Tests and more tests. ttIs this what college is really like? First Days Amidst the frenzy of overloaded cars, eager luggage carriers, shutter-happy photographers, and helpful dormstafTers, 750 confused fresh- man arrived at DePauw last Sept. 5. With an East College welcome by President Kerstetter and an orientation convocation later on with Dean Riggs, freshmen were presented DePauw requirements for academic performance and general behavior. OtstaHers were an additional help as they explained to their respective groups the upcoming schedule of events. Con- quion reigned in Bowman Gym as headquarters we're set up for four days of placement tests and registration. Rushing and Pledging With a shortened orientation week this year, DePauwts Greek system also saw a change. Fraternity pledging found most men established in their respective houses by the weekend of Sept. 11, while womenis rush continued through Oct. 1. For those students preferring in- dependent living Bishop Roberts, Longden, and Mason residence halls were available. When registration was completed, freshmen and up- perclassmen alike scrambled to the Book Store to purchase books and supplies in preparation for the first day of classes. With classes be- ginning on Friday, Sept. 10, this year, students had to settle down to the studying routine earlier than usual. As orientation week drew to close, a new and exciting year began for DePauw. DU pledge Jim Evans zeros in with a grin at the Alpha Chi kiss-in. AG The Alpha Phits do their best to make another group of anxious rushees feel at home. 31
