Geneva. Dedication Sister Helen Kannan d. 12 14 79 May she rest in peace Sister Helen never really retired from DeSales. Her official retirement” as Guidance Counselor was after the 77-78 school year, her seventh at DeSales. Sister’s interest in every- thing going on at school and after was unbounded. She wanted to know who was doing well in school, what teams were playing, what was the score and why don’t you know?” if the answer was not forthcoming. Her work didn’t stop either. Graduates still contacted her for references and advice. She was Mrs. Bolan’s private secretary” for the board and proud of it. Sister’s last official school act was to present the awards to the eighth graders who won the spelling bee that was dedicated to her (See page 99). All of us who knew Sister Helen Kannan are grateful to her dedication to DeSales, her faithfulness to the Sisters of St. Joseph, and her love and faithfulness to the people whose lives she touched. 2 You, me, our friends, teachers ... We all are separate people. Yet, at the same time, we are part of a whole. Like the pieces of a puzzle, we fit together into a unique design, each piece having a different shape and size. In time, each piece is fit- ted perfectly into the picture. Our school has made us, separate pieces, fit together to make the school. Now some pieces will be taken from the mold, while others will be shaped to take their place. Watch ... listen ... together. Our administration consists of a core of people, who by their efforts, succeed in keeping DcSalcs alive and growing. Sr. Mary Maywalt is not only bogged down with the duties of being Vice-Principal, but also takes on the major tasks of fund-raising. She organized the Mothers Club, who help with the Christmas Kit sale and who give time in school as office volunteers. Sister also manages the Candy Sale. Mr. Edward Tracey, our principal, is regularly seen cleaning the build- ing, shoveling the walks, or just about any other job that needs to be done. He teaches Theology to the Junior Class, also. The Christmas Tree Sale and the Magazine Sale arc his special projects. He is a recruiter, a big thinker, and a friend to all. Because of people like Mr. Tracy and Sr. Mary, De Sales is a community. It helps us to under- stand that even though we arc oceans apart, the gift of language clo- ses the gap. Jaime Cano, a senior from Colombia, and Angela Galangc have enjoyed themselves in America. Jamie, who stays with Mike Hendricks and his family, has partici- pated in many events while at DeSales. Not only has he engaged in some of the tougher senior courses, but he has also found time to play football and volleyball. Angela is hosted by Kathy Priano and her family. She was very active in the D.H.S. community, by participating in Spanish Club, Ski Club, Science Club and P.H.P. Angela describes Americans as friendly and warm, and finds education of the same caliber as at home.
