1985 Mirage VOLUME 100 DePauw University Greencastle, Indiana 46135 2 Opening talllnll Rllllmllr Ifllk These DPU fans show their support for the Tigers during the Monpn Bell game at Wabash. The Tigers lost the game by a score of 41-26. Freshman Bruce Nelson strolls to class one fall afternoon. More Than Youid Expect From . . . Life At DePauw n August 25, 1984, 600 freshmen arrived to begin their college ca- reers. Expectations varied, but few people really get what they expect from college. First there was rush, pIacement tests and orientation. Would anyone believe college would be so much work? Then classes- began and DePauw wasn't so much fun anymore. Over time however, some freshmen discovered ways to make studying bearable. They joined the up- perclassmen and hung out with the books at the Hub or socialized on the second floor of Roy 0. Library. The freshmen soon memorized the phone numbers of every pizza place in Greencastle and every flavor of Delaney's ice cream. They could locate the boulder, the owl and the Iate-hours room. And they knew what Mofo and S 8: M really mean. Through the year, freshmen exper- ienced those unique activities e ali-cam- pus picnics, kiss-ins, Monon Bell, and Winter Term parties -w that make De- Pauw life special. No matter what happened to each stu- dent this year, it had to be more than you'd expect from life at DePauw. - Becky Fleming These students heid a taiI-gate party before the Monon Bell game. - Sophomore Derrick Osborne watches 1 game from the benc 4 Opening More Than You'd Expect From . . Students Like These erhaps the most vivid im- age I have from my fresh- man year at DePauw was a conversation I had during Orien- tation Week with a girl going through sorority rush. I asked the girl what she thought about DePauw, and she promptly answered, It's the Barbie and Ken doll school of the Midwest. Horrified, I won- dered what I had gotten myself into. Barbie and Ken doll A porn squad entertains the Tiger fans at ime to the tune of Dan Hannats marching I. school? Could there be any se- rious students at a place like this? The rest of my freshman year dampened my hopes. Reports that Color Me Beautiful was the bestnselling book at the DPU bookstore didn't help, nor did statements like I won't be in class much this week - it's hell week. I began to resign myself to the fact that DePauw would always be in a little bubble. Then one day a faculty mem- ber confided in me how he viewed students at DePauw. He said he gave them a personality grade in addition to a letter grade. One could be a GP, an L, or an I. A GP was a grade-pusher tself-explanatoryL and L was like- able, and an I was an individual e according to him, the highest mark he could give. He assured me they were out there, and I set out to find them. Slowly I discovered there were many people that I met in classes, in activities, and socially, striving for something higher than the glitter and the greek letters, people who were able to put DPU in perspective, and re- alize a world out there that was just waiting to be experienced. The individuals are here, every- where, the problem is you just have to see them. Certainly, not the kind of people you would expect from a place like this. - Ken JIennison s t;- Opening 5 - .- DPU students pose for a picture in the Big Apple. These students particiapxed in the GLCA New York Arts Program during the fall semester. The sailing club competes in the Ohio State Sailing Regatta. Glenn Romancruk More Than You'd Expect From . . . A School This Size acked to his bulletin board is a pic- ture from a dance. But its not from a DePauw fraternity or sorority house dance, it's from a spring ball that senior Lamont Clements attended in Merry Oide England during his year long stay at the University of Exeter. I became good friends with a couple of English pe0ple, but also with a person from Berlin studying at Exeter and an- other from Switzerland, he said. And there are times when I miss them and the whole Exeter scene. I plan on heading back to visit them soon, but not soon enough. , Pinned to another bulletin board is a 3 x 5 picture of junior Auburn Sheaffer standing outside the Louvre museum in Paris, France, with her arms laced to the shoulders of several French people. She too values these friends quite highly, I just mailed each of them a DePauw sweatshirt so as maybe to spread a bit of the black and gold around over there. But whether they spend a semester or year in Exeter, Strasbourg, Barcelona, Li- beria, or Bagota, DePauw students on ex- change programs exchange more than just themselves. As well as consuming culture from other parts of the world, they spread a little bit of the black and gold within them with people and places far and wide throughout the world . . . more than you'd expect from a school this size. - Bob Gynn 8 Campus Life Division ifs more than you'd expect Campus Life Division 9 Qchdl Geld The Tradition Continues Old Gold is a tradition. It is a time when alumni return to their alma mater - a time to remember and a time to be remembered. At DePauw, students are used to seeing friends together. During Old Gold weekend, friends who no longer live across campus from one an- other can be together again. This year's Old Gold was a time for the students, faculty, alumni, and com- munity to be entertained. Some at- tempts for entertainment failed. The huge hot air balloon failed to rise due to the strong wind. The same breeze grounded the sky jumper. But Tiger victory entertained the crowd. It was the Tiger's 22nd victory at home when they beat the Kenyon Lords 38-12. Becky Brumbaugh, senior, won the Old Gold queen crown. And Bamboo, a live bengal tiger, jogged around the track at half time. The game, broadcast nationally on ESPN, drew a ctowd which packed the Little Giants' stadium. To further the enthusiasm of De Pauw fans, the Union Board fur- nished porn poms, noisemakers, and bumper stickers. In the atmosphere of rivalry be- tween the two teams, the Tigers and Little Giants struggled for possession of the Monon Bell. While the Tigers put forth a strong performance with senior Steve Shadoan's 40-yard field goal and completed touchdown pass to junior Tim Weaver, Wabash ended up winning the game and the traditional Monon Bell with a score of 41-26. 11. ::g 14 Campus Life Campus Life 15 Fall Parents Weekend DPU Dads And Moms Watch Tigers Beat Albion 21-6 Some parents strolled around cam- pus enjoying the fall weather. Others relaxed in the Hub. Some went to the variety of shows and exhibits for enter- tainment. But all of the parents who attended Fall Parents Weekend, September 29 and 30, spent the time catching up on the news from their son or daughter. Parents and children gathered in the UB lobby for a student-parent mixer, and the Career Planning and Placement Center held an open house. The Colle- gians performed in Bowman Park. Some families saw Little Theater's pro- duction Blithe Spirit after the steak fry in the UB. The parents who went to the football game watched the Tigers win their 21st home game in-a-row in Blackstock. But, the Tiger's exciting scratching and scrapping were sometimes too little, too late. DePauw coach Nick Mourou- zis posted his fourth consecutive win- ning season in as many tries. The Tigers finished 6-4. DePauw opened the season with a hard fought'14-7 victory over a scrappy Illinois Wesleyan team. Senior co-cap- tain Rich Bonaccorsi scored his 27th ca- reer touchdown to etch his name in Tiger record books. The four-year run- ning back, who didn't miss a start, fin- ished with 35 touchdowns to close out a stellar career. Bonaccorsi was also named the team's offensive MVP. 114 Football The gridders traveled to 6th ranked Hope College where the Tiger-Dutch- men rivalry has heated up ever since the 1984 NCAA basketball regionals. The Cardiac Cats fell behind 34-7 be- fore running off 19 straight points in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Tony deNicola threw for a record 367 yards in 49 attempts, but his and the Tiger efforts fell short, 34-26. The Tigers routed Olivet Nazarene, 56-14, and soundly defeated Albion 21- 6 in front of a Parent's Day crowd. De- Pauw succumbed to highly rated Deni- son 21-20, but bounced back to beat Rose-Hulman 20-3. The Tigers impres- sively shut out Washington Univ. 42-0, and coasted to a 37-12 victory over J Kenyon on Old Gold weekend. The season ended on a hard note. DePauw lost to 3rd ranked Dayton, and stubbornly gave up the Bell to Wabash, 41-26. Number Three usually meant 'six' for DePauw. Junior receiver Tim Weaver set records in game, season, and career TD receptions with 3, 11, and 16 respectively, as he garnered the team's MVP award. Junior Scott Stetson was named lineman of the year while senior Joe Wrona claimed defensive player of the year. Senior co-captain Andrew King was named Tiger of the Year, and freshman Kevin Burns gar- nered rookie of the year. Kevin Holla- han was voted most improved. DePauw hustled its way to a fast start the first half of the season, but came crashing down with a 15 match skid to end the season. The Tigers did show their potential at the beginning of the season. DePauw finished second in the 10-team Great Lakes College Association tournament. The Tiger netters won their opening match over Kenyon College but lost to host Wooster College in the second round. Advancing through the laser's 1 16 Volleyball and Kalamazoo. Versus Kalamazoo, the Tigers kept their hopes alive with an exciting 15-0, 8-15, 16-14 victory. DePauw then beat Earlham College, 15-12 and 18-16. The Tigers pulled the tournament's biggest upset when they up ended Hope College in two games, 16-14 and 15-5. Hope was just over- confident, and we played one of our best matches all season, noted Feder- man. With that win, DePauw advanced to the championship game against ne- misis Wooster. The host team greeted the Tigers with a 15-5, 15-2 lesson in volleyball and sent home DePauw with the runner's-up trophy. snatched two of three matches. The Ti- gers beat arch-rival Manchester Col- lege 16-14, 1-15, 15-10 after losing to Oakland City and its tree-size front line. In the nightcap DePauw handily defeated Earlham 15-13 and 15-6. Behind the strong hittingtblocking trio of sophomores Suzanne Miller, Tina Steelman, and Roni Embry, the Ti- gers finally put together a front line to contend with. Finishing at 10-5-1 and ranked 10th in the Great Lakes Region -- one of the toughest in Division III play - coach Page Cotton's kickers combined young frosh talent and experienced team leadership to win 8 of their last 10 matches. According to Cotton, the Tigers turned around their season when they swept two games on a road trip to Illi- nois. DePauw shut out Principia 2-0 and Greenville 3-0 marking that the first time the Tigers have ever done that. That sweep pulled the team together. It gave up the confidence we needed to know we could win, said Cotton. After their successful road trip, De- Pauw tied on four more victories to compile the longest winning streak in Tiger soccer history. Victims were Blackburn, 3-0, Marion, 4-2, Rhodes, 2- O, and Maryville, 2-1. Nationally ranked Washington University snapped the Ti- ger string with a 5-2 triumph. The Little Giants ended DePauw's season on a sour note as they beat the Tigers 2-1 on Wabash turf. Senior Jim Miliotes, Tiger MVP, was selected to the first team aII-Midwest squad, AIl-American team for the third year, and aIl-Illinoiandiana confer- ence. Joining Miliotes on the all-con- ference team were second team selec- tions sophomore goalie Brad Hauter, sophomore fullback Dave Holub, and senior co-captain and fullback Mark Populorum. Rob Farinholt garnered most improved player award. Despite losing Miliotes and Populorum to graduation, the Tiger future looks bright, noted Cotton, with six starting rookies returning, including freshmen standouts Dave Bagley, Brian Jaworski, Jim Hand, and Greg Fox. Laura Clymel' hmEEU F55.- 119 EEEU 8:3 120 STRUGGLED through youth and in- experience, and to a 2-12-2 overall re- cord. The Tigers, with coach Judy George at the helm, lacked the offen- sive punch needed to win several tied or one-goal matches. DePauw suffered through eight losses and two semi-sat- isfying ties before picking up an out right win over Marion College, 3-2. DePauw was turned away from victo- ry a number of times. Against Hanover, the two squads battled to a 2-2 tie be- fore deciding the match three over- times later. After the marathon contest, Hanover walked away tired winners 3- 2, the Tigers even more exhausted los- ers. DePauw peaked at the end of the season just in time for the Indiana State Tournament. The Tigers slipped by Marion for their first win, and dropped a 1-0 decision to a scrappy Goshen team just before the tournament. The Tigers got revenge against Han- over with a 3-1 victory. Sophomore Kim Edgar put DePauw on the score- board first with a goal only four min- utes into the contest. Colleen Konicek added another 12 minutes later before Hanover cut the lead to 2-1 at the half. Freshman Julie Thompson sealed the win with another goal in the second half. The win earned DePauw a semi- final match against perennial power- house Earlham College. The Quakers jumped in front early and built a 4-0 lead that DePauw could not overcome. Sophomore Denise Knight saved the Tigers from being shutout with a tally late in the match. Defensively, senior Emily Cline and sophomore Shana Horan shone, while Edgar received NAIA District 21 all- team honors. Knight was an honorable mention selection. Pauw saw lots of competition for the fall action, and most of that competi- tion came against larger schools. The Tigers opened the season with an excellent showing at the Butler lnvi- tational. DePauw finished fourth of eight teams. Then, the Tigers traveled to Taylor University for one of their bigger invitationals. Sixteen squads raced for the title, including the Tigers. But, an off day for the Tiger harriers placed them 10 in the field of 16. DePauw then hosted a medley of 122 Cross Country their own on the friendly rolling hills of Windy Hills Country Club. Ten teams from around the state showed up in full force for the three, four, and five mile events. The Bulldogs of Butler Univer- sity captured first place overall, bol- stered by their team depth. Rose-Hul- man followed at second place, while the Tigers wound up sixth. Senior Mike Solmos finished an im- pressive seventh among 26 runners in the three-mile competition at the De- Pauw Medley. Senior Brad Crandell was the Tiger's top finisher in the four-mile event, and sophomore Brad Bussewitz claimed seventh place in the five-mile. DePauw finished out the season on the road. The Tigers took ninth of 11 teams at the Purdue Invitational. But, the real heart-breaker of the season was a one-point loss, 28-27, to rival Wa- bash. al DePauw News Bureau GRAPPLED through another season under the helm of Lee Schoenfeld, head coach. Senior Andrew King and junior Scott Plesha paced the Tigers as they have in the past. The Tigers com- peted in three invitationals and two dual meets, including their own tour- nament. DePauw managed to fare better in the invitationals than the dual meets. ln dual meets, lack of Tiger depth hurt DePauw against larger squads. The Lit- tle Giants skunked the Tiger grapplers, 51-0 in a convincing win. Millikin Uni- versity from Ohio, followed in a similar manner with a 48-7 thrashing of De- Pauw. But, at the lnvitationals, DePauw gave a better showing. The Tigers finished tenth of fourteen teams in the Mid- Western Invitational. They closed the season with a thirteenth of eighteen teams placing at the Elmhurst lnvita- tional. Wrestling 123 SPRINTED to an outstandinggventh place finish in the Nation over 60,0ther Division ill schools. The Tigers came home from Georgia with a national champion, a third place finisher, and relay teams that placed in five events. Needless to say, for coach Mary Bretcher and her Tigers it was their most successful season ever. Freshman. Midi Smyth backstroked her way to first place and the national championship in the 100 meter event with a pool record 59.92. She became the first swimmer in school history to become a national champ. In addition, freshman Nancy Critter capped a fan- tastic season with a third place finish in 124 Women's Swimming the always competitive 50 meter frees- tyle. Critter, seeded 29th originally, surprised everyone, as did the entire DePauw team. Relay teams fueled the Tiger cause the rest of the way. The 200 medley relay took fourth place; the 400 medley relay took fifth; the 200 freestyle relay snagged third place; the 400 freestyle relay captured sixth place; and the 800 meter relay took seventh. The six Tiger swimmers - Critter, Smyth, Patty Montgomery, Kathy Evans, Amy Dol- liver, and Sarah Ames - were all named all-American, and set new De- Pauw records in each event. The season looked bright from the start, The Tigers finished with a 4-2 dual meet record, second in the Wheaton Invitational, and successfully defended their Liberal Arts Invitational for the third year in a row. DePauw beat Whit- tenberg 67-48, and lost to Division I Butler 57-56 before storming into Wheaton. The Tigers put their highest ever point total in the books and quali- fied in six events for Nationals early in the season. Other results were a crushing win over St. Mary's 100-31, and tough losses to Ball State 86-54 and Evansville 69-44. Without last year's MVP and rebounding strength, it seemed that DePauw's chances as the 'Cinderelia' team at the NCAAs were shot. But, behind the strong team lead- ership of seniors Craig MCAtee and Brent Erhman, and playmaking magic of junior Phil Wendel, the Tigers ex- tended the home win streak to 36 games and finished ranked 16th in the final Division III poll. DePauw found itself in the toughest regional. Facing host Wittenberg Uni- versity, the nation's number one team, 126 Men's Basketball DePauw lost 70-62. The Great Lakes Regional proved hard on the Tigers, who dropped a heart-breaking one point decision to Otterbein in the con- solation game, 79-78. Coach Mike Steele's cagers solved early-season inconsistency, winning ten of their last eleven contests. Two of those came against NAIA powerhouse Taylor University, 72-56, and IUPUI. The Tigers also swept Wabash for the first time since the 1977-78 season. De- Pauw thrashed the Little Giants 81-66 in Crawfordsville, and then kept their home win streak in tact with a thrilling 70-67 double overtime win at the end of the regular season. Wendel shattered Ted Rutan's career assist record, handing out 160 this sea- son alone, to set the new mark at 425. In addition, Wendel lead the team in scoring with a 9.6 average and in steals. The Tigers voted him MVP. Freshman Mike Connor surprised everyone, es- pecially the opposition, maturing early enough to be a force on the boards. Connor was named offensive player of the year for his 9.5 points per contest contribution. Sophomore Scott Lewis garnered defensive honors, while sophomore David Galle earned re- bounding honors. Laura Clymer Laura Clymer Laura Clymer Men's Basketball 127 WITH TIGER 'PAWER' behind them all the way, the men's swimming team posted another strong season for coach Joe Condon. Though the men did not have the magic the women possessed, they qualified swimmers Brad Bendle t50 m freestyle and Greg Pitner 000 m breaststroke and diver Alistair Frost for nationals. Frost somersaulted his way to aII-Americat honors in the one-meter diving competition, placing 6th overall. It was the highest finish for any DePauw male swimmer or diver at nationals. 128 Men's Swimming DePauw recorded a 3-3 dual meet mark against schools often loaded with scholarship athletes. The Tigers beat Butler 66-47 and Wittenberg 75-38 be- fore Claiming third place at the always- tough Wheaton Invitational. DePauw found itself on the short side of a 50-66 score to Division II Indiana Central but bounced back to swim handily by rival Wabash, 71-42. The Tigers suffered two losses at the hands of Millikin 39-75 and Missouri-St. Louis, 54-57. Condon's Tigers returned to home waters for the annual Liberal Arts Invi- tational. The men completed a DePauw sweep of the meet outdistancing sec- ond place Wabash. Frost won the three-meter diving competition, and sophomore George Massey came from nowhere to snag three first place fin- ishes and propel the Tigers to the team victory. 3g - a RNomen's. .3 J 0 a Lisa Baker 5! 11L RODE A ROLLERCOASTER through the season finishing 5-15 for first-year coach Pat Dowdell. The Tigers used rookie talent and upperclassmen sup- port to take second place in the GLCA tourney. The potential was there for the Ti- gers; it was just a matter of finding it. Senior Cathy McCracken provided leadership and experience under the boards, while incoming frosh gave youth and eagerness. Freshmen Jenny Bauer and Shelley Hunter along with sophomore transfer Suzanne Miller sparked the Tigers with some fresh tal- ent. Juniors Michele Daily, Sandra Far- row, Mesha McCarty and Laura Clymer added stability. 130 Womenis Basketball DePauw started the season with a bang taking second place in the GLCA tourney. After defeating Kenyon Col- lege, 59-56, and Earlham College 53-33, the Tigers took on powerhouse Albion College. DePauw fell to the tall Britons, 66-48. After that impressive showing, the Tigers began a nine game skid that fi- nally ended with a thrilling 67-66 victo- ry over rival Anderson College. The Ti- gers almost ended the losing streak two games earlier when the dropped a heart-breaker to last yearis National Christian College Champs, Huntington College, 77-74. In that contest, Bauer set a women's Tiger record with 40 points to pace DePauw. Bauer shot a sizzling 18 for 21 from the field, four for four from the line. But, it wasn't enough as the tough Forester front line combined for 45 points and held off the Tigers. DePauw finished the season with an on the road victory over Hanover Col- lege to finish 5-15. Bauer led the Tigers with a 15.1 points per game average and 41 assists. Daily popped in 11.9 points a game to provide DePauw with a fine one-two back court punch. In contrast to last year's rainy, dis- mal season, the sun and future Tiger talent shone for coach Ed Meyer, who completed his 21st season at the helm of DePauw baseball. The Tigers stayed in form over Spring Break traveling to Florida to face four Division II clubs. On their way down south, the Tigers played a doublehead- er against 3rd-ranked Valdosta State College - V.S.C. won the national championship in 1979. After losing the first game, the Tiger nine rebounded the next afternoon for a come-from- behind 13-11 upset victory. Down by two and with the bases loaded, junior 132 Baseball Jeff Rapasky singled in the tying runs. Freshman Chris Fix showed no signs of rookie inexperience as he followed with a two-run single that put DePauw ahead for good. DePauw dropped its last four games to close out the trip. According to Meyer, the other big win of the season came against LU- .P.U.l. in the Tiger's last doubleheader of the season. Trailing 3-1 in the final inning with senior Marv Flewellen on base, Meyer went to his bench and sent Fix to the plate. Fix responded with a run-scoring single. Again Meyer turned to youth when he pulled Jim Sandgren from the pine to pinch hit. Sandgren pounded a two-run shot over the fence for the Tiger win. As a team, the Tigers batted an excel- lent .310, and fielded a sharp .941. But, DePauw's achilles heel was on the mound and in the bullpen. With a total- ly underclassmen pitching staff, the Ti- ger hurlers couldn't keep opponents 'off the base paths. Yet, as Meyer noted, that means the entire staff returns along with team MVP, junior infielder, David Chalmers. Frosh Matt Moodhe was named rookie of the year, while sophomore John Getgy led DePauw with a .365 batting average, and was named to the aIl-District squad. The young and talented Tigers overcame early season inexperi- ence to finish 10-18, the best record in DePauw softball history, and champs of the Manchester Tourney. Behind the pitching of senior hurler Cathy Coda and the bats of juniors Laura Clymer and Michele Daily and freshman Jenny Bauer, the Tigers manufactured a re- spectable season for rookie coach Pat Dowdell. In Districts, DePauw faced number one seeded iUPUI in the opening round and gave the Metros a run for their money. The Tigers dropped a 3-1 heart-breaking decision. Later that night, Grace College eliminated De- I34 Softball Pauw with a 9-5 win. A doubleheader versus Grace and Taylor University proved instrumental as the Tigers turned around their sea- son after Spring Break. DePauw and Grace battled to a 3-3 tie before decid- ing the game in 11 innings. Clymer knocked in frosh shortstop Linda Reit- veId for the winning run, her fourth rbi and third hit of the contest. In the nightcap, DePauw held off a late Taylor rally for a 11-9 victory. But, it was the Manchester Tourney that decided the Tiger's fate. DePauw upset Division II Valparaiso, 7-6, on a winning run-scoring double by sopho- more Stephanie Martenson to upend the confident Crusaders. The Tigers then snatched the championship from the host Spartans, and brought home their first tournament trophy. De- Pauw's clutch performance in the tour- ney earned them a spot in the NAIA District playoffs. The Tigers lost Coda, who completed a respectable three year career but re- turn the remaining starters, including All-District selection Clymer. The ju- nior leftfielder led the squad in batting average L3881 and rbis H11. Bauer proved a tough leadoff hitter, hitting .302, while Daily complemented her strong glove on third base with a .292 average. DePauw won Little State over nine other teams and finished third out of 10 in the GLCAs, reflecting the team's 136 Menis Tennis depth. The Tigers avenged their GLCA finish on a weekend road trip to Ohio. DePauw crushed Wooster, 8-1, Ohio Weslyan, 8-1, and Wittenberg, 7-2 in the instrumental weekend. These three impressive wins along with a season ' opener skunking of then - 6th ranked Washington University, 9-0, proved to be highlights of the season. The Tiger netters took on three Divi- sion l opponents and succumbed to Ball State, Miami University, and West- ern Michigan. But, they bounced back to defeat Rose-Hulman at the end of the season. Other Tiger victories came over Butler, Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Wabash. Emery College and Ripon College managed to hand DePauw their other two losses. Kite finished the regular season ranked 34th in the nation, while Reese claimed the 56th place. As a team, they combined for an impressive 14th na- tional ranking. The KitewReese combo finished 10-2 overall; while number five singles player, sophomore James Groh- man, posted the best record at 16-2 in singles play and 12-1 in doubles action. They ushered in the 20th century when three DEC Rainbow computers were brought through the door. They arrived just in time for the staff to produce several issues electronically. Finally, the staff ap- peared like any other college staff of the mid 19705. The DePauw published more in-depth feature articles on such stories as student entrepeneurs, suicide and affirmative action. The news staff covered student government elections, the cocaine crack- down and the Psychedelic Furs and General Public concerts I Late deadlines t2 or 3 a.mJ were common, but the 7 a.m. deadline really was too much for the first semester staff of The DePauw. They stayed up late to produce the special eight-page insert section honoring the 75th anniversary of the Society of Profes- sional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi. s;,. New regular features included the expanded campus calendar of ' current events, the sports scoreboard boxes and more regular edito- rials. The paper enjoyed greater feedback from its readers through an increase in letters and guest columns. In the fall, The DePauwts advertising staff produced and hosted an ad sales seminar attended by students across the Midwest. The paperts writers and editors improved their techniques with the help of two visiting journalists, Mary Ganz, assistant city editor of the San Francisco Examiner, and Paul Martin, front page editor of the Wall Street Journal. They gave tips on writing, reporting and career opportunities. Lynn Cameron SDX Hosts N ational Convention The highlight of the year for Sigma Delta Chi, the journal- ism honorary, was the national convention of SDX that was held on the DePauw campus this year. College and professional journalists came from all over the country to the society,s birthplace, and DePauw SDX members played host to the visitors. Not only did they pass out copies of the DePauw, run ballots on the convention floor and point the way to bath- rooms, but they attended the seminars and luncheon held to study and celebrate the field of journalism. In the fall, SDX sponsored a chapel with Mike Ahern from WISH-TV. In the spring, the members attended the Hall of Fame induction dinner in which Helen Thomas, the UPI corre- spondent, was the keynote speaker. All of the SDX founders who had not been in- ducted previously, were in- ducted at his dinner. The mem- bers enjoyed the keynote speaker, but relished the prime rib more. This, the 75th anniversary of SDX, was basically a year of inactivity for the chapter - with a few moments of excite- ment, the convention and the induction dinner.
