Hey, look at what I found 'iW hat is it? The yearbook from my senior year in col- lege. Good old DePauw, huh? Right. Must be ... let's see . . . about seventeen years since I graduated. Well, let's look through it. Whois that? The President of the University. It looks like his orientation speech. You mean for the fresh men? Yeah, the very first day you're there. Did you go to it? Yes, It was the last time I ever saw him. The President? After seventeen years it should be interesting. Right. I heard a lot about him but he hardly ever came out in- to the public. He was pro- bably busy running the school. . nWhat Building is this? East College. ; The oldest building on campus. That's where they kept the Language depart- ments. Hey, why's it got banners hung on it? Where? Oh, it must be Old Gold weekend in the picture. All the alums used to come for the football game. It's a beautiful old building.l hope they haven't torn it down since then. I hope so too. lremember that it was the scene of many a college rite. Like what? l'Oh, they used to say that with the first snow all freshmen fraterr'tity pledges had to run naked around the Boulder that was beside the pathyway in this picture. What about the girls? They didnit have to. But there was this big bell in the tower of this same build- ing that they used to ring late at night. Th en the Sigma Chis would chase them. impressive! Where's this? Inside East College. Meharry Hall. What I if the Sigma Chis caught them? They cut off some of their hair. i re- l member that in the Sigma Chi basement all this hair was hanging on the wall. What a beautiful old building. 1 do hope they haven't torn it down. A marching band! That dates you. And the U-Shop. That building burnt down in the fall of my senior year. There was an all-night bakery there too. It was a shock to see it go. That's a shame. What's the big building in back? The Science Center. Brand new then. it looks a little out of place. Sort of. A cheerleader. I wonder if they still have them? Probably. Lots of crowd appeal. Guess so. That's the owl. Where is it? Right below East College. They must have taken this picture from inside the building. Does the owl mean anything. What? Like the Boulder. Oh, they used to say if a girl who was a virgin walked by it it would hoot. What about boy virgins? I don't know. Here's a football game for you. Did you ever go? Sometimes. For the big games. Would you be in this picture? I don't know. ' I don't see you anywhere, but I really don't knowwhat you looked like then. Oh, about the same. Balding? Haw haw. What'S'that guy doing? Throwing a watermelon. What for? The Lambda Chi Alpha Watermelon Bust. Another tradition? Yes - they have contest and choose the Watermelon Bust Queen. Really? Do they throw the watermelons at her? Very funny? Here's somebo'dy's poor idea of a joke about them. About who? The freshwomen. What about the owl? The owl - oh, I guess that's a wishfuI-thinking tradition. So is virginity traditional or not? I dontt know.DePauw is funny that way. I never figured it out exactly. Who are all these guys? They look like athletes. I don't remember any of them. You're right, tho ugh, they do look like athletes. Yes, as though they're used to having their pic- tures taken. You know what they're doing? W hat? Sitting on the Union Building steps looking at the fresh men women. They certainly are in- tent. 'This is the first picture of anyone studying that I've seen. Oh, we did that a lot, too. When I went to school that was ALL we did. An all-girl's school, what else? What do you mean what else? What else is there to do? There was an army base in town. So you ran around with soldiers and lstudied my brains out. You probably froze them running around the Boulder. Ah, graduation. You must have seen the President again then? I wasn't in the ceremony. I didn't know that. Why not? Oh, just general reasons. Hot robes and speeches. Is that all? Well, perhaps I was a little rebellious. For me, just the ceremony didn't make any difference. A country road. A country run. The road of life? I suppose so. Yearbooks always have to have a road of life picture, don't they? Seems that way. What is it that they're trying to do, do you think? Oh, just make people remember a little of what they used to be, I suppose. Maybe. Do you have an old college yearbook? Oh, buried somewhere. Well, dig it out. Sun shining, music playing and seeds flying, the day's events got underway. One of the first events was the seed spitting contest. Mike Thompson, ATO; and Shanna Underwood, Lucy Rowland, spat their way to victory. Mike Thompson also won the watermelon eating contest. Other events included: the greased watermelon relay, won by the Lambda Chi team; the watermelon toss, won by the Sigma Chi team; and the seed guessing contest, won by Charlann Sandberg, Alpha Chi. The day ended with the crowning of the new Miss Watermelon Bust, Janet Hayes, Mason; only to begin the night's festivities - the Lambda Chi dance with the All Star Frogs. left page: contestants were Susie Brown iupper righti, Kathy Haynes ilower righti, Dave Oliver Oower lefti and Dick Johnson tmiddle Iefti. right page: other participants included Elizabeth Davies iupper righti, Thierry Wil- brandt tabovei and Mike Thompson ilower Iefti. OLD GOLD DAY The campus echoed with the sounds of laughter with memories and tears, as once again DePauw witnessed the arrival of Old Gold Day. The day's events commenced with the appearance of a guest speaker, Dr. Henry Commager. And as the morning vanished into afternoon alums as well as students an- xiously made their way to the football field. ' The kick-off . . . the release of yellow balloons signaled DePauw's first touchdown. At half-time Joyce Taglauer was crowned homecoming queen. Even though DePauw lost to Butler there was the even- ing's entertainment to look forward to. The problems all were attributed to the new Roadmaster bikes picked for use in the little 5. With its lighter frame, longer pedal length, and thinner tires, it posed many problems for the riders. In qualifications several contenders were inju red; and the first lap of the race saw Kirk Edwards, DU, break his collar bone. The race was delayed for forty five minutes so that both teams could make repairs to both man and machine. The race was then restarted and quickly the SNu, Phi Psi battle began with the SNus jumping to a .6 second lead. By the sixty-third lap both teams had lapped the rest of the field. The turning point in the duel came when Phi Psi was penalized ten seconds on the one hundredth lap. Led by Parke Brewer, Bob Emmert, Ken Hitchner, and Robin Hendry the SNus finished first with a time of 1:46.50. The Phi Psis crossed the finish line only sixty-eight sec- onds behind; and the Sigma Chis brought up the third position 4:32 behind the SNus. 220 .
