is il The Very Rev. Comerford J. O'Malley, C.M,, S.T.D,, LL,D., ln September, l898, the Vincentian Fathers, in answer to a request made by Archbishop Feehan, opened St. Vincent's College, a college for men. Nine years later, in December, 1907, a new charter endowed the college with the status of a legally organized Corporation, making the school the first Catholic university in the State of Illinois, and the name was changed to De Paul University. At the Corporation's inception, a Board of Trustees was set up to control and manage all of its affairs, This Board of Trustees, under the direction of a chairman and with the advice of a Board of Lay Trustees, has as its duty the governing of the University by the establish- ment of laws which are commensurate with the charter granted it and those laws ordained by the State of Illinois and the Government of the United States, and to manage all University aFFairs, educational and fiscal. lt is the Board of Trustees which reviews and ratifies all applications for degree and diploma made to any school within the University.
