For many of us it was both a national experience and a personal one. We went through things we had never gone through before and had never imagined we would go through. We struggled with questions that had never previously occured to us and with anxieties that would have been impossible to an- ticipate. Major events took place that we had never believed could happen in such a brief period. Even now, looking back, we have some difficulty believing that it happened, that it was real. This sense of unreality will probably grow with the passage of time. We will begin to forget what going through the decade of the 197095 was really like when we were in it. Historians will tend to make the story tidier and drain it of its feeling, and its ending will seem more clearly inevitable than it was. Julio Padilla Chairman, Editor-in-Chief Compendium 1978 16 In 1975 the United States began its adjust- ment to a world where events seemed to out- run our capacity to absorb them. While Rocke- feller began investigations into the misdeeds of the CIA and Ford announced the U.S. was in a recession, the Bicentennial celebrations officially began. In April, Vietnam again entered the news as the re- , maining U.S. personnel had to be evacuated from Saigon. Meanwhile, New York City was in the midst of financial crisis. The danger of aerosol sprays to the atmosphere, an assassination at- tempt on Ford, the UN declaration of t' Zionism as a form of racism, and the ' dictatorial emergency in India were other newsworthy .www E. morwaenrw ' . 4mm . .m mew n we ,.. ,e-ewbwgwngw waat;vn- a e America demonstrated its capacity to adapt in 1976. Old faces reappeared and new faces stepped fonlvard to provide new hopes. The Win- ter Olympics, Surveyor's Mars photos, the national political conventions and the election of Jimmy $ Carter dominated the news and TV screens. The U.S. t t: began to celebrate our 200th birthday. Marijuana was decriminalized in California, a new investi- gation of the Kennedy and King assassinations e was begun, and in Congress a new scandal began M: e as a result of Elizabeth Ray's revelations. Mean- t while, old faces made one last appearance as Eldridge Cleaver returned to the US. for trial, Mao died in China, and King Kong returned to New York in an oil tanker. ,A , W10 i-51a95;'w ;Nx4 Extremes in weather continued in '77. East- ern blizzards resulted in floods, natural gas . shortages and blackouts. Western drought bred a rampant fires and water rationing. Newa-elected President Carter faces such issues as energy con- servation, the Concorde, the B-1 bombertcruise mis- sile controversy, Panama Canal and Laetril debates. ldi Amin, Roots and black independence brought Africa into the news. To many, the deaths of Elvis and Groucho signaled the end of an era. Despite mass kidnappings, the KLMtPan Am crash, Washington imprisonments and gay rights tensions, hopes for the future appear- ed in movies like Star Wars, the Alaskan pipeline, the Space Shuttle and improved Cuban relations.
