As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourselves with others, you may become vain and bitter for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievement as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however hum- ble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals; and every- where life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass . . . Detfkcotitott Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. Mike Hanley had a refreshing, uncomplicated and easy going an- swer for life. He did everything with zest and determination. We all knew him. We all loved him. Mike you'll never be separated from our thoughts. We miss you, friend. 6 Life Needs Us All There is so much that we can do — A kind word spoken here and there Will ease another's weight of care; Life needs us all. The splendid few Who rise to fame, with all their skill Your post and mine can never fill. If we who have not wealth or fame Should fail in all our little deeds, The world would sink beneath its needs. Not by the greatness of a name, Nor by the splendor of success, Are hearts restored to happiness. About us all are those who need The gifts which we have power to give; We can be friendly while we live And by some thoughtful, kindly deed, Can help another on his way — And that is service, come what may. What though we miss the heights of skill, The splendor of the greater few, There is so much that we can do; There is a place which we can fill — Always about us while we live Are those who need what we can give. This poem was taken from a favorite book of Mike’s titled The Passing Throng by Edgar Guest. 8 [tt The Senior Class of DeSales is grateful for the many years of service that Monsignor Ball and Father Nolan have given to our school. Their hard work and interest has kept Catholic educa- tion alive in Geneva. We truly hope their efforts have not been in vain. f  ;v, Pieces •r- — . ££ In the middle of the night, In the middle of the road, In the middle of the snowstorm. In the middle of my youth, I stood. The snow encased my body With its downy robe, While it flickered past my nose, And suddenly I sensed it. The snow-heavy trees, The blanket-white earth, And the snow-specked sky Met my scrutinous eyes. In a storm-sparked drift I saw us. My body heaved; my heart pounded Against my ribs like an animal Caged and longing to be free, I laughed and I wept I laughed and I wept. I ran; yet I stood still. I gave and I received. I forged ahead; yet held back. I held her hand and met her gaze. My palms sweated and my nose froze. My insides jumped and my body calmed her. I loved: no — we loved. I faced her and my greedy eyes drank of her beauty. Her downy hair glittered with the snow, And her pool-blue eyes sought mine. I embraced her and she clung to me. There we stood. In the middle of the night, In the middle of the snowstorm, In a warm embrace. My nerves tightened and my eyes watered. My arms were empty. I cursed my mind, While my blank heart wept. The blue sky sparkled While the blonde snow felll I embraced it and It clung to me. Cracked hearts; angered, bitter, tongues; bright, shining, joyous eyes; glow from within. Feeling. Lilacs freshly blooming; smoked ham waving through white kitchens; spices mixed with cool air, in pantries: fresh, white, cleansed sheets blowing in sunshine filled backyards. Smell. Kathy Fuchs People so seldom say I love you and then it's either too late or love goes. But when I tell you I love you, it doesn't mean I know you'll never go, only that I wish you didn't have to. Anonymous The frozen earth is witness to the broken promise. Spring never came, but flew — Like all old songs, it died never to be again Broken — left to be burned. V. I. 10 Steve Tandle The One Reality: Time or My Favorite Toy I had this toy one time I used to play with it everyday. Sometimes I thought I had lost it for good, But sooner or later it would turn up again. My parents used to warn me about it. I never understood what they meant. They said I was going to hurt myself, with it one day, I couldn't see how an innocent little toy could hurt. My aunt said I was wasting it, But I thought little about it. It was just there for my pleasure. One day I lost my toy. My parents were right. It did hurt. Kathy Fuchs This fragile disfigure stands alone. Inside develops a breath of life. Streams of joy flow through her While pangs of pain throb intensely. It's almost here, but when . . . how . . . and who... He leaves me to care on my own, But why. For he finds someone else's love. That which is better than mine. It's only seconds now before the day brings happiness . . . The moment has come . . . It’s a girl! Lorraine Salone One by one the leaves fall dead upon the ground One by one the days slip by One by one they end One by one my dreams Cause tears One by one they fall Life is simply one by one One until the end Vicki lannpollo WARNING: AMERICA I am an American boy And you make me play with that M-16 toy. The Four Winds blow the threat of war, Anarchy, Filth, Disease and more. People we must end the hate. Before we reach the Final Date. And if we are too late We will deserve that fiery fate. J. W. Nittler 11 LIFE CIRCLES My life became a single circle With several people in and out' Alone, yet crowded, filled to capacity. The night was grey with restless thoughts Winding in among the bodies. Are you happy? Yes came answers. Are you really happy? Yes? whispered my brain. Happiness, yes. had more than my share. But real truth? So hard to find. Around me people lived their lives Each hour I continued to breathe and run through days one after the other — Slowly the circle began to tighten one after the other — Slowly the circle began to tighten as things to me stopped being a game. Once again I heard the whisper — Happy? Yes. but there’s something more. So I left the circle Shattered it really, and stood And laughed as the pieces flew in all directions. The sun was warm and colors were throbbing with life about me. Long ago it was, I can hardly remember Yet even today I find the pieces of circle. Now understanding Sitting and contemplating, we reminisce about the way it was — a while — Stand and look at each other freely Turn and go our ways again. Happy? whispers my mind once more. Yes. I answer, Peace and I have met — after searching all this time. Good, comes the whisper, fading now, It’s all I could have hoped for you. Nancy Maney Encased in the sand With a blanket of sunshine, Is a head and a pair of feet tanning. The neck is surrendering to a clinging dog tag, And claiming the head is a camouflage hat Protecting its captive from burning. But the wind envelopes the guard in its grasp And the face of the veteran emerges. The I ines on his countenance reveal a struggle To divide himself like the surf from the sea And find out what each might mean Like a rock that’s bombarded by both, but stands free. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here, And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusions of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy! 103 by Les Crane It's all over. Gone are those days — those sad, mad; happy and high days. Gone, but not forgotten. Here in this book live all those precious mo- ments. We ve put all our efforts to work so that you may have a part of this year. These pages represent your friends that you have grown to love. Part- ing is always sweet sorrow and each new year leaves old memories trailing behind. We can only reminisce and hope that we made this year the best we possibly could. 1971-1972 will never be again — it has become a part of the ever changing times. To the Seniors the future is open to you and with your cooperation this world can be a beautiful place. To the underclassmen — be careful. So fast do the days slip by. Take your time and strive to be happy! 104 Aquilano, Daniel J. C.S.M.C. I, 2, 3, 4; A.A. I, 2,3,4; Intramurals 1, 2. Adair, Robert C.S.M.C. 4; A.A. 4. Alvaro, Francis C.S.M.C. 4; A.A. 4.
