Another year what can you say? Its pretty hard to capture the real sense of DePauw and all the events that shaped this year in a few words. Sure, there were all the Days, tMomts, Dad's, Old Gold, eth, graduation, Little 500, plays, sports and the concerts. But what made these events all the days of the '76-'77 year different, were the people. They say that a picture'tells a thousands words . . . here are a couple million words that tell how DePauw was this year. On the long beautiful ride through Wisconsin, you discover peo- ple who have an interest in common with yours; whether they are incoming freshmen or graduated seniors, col- lege professors or student instructors. Friendships sprout up fast and before you know it everyone is telling stories about past wilderness experiences, or expressing fears about this new aspect of life. You stop for the night at Jim Gammon's cabin in North- ern Wisconsin. Some people try their hand at pitching tents, others get a fishing lesson on the little lake and Kit Bridges fixes a wonderful ore-pot meal of some sort, while other people go into the woods to find the well. Up and on the road again, you pass by steel- blue Lake Superior and you understand why it was given that name. It is not long before you reach the Land-O-Lakes in Minne- sota. The rest of the day is spent learning about the canoe e how to paddle it, steer it, carry it and Hrescue it. You also learn about the area from the geographical details tsome of the oldest rocks in the world outcrop herey and the historical highlights, from the fur traders and voyageurs up through the lumbering industry. Wolf . . . DePauw's Wilderness Program The trip itself actually starts after more lessons on pack- ing for the trial, what kind of food to take, how to keep it away from the bears and other safety points. Finally the canoes depart; 2 to a canoe, 3 canoes to a party. That first night out is a reflective one e some people think about bears, or the vastness of the wilderness sur- rounding them, but everyone feels good about their abili- ty to contribute to the group and you begin to feel at one with your new environment. At some time or another during the trip, you will feel the vulnerability that comes with being in the wilderness. Facing the elements together with the group strengthens you as well as the group itself e independent, yet depen- dent in a new way. It is a trip for green-horns and Eagle Scouts alike. To- wards the end of the trip your canoe feels like it is being powered by the unspoiled beauty that surrounds it and you realize what a perfect world you have found in the North Woods. You know that you will miss the cry of the loon, the howl of the wolf and the mystical foggy breeze that blows in off the water each morning that reminds you of the utter vastness there. e Kris Brant l 43 Q mi. Alpha Gam is a fun place to live. The 76-77 year has been an exciting year. We have been active in various campus as well as individual house activities. Activities such as rowdy nights or dress-up nights for dinner gave us the opportunity to sing, relax and have fun at dinner. Popcorn and pizza parties are good study breaks at Alpha Gam. a In the fall, we had a Halloween party with TKE at Wabash; a good time for all with bobbing for apples and a treasure hunt. In November, we held our spaghetti dinner to raise money for our altruistic project e cleft palate research. Everyone pitched in and worked hard for the worthy cause. A Christmas party in December with the pledges and the actives added to the fes- tive mood of the season. Gifts, stockings and a beautifglly decorated tree made the occasion axgood, happy time for all. The fall house dance was a dinner-theater at the Black Curtain in Indianapolis. The spring dance was at the house with the theme, 7A Lovely Night. International Reunion Day of ETA chapter of Alpha Gam was in the spring with the Grand President Dorothy Skinner as speaker. Besides house activities, Alpha Gam is ac- tive in the HLittle 500 festivities and par- iticipated in the homecoming and Old Gold Day events. 13S 136 ALPHA OMICRON PI ROW 1: Karen Martin, Julie Tucker, Genny Dolan, Janet Allen, Martha Johnson, Susan MacDougall, Tara Hanley, Brenda Pierce. After Just a few weeks on campus we took the greatest pledge class ever. This group of girls have added a lot of fun to the old Delta Gamma house. The DG's sponsered a beatifui eyes contest. This was a campus wide event in which all living units participated. Each living unit submitted a pair of eyes which they thought were the most beatifui on campus. Votes were cast in the Union lobby. It was a lot of fun and helped us raise money for our philanthropic project, which is aid to the blind. Our Powder Puff football team won 2nd place in the tournament. The girls had a great time playing in all the games. The DG's have also been reading weekly to people in the old folks homes. This has been an activity which the girls and the mem- bers of the homes have thoroughly enjoyed. Our annual Holiy House bazaar at Christmas time was a big success. Each girl contributed five items which she made and these were sold at the bazaar. Our local alums also helped with the event. Mom's and Dads weekends are always special at Delta Gamma. We have a special show prepared for our parents on these days which make it special for them. This Spring the DGis again took a fantastic pledge class. All in all, DG has had a fantastic year. The Delta Gamma house is always working on new and different projects which are always a lot of fun for all. With Ernie gone tbut not for- gottem a power struggle ensued in an attempt to determine whether the DKE house would change its moral and philosophical drift from the serious academic attitude which Ernie epito- mized. First semester saw the second floor hard guys nail the third floor burnouts. A major attack was planned to invade the addition, but was broken up by some nasty room preferencing. First semester had these rumors spread: the Music School had moved E into the DKE living room, the dramatic arts at DePauw was subsidizing all DKE parties, a little sister program had been started, and Champ had mellowed. iThree out of four ain't badD All this means is that no one knows what really happens at the Castle on the Hill until they visit. For only at 620 E. Many reasons were cited by the pledges for coming to Delt, the most popular being ... HSince Ronald McDonald was a Belt, I want to be one, too! During the fall semester, the Delts participated in many activities, both on and off campus. The Deits held their annual Powderpuff Football Tournament between womenis living units from October 1-9 on the Belt front lawn. The competition was extremely fierce, and Thgta won for the second consecutive year defeating Alpha Chi in the championship games. On October 24-25, the Delts participated in a work project with Tri-Delt at Camp Moneto in beautiful Brown County, Indiana. Everyone was in good spirits tand filled with them, tooD throughout the weekend, and all felt a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment after the renovation of the camp was complete. The highlight of the spring semester was the initiation of 25 pledges into the active chapter. During the week prior to initiation, the actives guided the pledges through Hinspiration week tDePauw fraternities do not have Hhell weekU. The pledges performed various duties throughout the week, and became muscle bound as a result. To show off their newly formed muscles, the pledges made their now famous Hboulder run on Thursday night, February LO. Approximately 45 freshman-coeds were in attendence at the East College boulder that night thow they knew about the Hrun remains a mystery; and they watched in amazement as the Belt pledges, led by Matt Holliday, streaked by. We race our cars and motorcycles around the parking lot and then go to Greencastle High School for defensive driving clinics. We assassinate pigeons that walk on our roof. They then followed an afternoon with the annual Watermellon Folk-Rhine 81 Watermellon Festival. This involved a couple of Blue Grass bands with the Fall City Ramblers doing a square dance that evening for everyone. The next big social event for the Chops was the house dance at the Indianapolis Airport Hilton. The dance was combined with Alpha Chi Omega and a good time was had by all. Formal Meals with various faculty members throughout the year and a large turnout for Dad's Day topped off a good, strong first semester for the Lambda Chils. Looking forward to an even better second semes'er, the Little 500 team is already practicing, following a fifth phce finish last year with only three riders participating. The house will also be looking for its sixth straight spirit trophy. The Chops big project this spring will be their first Annual Bike- A-Thon. This fund raising project for the American Cancer Society will involve other Lambda Chi chapters from Purdii'e, Wabash and Butler. Fiji: A Year in Review Coming back to school this year has brought a new meaning to being 3 Fiji. To start it out our I.M. football team came from nowhere to win the championship. This started things rolling in the house, we completely .. reorganized our internal structure and strengthened our financial position. Helping to rebuild our house were 26 pledges that we took; they were the major motivating force behind the renovation. After stabilizing the internal problems of the fraternity we looked to help the community, working with Delta Gamma we rebuilt an old torn-up house so that some senior citizens could live in it. This project was sponsered by the C.L.U.C. and was said to be the largest project undertaken by a fraternity this semester. To sum up the year, so far it has been productive and we hope to keep up the good work. 151 Phi Kappa Psi 152 Pi Beta Phi A house for a moment, A memory for tomorrow, A meaning for life. They enjoyed striving for the highest GPA of any chapter in the state. In politics, Rob Lukemeyer was elected Student Body President. In KTK, SAE had members holding the offices of Vice-President and Treasurer. In athletics, SAE spiked their way to 3rd place in volleyball. In traffic violations, they had over five court cases. In traffic wrecks, they had four with one total. In entertainment, half of the house was placed on social probation for watching a Jerry Lewis movie in their parking lot. SAE is looking forward to an eventful next year and glad everyone lived thru the last one. r Sigma Chi Sigma Chi, what is it? It is experiences, and the Sigs have had enough experiences this year to last a lifetime. With twenty-six brand-new pledges, the house took on an en- tirely different look. New faces, new friends. These faces all combined to accomplish many goals throughout the year. In academics, the Sigs again strove for excellence with their sophomore class being one of the highest on campus. in intramurals, theSigs fought to defend the AllSports IM Trophy won last year. In campus activities, they were represented on WGRE radio, THE DePAUW, Freshman Student Advisors, Gold Key, Varsity football, soccer, cross country, swimming, basketball .. . the list goes on and on. In public relations, theSigs held three CLUC projects, gave a Halloween Party for under- privileged children of the Allison Orphanage, built a play- ground for the children of Greencastle, and raised over $2000.00 for charity through Work Week and Sigma Chi Derby Day. But these accomplishments are not Sigma Chi; the men are. Teammates, roommates, friends, Brothers. It has to be experienced to be believed. When one looks back over four years of living at B.R., there are many interesting memories. A few will remember Jim Powell's H200 , and Bart Simpson's ex- ploits on the battle field. Others of course, will remember the streaking ma- nia, the raid on room 222, Don Mumma for HDog Catcherll, and AAAS defeating Beta. Even more will remember the 1976 bike team. And how could anyone forget the fires, cold showers, false alarms, freezing rooms, the Hlunchroom brawl , THE HGPA , and Eloise, with that now imri'ior- tal line, llYou wan, tots? ; But the one memory that lld like to forget was the silent discrimination 2 it hung over our head for four years. The building is used entirely by the Art Department and is very well equipped, having ample space for displays, labora- tories, and lectures, including an auditorium, as well as painting studios. Be- cause of the quality, dedication and enthusiasm of the staff, DePauw has attracted students from all over the country to their Art Department. w HThe Botany and Bacteriology department had increased en- rollment in beginning and advanced courses this year. New innovations were made in the teaching of evolution, and addi- tional greenhquse experience was provided in the beginning botany course. We anticipate additional interest in plants in future years. Robert I. Fletcher We Preston Adams bacteriology botany and Howard R. Youse g 13 189 chemistry Howard B. Burkett John W. It is believed that this program fosters in a significant way the appreciation of humanistic values and a feeling of the continuity of Western civilization. Courses in the Department may especially benefit the increasing number of DePauw students who spend a semester or more abroad. Brandt N. Among the many facets of the teacher training program at DePauw, students gain experience and skill development in teaching techniques through video-taped teaching activities. These activities along with departmental course work and student teaching in the local public schools help.make DePauw teacher education graduates successful teachers. A Ned B. A major concern has been a reconsideration of the Freshman writing program and the requirements for English majors in literature and in writing. Robert P. Sedlack Fred N. German and Russian studies also provide incentives for travel abroad and qualifications for a range of occupations. Darryl E. Professor Cooper took a special leave in England to be replaced by Dr. Paul Meyer, a 'young historian who introduced classes in his speciality of pre- Civil War America.
