The principal distinguishing marks of the University are its Catholic, Vincentian, and urban character. The faculty, learned yet learning, give substance to the mission of the University. These men and women personify the intrinsic value of scholarly inquiry and the force of inteiiectual efforts Through their dedication to learning, their contributions to personalistic environment, and their faith In the potential of their students the faculty and staff serve as role modeis for students. By reason of its Catholic character, DePaui strives to bring the light of Catholic faith and the treasure of knowiedge into a mutually challenging and supportive relationship. It accepts as its corporate responsibility to remain faithful to the Catholic message drawn from authentic religious sources both traditional and contemporary. On the personal level the religious purposes of the University are embodied In the special values it places on codes of conduct which emphasize personal responsibility and dignity the conduct of students, faculty, and staff. DePauI respects the religiously pluralistic cemposition of its members and endorses the interplay of diverse value systems beneficiai to inteliectual inquiry and understanding in a pluralistic society. Academic freedom is guaranteed both as an integral part of the Universityis schotarly and religious heritage, and as an essential condition of effective inquiry and instruction. As an urban University, DePaui draws heavily on the cultural and professional richness of the Chicago area in its academic and extra-curricular programs. In turn the University enriches the area through the highly varied competencies it develops' m its graduates who become productive members of this society, and by the leadership it exercises in various professions, performing arts, and civic endeavors. The University encourages innovation to meet new challenges that fall within the mission of the University. Rev. J.T. Richardson, C.M. i1? DePOUI L - A k - Tree of Knowledge The symbol is the sum total of the combined lower case letter forms at, p, and u, and the embodyment of the guiding principles comprising the esSence of the university. Viewing the symboi as a u'nit, one sees a tree form resting firmiy on the ground with its square base and raised limbs in symmetricai form. Our ittreei of knowiedgeithas age and fullness in its trunk and limbs, suggesting tradition; and youth and simplicity in its internal negative Spaces holding the symmetricai leaf forms suggestive of sapling growth. Central to the symbol, as in the university, is the human form, with arms uplifted and outstretched to meet'and receive the environment. The figure is standing erect and balanced suggesting a strength in knowledge and values. The figure is also a modified cruciform e an intentionai link to the Catholic roots of the university. The uii form extending upward from the trunk is a true arc, a section of a perfect circle. its position related to the figure represents supportrather than containment of human form. This position of support is the image of the university in support of the enrichment of the community and the pursuit of knowledge with a concern for values and human spirit. Accompanying this symbol is a specially designed logotype for DePaul University. This modified and simplified typography serves as an identifying companion to the symbol. While complementing the symbols expressiveness the logotype reinforces that which is the essence of DePaul University.
