AUTHOR UNKNOWN Sports is the heartbeat of DeSales. From our athletic program, the stu- dents derive a sense of unity and pride. That pride had floundered in recent years, until Mr. Furman volunteered his services as head football coach. In only his second season, he gave DeSales its first football championship. All of us admire his keen sense of humor, his professionalism, his enthusiasm, and his intense dedication. We, the Class of '71. dedicate our yearbook to Harry Furman, a one-in-a-million Guv. 5 - r J 1 1 1 1 , , y i rSE | „ 1 If — V f' Carry On Rejoice! Rejoice! We have no choice but to Carry on. DeSales captures By NORM JOLLOW VICTOR — “It was a long afternoon and it seemed to keep getting longer,” said DeSales Coach Harry Furman after his Saints had carried him victoriously across the soggy Victor football field. Saturday afternoon. The “length” of the afternoon, however, only served to sweeten the victory as the Saints capitalized on every opportunity and posted a 24-0 victory over the Blue Devils. Later. Saturday, when the final returns were in from Lyons, where the lions came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit for a 20-3 victory, over Whit- man the DeSales Saints had their first football championship ever. The Saints clinched the title with a 4-0 record Whitman still had a chance to STATISTICS Victor DeSales First downs 4 10 Yards rushing 37 1 Yards passing 44 43 Passes-complete u-5 8-3 intercepted by 0 1 Fumbles lost 1 3 Yard penalized 0 25 catch the Saints, but needed to beat Lyons Saturday night. The Wildcats’ loss, however, left Whitman with a 2-2 record Victor and Lyons, both beaten by DeSales and involved in a scoreless tie against each other, fell out of the run- ning with 2-1-1 records. The Saints now close out their season at Whitman on Saturday, already assured of their first championship ever in football and the first in the newly aligned Wayne-Finger Lakes conference which now has two divisions. DeSales wasted little time in showing it wanted the title. The Saints kicked off on a soaked Victor field on which water stood in puddles almost everywhere. Steve Spychalski’s kick landed in a puddle on the Victor sidelines and stayed there A victor receiver apparently thought that the ball was out of bounds, but a DeSales player must have known better He fell on the ball or the V-30 and the Saints had possession. That may have been the mo6t im- portant play of this championship game In spite of a two yard loss on a fumbled snap on the first play from scrimmage, the Saints drove those 30 yards in nine plays, finally punching the ball over from three yards out on four hard drives at the line After losing two yards on the first A LOOK of concern flashes across DeSales Coach Harry Furman's face during action. Saturday, at Victor. side for seven as the Saints took the ball to the V-6. Saints weren't able to score again i the final period when the Blue D fumbled a punt on their own nine ; line. Then the Saints used three play score as Breslin picked up one y Corcoran carried for seven to the and then went off right guard for third touchdown Breslin caught a i pass from Iannopollo and raced inti end zone for the extra point and 10:23 left in the game, the Saints their 24-0 lead and their champions The DeSales defense was tough afternoon and never allowed the B Devils to get inside their 30 yard li In the second period, a 33 yard ru Gerry Sharp off the left side gave Devils the ball on the D-38, but four p later, Victor surrendered the ball oi D-33. In the final period, a fumble reco gave Victor the ball at midfield, but drive was stopped on the D-39. Those were the only two times Devils managed to penetrate Dei territory. Victor Coach George Miller c mented after the game that we m mistakes, but they beat us.
