Tette and his family in Stanley. Luis has three sisters and one brother in El Salvador. His sisters, who are all at one time exchange students were the ones who encouraged him to become an exchange student. Although the Exchange Organization decided where Luis was to go, he wanted to go to a Northern school and so he was assigned to DeSales. Luis went to a private German Grade school, before going to High School. Despite the recent transitions in El Salvador, Luis and his family are not in direct danger since they lived more on the outskirts of the city. This year has had many new ex- periences for Luis. He has not only met new people, it was the first time he had seen snow. Luis has par- ticipated in almost every winter sport — skiing, hockey, skating. We are glad to have known Luis this year and are happy to see that he has had a good experience here at De Sales. 102 More New Faces International Foreign Language week changed the names of things. 103 Art Show at the Prouty-Chew De Sales shows its talents off.
