'vp J-H. - The year I939 will be marlred in the history of the University as the year of the death of the Chancellor of the University, George Cardinal Mundelein. ln over two decades of tenure of the office. Cardinal Mundelein showed himself a sympathetic friend and a sage counsellor to the affairs of the school. His was a broad vision of the need and the needs of education. The progress of the Catholic School System under his guidance was little short of phenomenal. As an instance, he lived to see De Paul rise in twenty odd years from a small institution of less than three hundred students to its present size of over six thousand. His contribution of wisdom, advice, and sound progressivism was a large factor in that growth. ln l94O, Chicago will welcome the new head ofthe Archdiocese of Chicago, Archbishop Samuel A. Stritch. ln his varied career, Archbishop Stritch has given proof of his abilities as an administrator and a spiritual leader. Particularly pleasing to us professionally is his lreen interest in education as manifested in his latest post as Archbishop of Milwaukee. De Paul University joins all Chicago in welcoming him as the head of the Archdiocese and our spiritual father. The officers of the University feel confident that his counsel will always be available, his understanding broad and sympathetic, and that under his guidance as Chancellor that the University will advance to new heights of achievement.
