While living in apartments near the hospital, nursing students spend two days a week in class and two in a clinical environment, learning patient care. Winter Terms can be spent learning more about specialized nursing, such as surgical nursing. DePauwhs nursing program, which offers on and off-campus experience, provides the best of both worlds. ma S E I T I V I T C A 33 Freshman Week: Fears, tears, and lots of gfrushing99 around This yeafs Freshman Week was not much different from all the other ends of August: nervous good- byes to parents, hellos to new friends and roommates, the initia- tion to keggers, trying to fit inh . . . Members of the 1933 undefeated football team returned to see DePauw defeated by Indiana Central, 26-0. Although the score disappointed alums and stu- dents, spirits werenht squelched, as fans built floats, paraded with ban- ners, and welcomed alums back home? before, during and after the game. TL.- 39 Diverse activities fill first semester -11th I: From medieval Christmas parties to Monon Bell Weekend. What a combination! Actually, theyhre just a a few examples of how diverse DePauw can be. The Monon Bell started a fury this year when the Sigma Chis sneaked Hover lo Wabash to steal the famed symbol of rivalry. Later on, chaos reigned when most of the Wabash men appeared to pick it ! up. The Sig Chis responded by h driving the bell to Indianapolis, sending the Cavemen on a Chase to retrieve it. We lost the game, but not the weekend. LO ,: The Madrigal dinner, as usual, was sold out far in advance. The feast, popular for years because of the good food and the authentic madrigal tunes, is even fun for the performers: Richard Roberts and Kyle Bradford seem to be enjoying themselves! how 41 Duck Goes Up in Flames, But Artists Still Perform When The Fluttering Ducky DePauwis oldest gathering place, sud- denly caught on firewimd burned to the ground this January, students worried about finding a place with equal char- acter in which to study, snack, or per- form. They organized a Save the Duckii campaign to rebuild the land- mark and to aid Maybelle Hamm, the Ducks owner. In the meantime, stu- dents continued creating on their own: musicals during Winter Term, 21 dance program in the spring, and a Save the Duckw marathon featuring original poetry and music. And yes, the Ducks 0f Dixieland are alive and well. The UB ballroom doesn,t, perhaps, have quite the same atmosphere as the Duck, but the music is still great! 42 .2 v; 43 Little 500: The Preliminaries . . . ..,, Sometimes the preliminaries are almost as fun as the real thing: such is the case with Little 500. The week before was filled with more fun than ever this year, when activities packed almost everyday: you could take your pick from a burrito-eating, pie-eating, 0r pyramid building contest, Mini 500, tug-oiwar, orflyclerama Sing, Lambda Chi-Kappa captured the spirit award for 19, with ATO-PiPhi running a close second, but they weren,t the only ones with spirit: the pictures tell the real story. . . . and More Q. But when the sun began to shine, the Seniors and their guests hauled chairs, flowers and podiums back to East College lawn, to graduate outside. 50 51 Opel Addresses Class of a7 9 .. i! .?5 ;$; . John Roberts Opel, president of IBM Corporation, addressed the Class of 1979 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Redeemed miraculously after the mornings downpour, the day was a perfect one for an outdoor graduation. Everyone agreed that the seniors had good reason for moving to the lawn h the weather made the day even more special. 53 THE ARTS The DePauw Little Theater, presenting Dracula, N0 Exit, Absurd Person Singular, Our Town and Opera Theatre7s Marriage ofFigaro, gave us a well-rounded season. There was something for everyone: suspense. torment, comedy, nostalgia and music. Because of the help from the business staff, who kept the little thing? running smoothly, the season was a success. For the seniors involved with theatre from their freshman year, the newa-named Moore Hall is quite different from the fondly remembered Speech Hall. Although the building is gone, the spirit of the 01d theatre lives on and grows in the Performing Arts Center. t.-. mm ll Duzer Du7s production of When You 60min, Back, Red Ryder? brought suspense, violence, and fear to the DePauw stage. With direction from Mark Fowler, the cast made light of the antagonism of the sixties. This company worked as an ensemble through rehearsals and in performances. The set, designed by Toby Williams, brought to life a diner in New Mexico. The persons working in this diner were terrorized and made to see facets of their personality that no man in any era would enjoy discovering. The cast included Chris Rudy, Linda Duncan, Beth Wolfe, Dennis Ellis, Sach, Pat Cauley, and Debbie Haerr. e8. ,... Va J e . NLka :11; Our Town by Thornton Wilder is one of the most produced plays in the amateur theatre repertoire, and rightfully so. The play gives both the actor and the audience a chance to live in a simpler time and place for a few short hours, and to relive those moments that make us remember the past so dearly. Absurd Person Singular by Alan Ayckbourn is an import from the British Isles. The dry English wit and humor give us a chance to see how the rest of the world looks at life and, as wellghow to get ahead. 59 The DePauw Repertory Company and Duzvr Du prv- sented for their final show an unforgettable produvtion of the award-winning and controversial play Equus by Peter Shaffer. The play, starring Mark Fowler as the psychiatrist and Chris Rudy as Alan Strang, studiod the psyvhologiral problems of a young man who worships horsvs as ,his g0d.77 Equus traces the psychiatrists discovery of the b0y7s illness, concentraling 0n the Character-s reavtions t0 Stranghs behavior. Directed by Fred Nelson, Equus was presented in Meharry Hall, and its atmosphere gave an added mysteri- ous effect to the play. Audiences flocked to the five per- formances 0f Equus and were treated to a new and unu- sual production at DePauw. 62 PAC attracts top performers The Performing Arts Center welcomed many tal- ented guests to DePauw through the second annual Per- forming Arts Series and the seventeenth annual Festival Of Twentieth Century Music. New to the Performing Arts Series this year was the programming of two dance troupes: Lotte Goslaras Panto- mime Circus in September and the Luis .Riveria Spanish Dance Company in April. While in residence at DePauw each company gave formal performances, master classes, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and childrenis per- formances. The other six PAS performances this season included chamber music by fourteen Italian musicians of the Virtuosi di Roma, early jazz music by the Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra, vocal chamber music by the Empire Brass Quintet, violin music by Ruggiero Ricci, and the varied repertoire of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Featured in the Contemporary Music Festival was Czechoslovakian born Vaclav Nelhybel. In addition to holding discussions and lectures with music students, he conducted the DePauw Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and Concert Choir in a variety of his pieces in two concerts during the April festival. Dynamic would be an appropriate word to describe Mr. Nelhybel, for he was an explosive conductor who after each performance received thunderous applause. Clockwise from Left Lotte Goslar Circus Luis Rivera Company. Empire Brass Quintet, Virtuosi di Roma, Lone Coslarvs Circus. 63 Performances Highlighting the year were two major performances by the University Symphony Orchestra, the University Concert Choir, and the Festival Chorus. The Christmas convocation included two hundred and forty people performing Wagneris Tannhiiuserii and Poulencis Gloriai, conducted by Stanley Irwin with soloist Alice Hopper. The grou ps met again in May to perform Brahms Requiem conducted by Orcenith Smith with soloists Hopper and Irwin. The University Symphony Orchestra performed varied repertoire including Straussis Death and Transfiguration and Respighiis Pines of Rome . During Winter Term, the DePauw Chamber Symphony toured Ohio, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland. and New York, playing nine concerts in nine days. The University Concert Choir toured during spring break. Their itinerary stretched from various churches in Ohio to the John F. Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The Century singers were active with the Monon Bell Concert with the Wabash Glee Club, the Elizabethan Dinner, and a special concert in Indianapolis for university presidents. The University Bands started off the year with four home football halftime shows and a trip to Wabash. With the Poms, they performed such pieces as Night Fever and the theme from the Tonight Show.w In addition to concerts throughout the year, the band and wind ensembles performed on parents, weekends and played a concert in the park. The University Band and Choir combined in the premier performance of From the Navajo Childrenii by Dr. White. Both groups concluded the musical season with Commencement in May. DPUis victo- ries included a 1-0 win over Ball State, last yearis state champions, but the next game was dropped to Washington 1-0. The season ended with a 3-2 overtime clincher over Wabash on November 4, giving the soccer team a record of 9-4-1. This record, similar to last yearis record of 9-3-1, was not good enough to send us todhe playoffs. Summer vacation has once more come to an end as the Alpha Chi house opens for another year at DPU. This was a special year at Alpha Chi. Maybe the actives practiced the rush skits a little bit harder, sang a little bit louder, lay out on the sun deck a little longer or just had that extra spirit necessary for a great rush, allowing the house to take 35 pledges. That spirit was alive again during powder puff football as the Baby Bruisers went to the championship play-offs only to get beat by Bishop-Roberts Hall in a tense overtime. Besides powder puff, the house enjoyed participating in I.M. volleyball. basketball. swimming, tennis, and softball. They also had a great bike team for Little 500. Things were hectic on the days of Alpha Chi house dances. Cries of a Therels no more hot water? Who has an extra pair of stockings? and NWho blew the fuse? echoed through the halls as all 57 girls tried to get ready at once. The fall housedance was held at Inn of the. Four Winds in Bloomington. The spring housedance was at the Indianapolis International Airport Hilton. The house also had a sweetheart banquet in February and elected a Chapter sweetheart. Alpha Chi7s worked hard to make the house something they could be proud of. Among the actives were several highly talented artists, actresses, Cheerleaders, members of Mortar Board, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and even their very own 500 Festival Princess. '11.an FIUFIIY : 160 J 1 WE Alpha Tau Omega The highlight for the ATOls this year was the addition of a new dining room, TV lounge, sundeck, and a sauna to the Club Omegall. This increased our lounging, entertaining, and recreation room. The physical construction was only an outward expression of our fraternityls strength. Many of our freshmen received scholastic honors on campus, while five sen'ior's became a part of either Gold Key or Mortar Board. Again we had our share of Phi Beta Kappas. This year ATO was represented on DePauwls football, basketball, soccer, swimming, cross-country, track, and baseball teams. Intramurally, our football team gave us a lot of fun and pride. Our pledge class won the annual Pumpkin Pie Race in the fall. We also had campus leaders: President of UB Board, President of Campus Crusade for Christ, Vice-President of F reshman Board, Captain of the cross-country team, several actors, as well as members in Student Senate and Academic Council. The new addition gave us the best place on campus for dancing and partying. Social activities included not only keggers, but Peer Pressure Parties, sorority dinner exchanges, and our annual Christmas Dance held at the house. The State Day Dance at the Hyatt-Regency in Indy was a super time. We paired with Pi Phi for needed clean-up work at the Bedford Christian Camp, while our freshmen also threw a Halloween Party for the handicapped. It was a very strong year for ATO. navy- 5- ;Ma-iieu : r Acker, Philip Andersen, James Barnes, Douglas Bolinger, William Boyd, Mark Bradley, Mark Cavanaugh, Tim Daugherty, Byron Ditsler, Mark Dudley, Mike Dwenger, Randy Elliott, Richard Emerson, Mark Ferrini, Perry Fields, Robert F unk, James Coeke, John Grasso, F rank Hanna.
