'V Vienna Queen of the Danube, the Imperial City and the progenitor of Romanticism efrom the lofty spires of her Gothic cathedrals to the golden splen- dour of her Baroque palaces, she is a living testi- monial to the fusion of the mind heart and soul of mankind , A , THE CONTEMPORARY EASTERN EUROPEAN SEMESTER Vienna is the most Eastern European city out- side the Iron Curtain countries. This unique location affords DePauw students the splen- dors of modern Vienna as well as one of the few known opportunities to study in a city be- hind the Iron Curtain, namely in Budapest. Side trips to Warsaw, Cracow, and traveling through Czechoslovakia also gives our stu- dents a view of Eastern Europe not obtainable through textbooks or planned tours. One only needs to talk with a returning East European Semester student to catch a glimmer of the impact of this unique international program. Dr. Marvin C. Last Spring 10 of their members com- muted twice weekly to Indianapolis for an 80 hour course in emergency victim care. As a result of this training, the 10 are now certified as Registered Emergency Techni- cians. This past Spring, 2 of the members coordinated a similar program which met at the Union Building for 12 new students and 6 local persons. Their projected goal is to assume the role of primary care for the acutely sick and injured in the Greencastle area through the use of a mobile intensive care unit. 86 -, mm: 1...? A ow From the Editor To the Student Body; Rather than the usual observations on DePauw's school year by the editor, I thought I would comment on the book. lt-has been our aim, as a staff, to revitalize the concept of a yearbook on DePauw's campus. 1 hope that its picture, rather than essay approach has appealed to you. We have covered as much as our limited staff and budget has permitted us to. I feel that we have done a rather thorough job of covering the 1974 year. Obviously this is not a book without flaws; but I feel it comes closer than any of the past few years. If there is something which you feel is deficient about the book, rather than not support next year's book, I would like to ask you to submit your suggestions to the Pub. building so that next year's book may benefit from your criticism. I feel that a yearbook is the most valuable means of preserving the events of a school year and sincerely hope the MIRAGE does not die. Finally, I would like to offer thanks to those on my staff who stayed with the book and made it what it is. I deeply appreciate their help. Also special thanks to Dr. Cass, for his invaluable help in photographing the faculty; and to Mr. Aikman, for his pictures, records, and patience. I hope that you have found the 1974 Mirage an improvement over past books. Sincerely, Gary Roberts Editor of 1974 Mirage 239
