Old traditions appeared again . . . as freshmen asserted their independence They may have come to DePauw green and wet behind the ears; however, it does not take the freshmen frogies long to rebel against their lowly social status. Pot-burning is one of the First Visible signs of rebellion. Under the con trol ofthe administration and the security officers, Who have to make sure East College does not go down in this blaze of glory, the freshmen pledges gather together on East College lawn to burn their green beanies and show the campus they are not so raw. 26 ALL OVER BUT THE SHOUTINGe Pledges have 400 admiring eyes feasting on their brand new hats as they serenade the Quad. MATCH, ANYONEP-Rebellious freshmen prepare to liberate themselves from the bonds ofgreen beanies.

IV V New protests . .. . assembled at East College i K BUT NOT THE END A-Marchers gather on East Col- lege laWn for a speech from Dr. Petrek. 27 - xv: 4 mtgt-t THE BEGINNINGistudcnts assemble at Blackstock Stadium for a non-violent protest march. In the midst of widespread national concern over the civil rights issue, DePauw students staged a demonstra- tion to protest the Birmingham bombing. Faculty members and students marched from Blackstock to the East College lawn, Where the group assembled to express their concern about the controversial matter. The entire event was negligible in tangible results, but the mere demonstration of interest was encouraging.
