Freshmen are now the hlittle people - no more high school heroesh Home town honeys are hesitantly left behind as the tears are flicked aside. The decision to go Greek or to remain independent creates a pressure situation. The naive eighteen year olds are thrust into a strange environment and expected to choose the course they will follow for the rest of their lives. What a heavy load to carry! All the hassles are worth it though, for the friends, hard work, and maturity soon become second nature. There was so much to do and to see - the game, the floats, the par- ties, and friends old and new. It was a special time for the alumni who flocked back to their alma mater, 0P DPU, for the weekend. It was a time filled with reac- quaintance and nostalgia. Even with a Ti- ger loss to Valparaiso, 6-0, spirits re mained high. As the crowd cheered her on, senior Delta Gamma, Patty Stevens was crowned Old Gold Queen. As the beauti- ful day drew to a close, many tired alumni journeyed home with more DePauw memories to add to their collections. On a chilly November day, the 10th to be exact, hundreds of students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and friends of the University gathered on the vacant lot 'next to the Science and Math Center to break ground for the new Lilly Physical Education and Recreation Center. Presi. dent Richard F. Rosser, Student Body President Shea Nickell, and others spoke at the ceremonies. Observers and golden balloons outlined the building plan. Imme- diately after the firing of a Revolutionary War cannon, the balloons were released, spades entered the muddy ground for the first time, and state and local television focused on the action. One must take time to think about oth- ers that are less fortunate. DePauw,s many philanthropic programs donate ' time and money toward worthwhile causes, and the students have fun at the same time. The Sigma Chits held a week long trampoline marathon in memory of a brother. Their battle to attain money for leukemia proved successful as they sur- passed their $10,000 goal. The Tri Del- ta,s put on a spaghetti dinner and the Alpha Omicrom Pi women plunged into their annual blood drive. These efforts are well worth the satisfaction received from the unselfish giving. Students often find themselves asking what IS the purpose of all the study, late nights, toil, and anxiety? Many students began resolv- ing this question by talking with and ques- tioning professionals who are already out in the real world, Some of these profes- sionals gathered on the DePauw campus October 26th, in the Union Building. The Career Fair was sponsored by Academic Council. Seniors were not the only students in- terested in this Career Fair; underclass- men also took advantage of this opportu- nity to look into the future. h After Four Years . . . The Future Career Fair 27 The Super Star weekend, sponsored by the Campus Board, was held on March 14, 15, and 16. The final competition took place on Sunday the 16th for both women and men. Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Alpha Theta beat Rector and Bishop Roberts in a close race to the end, while Sigma Nu and Delta Chi defeated Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Hogate also by a nar- row margin. The events were packed with nervous excitement and the spirit of competition was omnipresent. Par- ticipation is keen inlthat students, faculty, administrators, and others all desire the limited dinner tickets. Early in the fall semester a successful Casino Night was staged in the Union Building. This event was sponsored by the Union Board. Money was spent be- fore it even had a chance to reach a pocket. Some were lucky, some were not, some were skilled and some ad libbed, but everyone tried their hand at the many different games and all enjoyed themselves. It was instituted and constructed by De- Pauw students over Winter Term 1980. The disco is located in the Mason Hall basement. . The Tigers were on top 13-3 in the third quar- ter, but the Wabash Little Giants retaliat- ed with two touchdowns to walk off with I the bell, 16-13. This was alsb the teamis fourth consecutive winning campaign. The team didntt receive a bid for the NCAA Division III playoffs though, after having been invited for the past three years. Tim Werner was named most valuable player in his final year at DePauw. He made a smashing comeback to the Tiger lineup after quadruple-bypass heart surgery in Jan- uary. Werner was one of three seniors on the team. Tim Meyer was named Rookie of the Year and Stuart Ringel received the Bullpen Award. A doubleheader split with Big Ten oppo- nent Purdue, highlighted the season. After losing 3-2 in the first game, the Tigers rallied to win 1-0 in the second contest. Art Student Committee, headed by the illustrious Matt Fischer, had a great year. Their major success was the All Campus Student Art Exhibit. Earnest Boyd received the Purchase Award of $100.00 for his painting entitled HChild Fantasy. Bill Georgas received $50.00 as a Best In Show Award for his painting uElaine. Two $25.00 Merit Awards went to Najmeh Sadri and Diane Selvy. The Fritz Smith Award, for the best painting or drawing, was split between Bill Georges and Mary Ridgeway. Two Senior Art Shows revealed the talents of the senior art majors - Najmeh Sadri, Diane Selvy, Earnest Boyd, ReBecca Bower, Betsy Morris, Carlos Davila, Cathleen Madigan, Mary Ridgeway, Steven Rudascis, and Janet Spence. These people spent the major part of the year preparing for these shows. Students expanded their horizons by traveling north, to Chicago, to see the Toulouse'Lautrec exhibit and then east, with the commercial design class, to Cincinnati to visit Proctor and Gamble. Art Student Committee ended the year with a Motherts Day Art Sale on East College lawn. Life is tough in the big city. After sophomore year at DePauw, the junior nursing students make the big move to ' , , ; beautiful downtown Indianapolis. No n s ' 7 V more keggars, no more cooks and wait- - 4 gal ers, no more country runs, and no more ' - . - skipping classes. The Indianapolis nursing Methodist , t - students attend classes and clinical at the . . e , Methodist Hospital, engage in community HOSpltal n' health nursing, and study a lot. Many of the students attend one class on campus during the fall semester of each year. Most of the junior and senior nursing students live in hospital apartments, lo- cated next door to Methodist. No one ever said it was going to be easy! Itts a long, hard road to success in nursing, but the world of nursing is chal- lenging, exciting, and most of all, it's per- sonally rewarding. The girls pictured here, to the left, are members of Sigma Theta Tau, the nurs- ing honor society. Each member is care- fully selected by the faculty and mem- bers. They attend- ed the College Democratic convention in Indianapolis in February, and also worked in the local elections. The History Club, a.k.a. Mu Chi Al- pha lThe Beard, Beard, and Beveridge Societyl, started the year off with the election of officers over light refresh. ments at the Chairman of the History Departmenfs home. Next came a field trip to the Covered Bridge Festival in Rockville. The club also held a book sale and organized a lecture by Hazel Long- den. Then they had a Christmas party with exploding cookies and a poker game for pretzels. Second semester the organi- zation sponsored a panel discussion of Afghanistan, featuring Amir Rafat, Ger- ald Fleetwood, and Jack Wright. The year came to a close with the annual awards banquet. The College Republicans, in an efv fort to establish a strong working relation- ship with the Republicans of Putnam County, found themselves more active than ever before, in local election cam- paigns, party strategy sessions, and of course, victory celebrations. The Col- lege Republicans also welcomed to campus Senator Dick Lugar, speaker for the Putnam County Lincoln Day Dinner, and Judy Palmer, the Outstanding Young Woman of America l1979l and the only woman on Indiana Governor Otis Bowenls executive cabinet. Extending be- yond the grassroots level, individual members were involved with the cam- paigns of several national candidates. Around the state, Indiana College Repub- licans elected two DePauw representa- tives to the offices of state vice-chairman and state treasurer. The Sociology and Anthropology Club was a new organization on campus that focused major energies on drafting and approving their constitution first se- mester. Officers were elected and the group was officially recognized by Senate at the end of the semester. Students were also invited to and attended various re- gional sociological conferences. Second semester, the club concentrat- ed on listening to guest lectures by appli- cants for two faculty openings, one in the Sociology and one in the Anthropology Departments. Students were allowed to provide valuable input to aid the hiring process. The year ended with a picnic for seniors in the organization. 196 Commitments COLLEGE DEMOCRATS - Row 1 - Randy Forbes, David Kraus, Dr. Robert Sedlack, Mark Lehman, Keith Howard. For the first time, par- ticipation points were combined, with fi- nal standing, to decide the overall winner. The year was highlighted by single elimi- nation soccer that sparked an interest in almost all living units. Also successful were the Pumpkin Pie Race, basketball and volleyball. The Meats Intramural Board had an unusual number of controversies, which caused some revisions in their constitu- tion. The fall sports were football, volley- ball, golf, tennis, wrestling, table tennis, and bowling. Spring sports included swimming, basketball, badminton, soft- ball, track, and handball. The Judo Club placed third in the Midwest Regional Tournament, which was quite an accomplishment. It took a lot of practice and dedication. Normally, the club,s members spent five hours a week training. Nlads started the year with a practice every Sunday night. They were working towards the Mom,s Weekend perfor- mance, which was in April. The show, itWH 0? featured Ken Owen, famous WGRiE personality. The girls swam to popular radio tunes. The year ended with a picnic. The Fellowship 0! Christian Ath- letes, after three years of stagnation, boosted their membership quite a bit. On the average, 16-20 members attended each of the weekly meetings. These meetings normally included a film, Bible studies, and t or singing. The group would like to increase fellowship on the DePauw campus. That was followed by the art sale on East College lawn, Parents Weekend. The sale profited $400. As the end of the year approached, so did the Kingsley Slide Marathon. Armed with popcorn and No-Doz, the students were treated to the show of their lives. The DePauw Outdoors Club kept nature enthusiasts busy all year round. Since the clubs founding in 1978, bike trips, camping trips, natural history slide shows, hiking, canoeing, cook-outs, and an energy symposium were organized in an attempt to offer members an enjoy- able alternative to keggars and academia. The club, open to all students and faculty, has been successful in attracting partici- pants from all academic pursuits. The Pom Squad took the field in new uniforms. They performed their enter- taining routines at the home football games, and at a few basketball contests. To raise money, the Poms held numerous slave sales at different fraternities. Cap- tain Jill Scott led the Poms with help from assistants Sherrie Bowman and Brenda Beck. The 1979-80 Cheerleadlng Squad had a busy year. Besides cheering at all football and basketball contests, they led the cheers at the new athletic complex ground digging, and they led alumni in cheers at the annual Alumni Banquet be- fore the Homecoming game. The financial end of the book looked dubious early in the year, but with the help of a strong business manager things picked up. Organization was the key to smooth operating stratagem. The DePauw kept a hard working staff up late at night 4-8 times during the year V18 issues, get it?t and the great thing was that nobody ever complained about staying at The Pub until three or four in the morning on Sunday and Wednesday. At least not too much, be- cause along with giving DePauw one of the best campus newspapers tor a college its size, The DePauw gave those stu- dents a lot of fun and camaraderie. The paper didntt look the same. It got a face lift to help bring it into the 805 from somewhere back in the 505. It also con- tinued to be published twice a week, pro- vide a training ground for potential jour- nalists and irritate the Administration. 50 whatts new? The Debate Team completed one of its most active and successful seasons, under the twenty-fifth year of coach Rob- ert Weiss, The team was high in national rankings, both in C.E.D.A. and I.S.T.R. ratings. Specializing in parliamentary de- bates, the team participated in ten such debates against teams from Wabash, But- ler, Ohio State, and the University of Illi- nois. The season ended with a debate of reinstituting the draft, on Parenfs Day. Barbara McHugh coached the successful novice squad. In addition to debating, the team sponsored its annual Student Con- gress. They were an Admissions Weekend attraction, they performed in a Chaplainst Living Units Council tCLUCt program, and on Dadts Day. These vocal- ists traditionally serenade on campus, be- fore an appearance, to promote the up- coming performance. Sixteen men consti- tuted the group. Although they lost over half of their members, the Collegians were as active as ever, and had a very productive year. After early auditions they perfected their Dad,s Weekend show. They also enter- tained the Moms, but with a few new faces. ttOff-Campust' performances, hub shows, and Admissions banquets kept them busy throughout the year. Century Singers began the year with the Monon Bell concert. This included a performance with a Wabash group. Christmas brought the annual Madrigal Dinner, and January took the singers on a tour to New Orleans where they sang in various churches. Duzer Du, the very select honorary dramatic society, required its new mem- bers to have worked three shows before being voted in. The group, as a whole, presented Hot 1. Baltimore. They also sponsored I Never Sang For My Fa- ther, Waiting For Godot, and Same Time Next Year. MEN OI NOTE - Row 1 -Joe Farinella, Bruce Lueke, Matt Patterson, Beth Briskey, Matt Holiday.
