A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Since the year'l974, this country has lived through the most extraordinary political, economic and social events in our history. For many of us it was both a national experience and a personal one. We went through things we had never gone through before and had never imagined we would go through. We struggled with questions that had never previously occured to us and with anxieties that would have been impossible to an- ticipate. Major events took place that we had never believed could happen in such a brief period. Even now, looking back, we have some difficulty believing that it happened, that it was real. This sense of unreality will probably grow with the passage of time. We will begin to forget what going through the decade of the 197095 was really like when we were in it. Historians will tend to make the story tidier and drain it of its feeling, and its ending will seem more clearly inevitable than it was. Julio Padilla Chairman, Editor-in-Chief Compendium 1978 16
