Another lessus, a living, authentic lesus, iss truly present under the Cover and dissqiiisse at Peter , . . Father Mateo. 8 w GOLDEN JUBILEE OF OUR CHIEF SHEPHERD On April third of this year, our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, celebrated his Golden Sacerdotal lubilee. We of De Sales High School united with the Whole Catholic World in a crusade of prayer for our Holy Father on this holy and momentous occasion. Surely the heart of the Great White Shepherd rejoiced in the lov- ing manifestations of filial devotedness and loyalty which came to him from all parts of the World. Upon the shoulders of Pope Pius Xll rest the sorrows of the Whole World, its continual reformation and the moral regenera- tion of all mankind. St. Augustine said in speaking of priestly responsibilities: Formidable and crushing even for the shoulders of an angel! How much greater are the responsibilities of the Popel Regardless of race, color, or creed, Pope Pius Xll greets with tenderest marks of affection and kindly interest all who come to him with spiritual or temporal problems. He is indeed the x'Pope of the people, the Servant of the servants of God, the Father of all Christendom. May we, the students of De Sales High School, ever show our filial devotedness to him Whom we call Holy Father and may We ever invoke the Holy Spirit to love, comfort, bless and guide him in his sacerdotal ministry. 9 OUR BISHOP Most Reverend Iames E. Kearney, D.D. Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester May Christ, the Eternal Priest, bless our beloved Bishop and guide him in his apostolic labors as shepherd ot his llockl We will be ever grateful to him for his kindly interest in De Sales High School. 10 OUR MONSIGNOR The Very Reverend William H. McPcrdden, V.F. TO THE FRESHMEN lntroibo ad altare Dei might Well be the words on your lips, dear Fresh- men, as you enter upon your high school career. The Mass is the center of life -of your entire life. In the Mass you praise and glorify God through His be- loved Son Jesus Christ. Every single thing you do each day at school must be sanctified, made holy, by the purity of the intention with which you begin your work. When you sit at your desk, you may well think of it as an Altar. Your pencils, books and papers-these are your Paten and Chalice. The work that you do at your desk-your studying and learning-this is your gift to God. Your little daily sorrows, your hours of enjoyment in your social life, your en- thusiasms and activities-these, too, are your offering. Give them all, every moment of every day, every duty, every pleasure, to God. Make your intention each day with the Priest at the beginning of Holy Mass and renew your offering as you take your place in your classrooms each morning. Thus, your Freshman year, will be not only a sanctified entering into high school life, but a blessed entering into all of life which is centered in Holy Mass and in the union of your heart with the Heart of Christ. TO THE SOPHOMORES Gloria in excelsis Deo is the joyous song in your hearts as you enter upon your Work as high school sophomores. Yours is a year of joy in union with Christ in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Yours is the foolish wise-the happy and gay period of school life. Like the Gloria of the Mass this year should be one long hymn of praise to God. Each morning as you take up your daily tasks do so in a joyous spirit of love and praise. Carry this spirit into your social life, into your extra-curricular activities. Let the light of grace and joy shine in your eyes, speak from your lips, glow within your hearts. Let your Work and play be worthy of a praise offering to God. Let your every action bespeak love and adoration to the Eternal King. Let every moment of every day be filled with glory. And remember, dear Sophomores, to carry this joyous spirit with you through all the years of your life. TO THE JUNIORS We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clem- ency, that it may rise up in the sight of Thy divine majesty, as a savour of sweetness, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. What dignity and joy are yours, O juniors, to have as the keynote of your school year the beautiful Offertory prayerl Yours is a year of giving-giving all to God-in union with the Priest in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. You are offering to God your prayers, work, sacrifices, sorrows and joys. Whether you study at your desk, enjoy your social life, or add happiness to the lives of your loved ones at homeeat all times, at every moment, make your gift worthy of Him to Whom you are offering it. Many years ago in a parish in France, at the Offertory of the Mass, every- one came in procession to the Altar rail bearing the sign of his occupation: the mason brought his trowel: the carpenter brought his saw: the students brought their books: the children brought their balls and jumping ropes. Thus, all things must be brought to the Altar to be made holy by the Sacrifice of Our Lord Iesus Christ. This is your year of offering. Make each offering a worthy one. And remember, carry this practice with you all through life and your joys and sorrows will be sanctified. 34 NIOR BELLARMINE Wwe Rita McGuire, Margaret McWilliams and Patricia Flynn, achieved an average of QU '70 in the Work of their Iunior year, thus rneriting a place on the Bellarrnine list. From the very first We encountered many unusual and unprece- dented difficulties but We struggled on. We have endeavored to give to the students of De Sales a book of which they may be justly proud. We have given them a theme, not alone to be followed Within the covers of our 1949 book, but to serve as an ideal which they may follow all the days of their lives. Then, too, we have endeavored to give our friends a true picture of life at De Sales as it is lived spiritually, scholastically and socially. We hope you will like this number of the Salesian.
