The Saints pulled their record up from 0-13 in '76, to 5-7-2 in '77. This improvement is measured on Take it on a knee, gang. the experience that the team gained in the '76 season. With an enthusiastic turn-out and Mr. Mack Spellecy's coaching, the team’s success shocked everyone but the team. They knew that hard work would be rewarded with victories. Next years’ season will be even more enjoyable for the girls. It’s all in the family. Swing into action. 58 Bottom, Row 1: Kathy lannopollo, Rose Ann Consolie, Lisa Toole, Marilyn Hurley, Tina Lorsong, Stephanie Spano. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL Still another boys sport takes place during the winter season — volleyball. Guiding the second year Saints are Mr. Christopher Leven and Mr. Dennis Doell. The players are very enthusiastic, in spite of their sub-.500 record. “What we needed was team unity comments Dennis Doell, “I saw a change toward the end of the season and hope to keep that alive for next year.” The Finger Lakes Volleyball league is still very young with DeSales being a member of the league for only three years. GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL We didn’t win many games, comments Coach Doreen DeSain, but we did have a good time. DeSales Volleyball, the sport of late fall '11, wound up the season with one win and thirteen losses. The girls enjoyed themselves in spite of the tough competition of the Finger Lakes West division. This was the third season the Saints have competed in league play. Hopefully, we will have a team next year, if there are enough girls interested, notes DeSain. 61 The '76-77 Saints are a tough act to follow as this year’s team found out. Last year’s Saints finished second in the Finger Lakes C-Division and second in the sectional finals. John Quethera, Tim Tapscott and Mike Bradley have hustled and scored consistently all season. But when the points were needed, the team was unable to convert. In a disappointing loss to South Seneca, the Saints failed to score a point for ten minutes. “I didn’t know if we were ever going to score another point, comments Coach John Fitzgerald. “It seemed like an hour and a half.” Despite the tough competition in the league, the Saints have won a few hard played games. Assistant Coach Steve Muzzi said, We have a young team — a lotto look forward to. The J.V. team showed improvement toward the end of the season.” . . .and in comes the “Three Stooges.” “It's a bird, it’s a plane, it's Johnny Q. 62 Boys’ Varsity Basketball: Row 1: Greg Graham, Mike Munzer, Mgr.. With Ms. Doreen DeSain’s coaching, the Saints have frustrated opponents. We have a great team,” comments Coach DeSain, “that plays as a team.” The Saints improved rebounding and shooting, as well as their overall quickness are main reasons for the team’s success. While averaging 60 points a game, the Saints defense held the opponent to an average of 40 points. Following the important win against the Honeoye Bulldogettes, DeSain said, “It was a very tense game, but we were very consistent. We fell apart during last year’s game and lost by one point.” The team's future is bright. “Even though we are losing Jody Lavin and Andi Venuti,” says DeSain, “we should have a good team next year.” Row 1: Ellen Monahan, Andi Venuti. Doug Smaldone, Tom Bucklin and Doug Graham led the team in batting and fielding. This is another rebuilding year for the Saints. More than half of last year’s team graduated leaving a talented but inexperienced group. Bob Bucklin, Bob Taney, and Steve DeRaddo are the only starting returnees. Row 1: Steve DeRaddo, David Eddy. Steve enjoys warming-up for a homer. 74 The girls’ sports program at DeSales is flying high with the addition of a softball team in the '77 spring season featured on the next page. With a record of 3-7, Coach Max Spellecy feels that the team is the most improved in the league. A first year team always encounters a few problems, relates Coach Spellecy, “We had to fit eighteen people in two cars, nine rode in a four passenger Maverick while five passenger Nova carried the other nine. My car hasn’t been the same since then. There are four basic requirements for the '78 softball team,” says Coach Spellecy. “The girls must have big gloves and hats, acquire sliding and bunting skills, get more bats, and somehow get a new backstop for the week “Flip and fire” for '78 girls.” J.V. This attitude was expressed by Sister Sheila, who with Sister Mary, organized our spring Mission Day. Proceeds from '11 Mission Day help out six missions: That of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil and in Selma, Father Taney in the Philippines, Father Hastings in Japan, Father Hager (Mrs. Gobe's cousin) in Ethiopia, and Father Major (Sr. Anne’s cousin) in Borneo. 80 Tk New MuSfo DepctAhnetvb fs cu ' 'Plus ’ ’ (po UoQoJks. This year, the paper has operated on a relatively low budget. The Blaze-Off has been fortunate, however, to have the Air Force sponsor the paper. They handled the printing of the paper, and the bulk of expense was saved there also. The paper aims for 5 issues per year, which is an improvement over the past couple of years. The paper has lacked experience in upperclassmen, but many underclassmen have gained knowledge for any future work with the newspaper. The moderator of the Blaze-Off is Mr. Quartaro. Each year students and faculty gather together to decide what helpful activities can be done. Some of their activities include: ARC Christmas Party, tutoring stu- dents, and visiting lonely people in the hospital and nursing home. ALBERTO Alberto Nassur, a foreign exchange student from Brazil, arrived at DeSales this year. Alberto is 17 years old and is presently the newest member of the junior class. He says he likes DeSales, and was very much excited by the snow here in Geneva. He made many new friends and likes the atmosphere of DeSales. Alberto is also very athletic. He swims, plays soccer, and likes tennis and track. He speaks four languages and is learning English very fast! Mr. James Hurley was a great man. He had such vitality and spirit that it reflected in everything he did. He was a loving husband and father, and a highly respected man in the community. He was an important pillar at DeSales, especially in his efforts for the Booster Club. All who knew him, loved him. His magnetism was felt by everyone through his cheerfulness, care, and concern. At press time, DeSales lost another booster of its sports program, Mr. Elmer Sroka, father of John and Frank. Mr. Sroka gave hours of volunteer time to the football team, wrapping, and strapping our aching players. He is sadly missed by all. 88 QtOCWY 89 Eileen and Ellen stream the gym for the Ball. “Flight played to a standing room only crowd. Concerts and Dances Take a Lot of Work but Were Well Worth It. Sue adds some finishing touches. Steve and Chris were in the court. 90 Some School Days Are Brightened by Visitors. Father Shammon gave an enlightening talk — “Pray the Rosary.” The folk group adds a religious note. Rosemaria visits for a day. The Money-Makers are the group of people who devote their precious time endlessly to keep DeSales the vital part of this community that it is. Each year numerous projects are formed to increase not only the revenue, but also the community involvement in these projects. Activities include: Bingo, Fall Festival, Candy Sale, Christmas Tree Sale, Chicken Barbecue, and many others. It is to these “Money-Makers we say, “Thank-you. It is your spirit that keeps the spirit of DeSales alive.” Bob and Barney said, “It’s Shake and Bake and we helped!” The faculty readies the candy for “The Big Sale.” Huddling together kept the boys warm at the Christmas Tree Sale. flKfll Gags and John display one of DeSales finest firs. 93 In early October, the DeSales Board gave a special tribute to Sister Helen to celebrate her fiftieth Jubilee as a Sister of St. Joseph. Sister Helen spent much of this time in Geneva as principal of St. Francis de Sales Grammar School, and Guidance Counselor at DeSales. Honoring Sister Helen because of her work in guidance and college placement were DeSales Faculty, Mayor Helen Maney, and guidance counselors from Geneva High and area Colleges. Sister Helen and Mr. Smith of Geneva High guided many of the Sisters from St. Stephen’s join Sister Helen to celebrate, same students. 94 azUOAL UO UENlC Let us do nothing abjectly, nothing timidly, nothing sluggishly. Cicero 96 All great institutions have great leaders. At DeSales, we are fortunate to have three of the best. Where would DeSales be without people devoting themselves to help make it the excellent high school that it can boast to be? Mr. Tracey and Sr. Pat have both spent many hours of their busy days in an effort to keep DeSales alive. It seems to be almost every week that they have new ideas for the school. Sr. Margot has also spent much of her time in devotion to the college bound and non college bound students. She is one who truly cares about each student as an individual. Sr. Margot is always there to make sure each student makes the right choice in everything that is done. Everyone, faculty and student, depends on ‘Mrs. D for her untiring service. DeSales Board Members are dedicated people who give time to consider all the aspects of the school’s functions. Top left: Marina Emmi, President William Koelbel, secretary Mary Kay Bolan.
