Ckfivcteri Term iii Mission .lanuary T988 saw DePauw sTudenTs Travel To boTh hemispheres as parT of The Vllinfer Term in Mission Program. STaTeside, approxi- maTely 20 sTudenTs Traveled To Americus, Georgia, To perform consTrucTion work for HabiTaT for HumaniTy. ln addiTion To working on a house To be inhablTed by a family of 3, The group also Traveled To ATlanTa and CharlesTon, SouTh Carolina. lvluchilena, Hon- duras was home for forTy DePauw sTudenTs for The monTh. The consTrucTion crew asslsT- ed in The building of a convenTion cenTer To be used by The Episcopal Church. A roving medical crew provided help To several vil- lages in The surrounding area, TreaTing up To 200 people daily. The public healTh educa- Tion Team insTrucTed Honduran ciTizens on how To promoTe healThier living. Similar duTies were performed by The sTu- denTs who journeyed To ConcasTe, GuaTe- mala. However, This Team was besieged by bad luck, which was manifesTed in innumer- able plane delays and bus breakdowns, and a poTenT sTrain of bacTeria To which many Team members fell vicTim. According To ju- nior Jay Nichols, These problems led To The adopTion of The nickname The Third and long Team. DespiTe These difficulfies. The group was sTill able To accomplish iTs as- signed Tasks. AfTer a 49-hour plane Trip, The fourTh Team arrived aT lvlacTan Island, one of The 7100 islands in The Philippines. The consfrucfion Team surpassed iTs goal by building four early learning and nuTriTion cenTers. In addiTlon To 'The medical and healTh educarion Teams, a few sTudenTs TaughT English nursery rhymes and songs in a Filipino preschool. Upon Their reTurn, VVTIIVT veTerans sTaTed ThaT Their lives had been greaTly changed by The new friendships and new perspecTives ThaT had been gained during The monTh.
