This is a primary goal of all the training afforded by De Paul. This main purpose is achieved by many means. all effective and xyorthwhile. The administration. the various studies. and all those who contribute to the education of the students have so successfully achieved this end that the graduates of 1955 and the years following are very well prepared. both physically, mentally. and most impor- tant-spiritually. to defend the world against the enemies of Christ. In these times of bitterness and material- ism, this preparation is of prime importance. De Paul Academy truly fulhlls its purpose of training students for this important job. He is the Very Reverend Comerford O'Malley. CM.. STD.. President of De Paul for the past nine years. During his term of office. Father O'Malley has pushed forward a program of expansion and improvement. De Paul L'niversity has grown to be the largest Catholic University in the country and the Academy has surpassed all enrollment marks during Father O'Malley's presidency. The first quarter century of Father O'Malley's priestly life has been one of varied and vigilant service tothe Vincentian Community. To him, therefore. with best wishes for the future. this 1953 Academy yearbook is respectfully dedicated. I I I I Q REV COMERFORD OMALLEY C M S T D Pit llffellf rf Dc Pm! The excellent manifestation of mission spirit at De Paul was evident in the generous contributions during the scho lastic year of 52-55. The total collections for the first semester amounted to S1,211.40. It was clear at that time that the grand total would sur pass all previous records. The students of De Paul Academy are rated by the archdiocesan director as one of the chief sources of encouragement in mission work XVorking with two promoters from each class, the students responded to the growing needs of the missionaries at home and in every direction around the world. The students responded to the ap eal of the Vincentian missionaries in the same spirit. Close to two hundred sound films, many of them in color, have augmented practically every subject in each department. A room was provided for the use of professors showing films. Although Mr. Heing had charge of the ordering and scheduling of films, it would have been impossible for him to succeed without the assistance of about fifteen competent junior and Senior students who operated the projector and returned films to libraries and post ofiices. At these sessions various topics were discussed, some of which were, THE GIVING OF THE RIGHT TO VOTE TO EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OI.DS, and. THE GRANTING OF STATEHOOD TO HAWAII. Under the able direction of its new moder- ator, Father Casey. the MASQUE AND GAVEI. has had a splendid year in its various activities. IAQ Ronald Landon, President Edmund Habryll, Vice-President Donald Patrick, Secretary john Beal, Treasurer Father Munster, Moderator N LOOKING forward to its fourth year, the Railroad Club can well be proud of its success during the past three years. Since its founding in 1950, the club has forged ahead until now it numbers twenty-five students in its membership, and its aim, the preservation and encouragement of model railroading at De Paul Academy has been accomplished. Membership is open to all classes, including the freshmen. Included among the various activities of the club are movies supplied by different railroads, slides, and discussions about railroading. Many of the club's members are active in the national railroading clubs. The most important activity of the year, as far as the railroaders were concerned, was the field trip to Milwaukee to see the Milwaukee Road's new automatic hump yard. The railroaders turned out in force for this trip and all agreed it was one of the best field trips yet. In its plans for the future the Railroad Club plans a membership drive and another Open House, both designed to further the cause of model railroading. Seated: Marchini, Sobek, Beal, Habryl, Fr. The person directly responsible for the success was Mr. Robert Kuntz, who, during the past hye years, has come to be known for his excellence in choral direction. THE Stamp Club is the newest activity at De Paul. It was formed in the latter part of the 1951-1952 termg but because it was late in the year and the lack of membership the activities were limited. This year the Stamp Club reopened, and under the able leadership of Fr. Rechten the club has tripled its membership and has become a successful organization. One does not necessarily have to be an accom- plished philatelist to be a member. One of the main functions of the club is to help beginners in this popular hobby. At the meetings the members swap news and views on stamps, old and new. They maintain volumes of news articles on philately. These articles are brought in by the members and they in turn are given merits by the club. The member with the most points receives a jackpot contributed by his fellow members. The members also sell stamps to each other in the form of an auction. From this auction the club gets 25 per cent of the selling price of the stamps. This club has a promising future because of the great progress it has made in the short time it has been in operation. Although it was the poorest showing in many years, it could have been a good season with a few breaks during the St. George, and St. Philip games. Also the team was hampered by injuries, lack of depth. and too few big players. The football team this year will lose such seniors as: John Fanning, jerry Kohn. UNDER the very capable direction of Coach Tony Tracey, the freshman eleven ended their 1952 football season with two wins, no losses. and a tie. In the opening contest. the frosh Demons overpowered Weber's frosh, 14-O. as Longo and Callahan romped for touchdowns. Their next victim was St. Philip by a 19-6 margin, as Longo and Callahan again hit pay dirt, while Pawlak carried the other T.D. across. Their next contest, though, proved to be a bitter disappointment to the frosh squad. They out- played and out-hustled St. Georges frosh for four quarters. but all they could salvage for their great efforts was a 7-7 deadlock. After Longo ran 50 yards for a first quarter T.D., and the Dragon frosh pushed across a counter in the second period, the Demons Out-played the Dragons. A 34-yard T.D. by Longo was called back in the third quarter. as was a 40-yard Schweikerdt to Doles T.D. pass in the fourth period. The spirit and aggressiveness of the frosh gridders is something to look forward to, and should strengthen next year's Varsity squad. Outstanding backs were Longo, Schweikerdt. Pawlak. Callahan. Timqnc 1' and Horeis: while outstanding linemen were Sheehan, Kilbourne. Perna. Doles. Porto. McGahan and Kenny.
