Young Republicans With the political fervor running high in this national election year, the Young Re- publicans became one of the strongest organizations on campus with a member- ship of over 150 students. After attending a political rally for Richard Nixon in Indian- apolis students got together and organized the club. The members campaigned for state and local candidates as well as their presidential nominee. They supported visits of state office candidates to the campus and went door to door seeking votes for Republican office-seekers. The club did not disband after the November elections, but continued to function in anticipation of the National College Republicans Convention held duringspring break. Student Interest Groups 19

Young Democrats 1968 was the year for student participation in the Democratic Party, and the Young Democrats did their share to bring the major elec- tion issues to the DePauw campus. Although Robert Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy were first choice among young people this year, the Young Democrats held the party line and supported Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie vigorously: It has been the Democrats who have placed the real emphasis on youth in 1968, and we feel that in the years after 1968 the influence that youth first made with the Democrats will stay and grow. The accomplish- ments of the Democratic Party will continue, and because of it politics will never be the same. It's time for the obsolete attitudes and standards of the past to be replaced, and politically they will be replaced by young people and the Democratic Party. True, 1968 was a Republican Year, but the Young Democrats were a major political interest group on the DePauw campus.

Investment League DePauwis financial whizzes, the Invest- ment League, tried again this year to show a profit on investments with differing de grees of success. After several group meetings the league decided to sell some of its existing portfolio and also to buy several new issues, some of them blue chips and others highly speculative. The league also sponsored a stock sale for interested students, with the league ab- sorbing all brokerage fees. Debate Team The Debate Team this year wound up with an outstanding record, the best in twenty- nine years, to be exact. The question this year was, Resolved: that executive con- trol of U.S. foreign policy should be sig- nificantly curtailed. In only four weeks the team entered three major meets and came home with two firsts and a second. Dennis Kendig won two top speaker awards in the series, and Phil Heyde took one in the U of I meet.
