In the Student Council, the desire of the stu- dent body to participate in the government of their school, is manifested. For in this organization, representatives of the student body make decisions concerning the welfare of the school. lt also main- tains the law and order which is so vital in running any school. This organization upholds the spir- itual, disciplinary, social, and athletic standards in our school. This year, under the capable guidance of Father Ryan, the organization carried out all these objectives. lt sponsored several athletic and social activities as well as improving the scholastic wel- fare in many respects. The very capable officers for this year were: John Smyth, president, Frank Cale, vice-president, Don Werdell, secretary, and Anthony Brancoto, treasurer. This year the membership was greatly increased by the admission of the presidents of the various clubs and activities in the school. Yes, again this year, the student council up- held its position as the most important student or- ganization in De Paul Academy and as the voice of the students in the government of the school Student ouncil By Jim Kilrox Page forty-one Page forty-two K' F1- yr Www llls ll' 'Bw ffm FW R 1fw'1fQw L-N is-ww 5 Us of J M J 44-. il I Row l: Hartmann, K., Heiden, W., Hemmer, R., Hoffman, D., Hoffman, W., Holmquist, G., Hutchings, D., lelfel, R., Igoe, R., lllarde, F. JOHN SMYTH President onogram Club The Monogram Club is the oldest and most exclusive of the student organizations of De Paul. It is the oldest because since the founding of De Paul, athletics has been synonymous with its nomeg the most exclusive in that you have to be a winner of a mayor letter in some sport in order to belong to this club. lt is the aim of every Fresh- man entering the Academy to belong to this organization and it can be said without doubt that it is a great honor to belong to the Monogram Club. The main purpose of the Monogram Club is to promote good sportsmanship among the students and a deep feeling of school spirit. This group of athletes is very active during the school year. They sponsor a dance in the tall of the year. a magazine drive during the winter, and also serve as ushers at home basketball games. All these activities are accomplished under the direction of our Moderator, Fr. William Gillespie. MEMBERS OF THE MONOGRAM CLUB uv Camera Club Ranking as one of De Paul's finest clubs, the Camera Club, under the direction of its moderator, Mr. McCabe, teaches any and all boys interested in photography the care and handling of a camera, the use of polaroid or filter lenses, light meters and artificial light as well as the taking, developing and printing of pictures, The members of the Camera Club are en- couraged to take plenty of pictures and to de- velop their films. Some of these better pictures taken by club members were used by the library. The officers of the Camera Club are Richard Petry, president, Ed. Aside from retaining friends the Alumni As- sociation of De Paul Academy has done much to foster higher education in the lives of deserving students. This is done through Scholarship pledges. A raffle for funds in order to continue the great work of the Alumni was held on a 575.00 Elgin watch. The Alumni cordially welcomes graduates to take part in the activities of the Association. MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF l926 AT A RECENT BANQUET 7.2. Propagation of the Faith Collectors Counting the Monday Morning donations One of the most active organizations at De Paul Academy is the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. This is the only organization in which every student may participate. The main purpose of the Society is that of giving financial aid to foreign missions. Each student is asked to give an offering every Monday morning, and although the contributions are free- ly donated, the amount collected is surprisingly high. At the end of each year, the total contribu- tions are sent by Father Fitzgerald to the Very Rev- erend Monsignor James M. Lawler, head of the Society in Chicago for distribution among the more needy missions at home and abroad. The Society is, in itself, an organization in- cluding officers, members, and regular monthly meetings. Officers for the past year were: John Dawson, president, Frank Larkin, vice president, Robert Lealy, secretary, and Frank Gremo, treasurer. On the last Friday of each month the officers and pro- moters for each home room meet to report activi- ties and discuss new ideas. lt is this same spirit of unity and brotherhood exists throughout the entire atmosphere of De Paul Academy. Propagation ofthe Fai th g 1 1 . JOHN DAWSON President Page sixty-one The Legion of Mary Since its establishment in January of l947 the Legion of Mary has grown into an all powerful group at De Paul with some very notable accomplishments. When first founded here by Father Fitzgerald, the Legion could claim only a small handful of members. This year, with a steady increase in mem- bership, the Legion was forced to form a new division called a pre- sidium. As a result, the Queen of De Paul Presidium and the Virgin Most Powerful Presidium, both under the patient guidance of Fr. Fitzgerald, carried out together the vast religious program at De Paul which was well supported by the students. ANDREA MUSCARELLO The purpose of the Legion of Mary is mainly self-sanctifi- Pmsidem cation, but two other duties of the Legion are to spread devotion to the Blessed Virgin and to sponsor and support religious activi- ties at De Paul. This year, the Legion fulfilled its purpose. Throughout the Annual Retreat, the Legion dis- tributed spiritual pamphlets to all students. During the month of May the Legion sponsored May Devotions. Members of the Legion directed the enlistment of students into the Fighting 69th. And again it was the Legion which distributed free Miraculous Medals and sponsored stu- dent enrollment into the Scapuiar. These are only a few of the many accomplishments cred- ited to the Legion in the School year of l95l-52. The Legion of Mary at De Paul academy is not only a credit to the school but a great assistance in the program of training good Catholic boys into better Catholic men. Thursday Group of the Legion Monday group of the Legion l-liluslzinians Although the Latin Society is only in its second year at De Paul, it has already gained a position as one of the more active organizations in the school. The members drew up their own constitution, changed the name of the society to the Hilustinians, making St, Hil- ary and St. Augustine the patron saints of the club, and elected officers, giving them the titles which were used in Roman times for these offices. Joe Kainz was elected Con- sul, or President, Bob Loizzi, Proconsul or Vice President, and Jim Kilroy, Scribe, or Secretary. Under the able lead- ership of these officers and the guidance of Father McHardy, the club participated in many worthwhile projects to give the members a better understanding of Roman culture and civil- ization. They participated in tours, listened to lectures, viewed movies and slides, and constructed projects all of which applied to Latin. The society is a member of the Junior Classical League and the Classical Association. Cer- tain members have been carrying on correspondence with Latin students in foreign coutries. All this cotributes to increasing the knowledge of Latin culture for the members of the club and the Latin students in all classes. Yes, the Latin Society, although a new organization, is one of the most active clubs in De Paul Academy today. This year, an exten- sive program of films and slides, borrowed from friends of the club and institutions and rented with club funds from various services, rounded out the year adequately. Much was integrated with classroom work. Mr. Gerard Heing was instrumental in the re-activating of the club a few years ago. He realized that in order to stimulate a greater in- terest in the German language, the student must first be interested in the German people. Many of the slides shown at the meetings were his own and he, as a person who has traveled in Europe lLeft to right? provided a running commentary for all of the slides and films which were shown. Mr, Heing has contributed greatly to the preservation and vivification of the club, and he and his students have benefited both in their curricular endeavors of teaching and learning the German language. The German club was not restricted to stu- dents taking German during the past year but was extended to those who had taken German and who were still interested in the language and in the country. Many seniors in this Classifica- tion enjoyed the privileges of membership. All in all, this year's club activities have proven that as long as the German language IS taught at De Paul, the German Club will remain of inestimable value to the language's better un- derstanding through a greater interest in it. A high spot of the year was when the Academy played host to over a hundred debators from the entire city in a group of debates. Debating is not the only field the club was active in for some of its members also appeared on radio programs and T. V. shows. The Student Congress was another of the colorful highlights of this year. The objectives of the club are to recognize and promote speech in high school, not only by debating but by participation in other fields, and also to foster a better rela- tionship between the high school and community. This is Mr. Riggi's first year but yet under his leadership the band has grown. He has undertaken the gigantic task of building a new band. He deserves great credit for developing this small but qualified group into fine musicians. The conductor has attacked the problem in much the same manner as the band attacks a piece of music -with spirit and devotion to the task. This year the band was unable to make appearances at the basketball and football games. However, it did appear at the Annual Christmas Party. In the spring the band per- formed at the Spring Concert in conjunction with the school choir. The Academy has purchased both new instruments and uniformsg the Academy is proud of this band which will be- come one of the finest in the city. Mr, Kuntz and Members of the Choir at a Concert Presented for the Parents and Faculty in the Auditorium This year the choir completed its third year under the direction of Mr. Robert Kuntz. The president for this year was Herbert Tobey, a fine first bass. Of course the purpose of this choir, like that of any other choir, is to sing. ln the De Paul Academy Choir, all members are given an ample opportunity to do so. Every Friday morning the members ascend to the choir loft to sing Mass for the student body. The choir sang two concerts this year. One was at the annual Christmas party for the Mother's and Dad's Club, the other in the Spring. At the end of the year the choir sang Mass and Benedic- tion tor the graduating members of the Academy at the Com- mencement Exercises. For three decades it has been the pleasant task of the staff to keep all Demon students posted on the various scholastic and interscholastic activities involv- ing the school, its students, and its organiza- tions. This has been accomplished, of course, through the monthly fwell, almosti publica- tion of the student newspaper of DPA, the Prep. This year's Prep, under the able direc- tion of its moderator, Mr. Joseph Lobos, was issued seven times, and was always eag- erly awaited by all. A number of under- clossmen answered September's call for Prep 8 ll recruits. These fellows performed ably un- der the guidance of the editorial staff which included: Marty Hedrich, Editor, Tom Rusk, Associate editor, Jack Brady, Sports editor, and Bill Hayes, James Kokie, Andy Musca- rello, and Joe Schneider, Assistant editors. The readers of the Prep and their friends had a royal treat the evening of February 2lst when the staff presented its annual Prep Hop. Dan Belloc's fine orchestra did the honors, and the some four hundred teen-agers in attendance acclaimed the dance as one of the top social events in recent years at DPA. lt is our sincere desire that the Prep will continue to reap the profits of its journalistic endeavors in years to come just as it has in the post thirty. SOCIETY FOR THE PRESERVATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF MODEL RAILROADING AT DE PAUL RONALD LANDON President Page seventy-eight THE RAILROAD CLUB ln looking forward to its third year, the Railroad Club can indeed be proud of its great success in the past two. The club has been of undeniable credit to the school in its function of encouraging and as- sisting those engaged in the greatest hobby of them all, Model Railroading. Throughout the Year, the club's programs were en- riched by movies, slides, lectures, and discussions. Con- siderable planning and preparation went into the pre- setation of the group's Open House staged early in January. This was the second attempt at placing the functions of the organization before the student body. The event was very well attended. Along about April, the members partook of the most stimulating activity of the year, namely their Spring field trip. This time the chosen site was the Pullman plant in Michigan City. Of course this af- forded the group the excuse to travel by rail, and by rail they did, with special accommodations. Officers for the past year were Ronald Landon, President, Donald Patrick, Vice President, and John Beal as Secretary-Treasurer. Father Munster, in his post as moderator, helped immensely to coordinate The efforts of the club's members and officers. Unlike most clubs, this one advocates underclass- men as officers because they can be advised by past officers who are still members of the club. One thing the group is especially proud of is the certificate of appreciation it received from the lllinois Central Railroad for cooperation in the celebration of the road's centennial year. Cisca The l95l-52 school year brought to De Paul Academy a new organization, the Fighting 69. The Fighting 69 , whose purpose is to promote higher standards of purity according to the sixth and ninth corn- mandments, was brought to De Paul this year under the spon- sorship of Fr. Munster. The Fighting 69 was started in the Catholic High schools when Cardinal Stritch asked the high school principals for a student organization which would fight immorality and promote purity. That was last sum- mer, since that time great strides have been taken and the Main Cisca organization is planning to branch out. Already in De Paul there are over 500 students enrolled in the 69. The 69 at De Paul is closely connected with the Legion of Mary and the two organizations are doing a splendid job in promoting purity throughout the student body. Q AA? 1 TIM SULLIVAN The Junior Captain Captain Denny La Bud, a quiet, retiring, blond Junior cager has been Q leader academically for over three years, so it was logical that his mates honor him with the captaincy in this, his senior year. Speed is his long suit, and he is also an excellent shooter, utilizing chiefly a long, two-hand set shot. A fine competitor, Denny has that exceptional speed which makes him a dangerous leader of the fast break-a steady performer-not flashy--but one who will make few mistakes. Upon the big, broad frame of this 200 pound, 6 ft. 4 in. giant, much of the fortune of the Senior '52 five squarely rests. The affable Smitty will follow a Demon captaincy tradition of leading by example. His two years of directing play from the quarterback slot of De Paul elevens will help him immeasurably. These sports are not new to them having participated in them in high school and continuing on in college until the university discontinued the sport. Both were letter men in high school and college. Al- though they are young, they showed their worth as coaches by bringing two Cross Coun- try championships to De Paul in their first season as coaches. They hope to continue this through the 1952 track season. De Paul can look forward to many more well coached teams as long as these two young men are coaching. QL? .- 'PZ' THE JUNIOR TRACK TEAM De PauI's 1952 track team will be sparked by five Major letter men from Cross Country and one of them also a track letterman. The cindermen received their largest turnout in many years which gave them better depth in every event. The season started March I9 and con- tinued through the middle of May, when the Catholic City Junior meet took place. Prac- tice was held at Wrightwood Playground for the distance men and sprinters while the field events and hurdles were routined on the ath- letic field. Coach Meehan took charge of the running events while Coach McCarthy presided over the field events. ln their first meet, a triangular assembly, between St. George, De Paul and Loyola, at Loyola stadium, the Demons came out on top by a score of 44V2 4l, lO with Loyola taking second place. Ed Monnelly was high point man with 9lA1 points, winning the three-quarter mile, tak- ing second in the 220. Other firsts good for five points were Bob Housechild, high jump, Bill Kilbourne, pole vault, Wayne Johnson, low hurdles. De Paul's juniors also won the half mile relay, the team consisting of Don Fox, Jerry Mikula, Ed Monnelly and Bob Ber- gant. Each man received UA points for their race. Because of the St. Mel's meet being post- poned the coaches started the team practic- ing for the Loyola relays which is next to city in importance. The l95l Track Team THE SENIOR TRACK TEAM De Paul Senior team was aided by the furn- out of the senior football players and several Iettermen from the Cross Country team. Some of the leading track and field men were Jack Brady and Richard Dubes, hurdles, Wayne Lavin, the mile, Paul Silvio, sprints, and Jerry Kabinzinski, broad jump. The seniors did not do as well as the jun- iors in their first meet, but mostly because Loyola and St. George have been practicing much longer. Jack Lavin placed second in the mile which gave him three points. Rich- ard Dubes and Jack Brady scored two points and one point, for third and fourth respec- tively, Bill Foley tied for first place in the high jump and received four points. The seniors also started training for the Loyola relays, when the St. Mel meet was called off. The senior relays will be a week after the juniors meet. After their meet the seniors should be ready to represent De Paul in the Catholic Senior Meet. - SENIOR CROSS COUNTRY SQUAD JUNIOR CROSS COUNTRY SQUAD CITY CHAMPS Under the leadership of their new coaches, Tom Meehan and Tom McCarthy, De Paul's Juniors took first place in Catholic City junior cross country sponsored this year by St. Mel's High school. The mile and a quarter race was held at Columbus Park Golf Course. De Paul's Ed Monnelly took first place with Wayne Johnson, Bill Kilbourne, Jerry Mikula, and Don Fox finishing 3rd, 4th, 7th, and l8th respectively. De Paul's Harriers finished with a lead of 33, forty points ahead of second place Leo, last year's champs. All but Don Fox were from the l95O squad which finished second to Leo. Other members of this year's team are Jim Lynch, Randy Kenar, Ron Turk, and Ken Hartman, who were the only fresh- men on the squad. MIDWEST CHAMPS De Paul's Seniors, with the help of three members of the Junior team, defeated high- ly rated Leo and St. Ignatius' in the Sun-Times Midwest meet, and received the first place trophy. After several setbacks in dual meets and city the Blue Demons pulled an upset by win- ning when nobody gave them a chance. The team was again led by Ed Monnelly who strided in well ahead of the rest of the run- ners. Following Monnelly were Wayne John- son, Wayne Wagner, Jack Lavin, and Bill Kilbourne. Wagner and Lavin were the only members to finish in the first five. Other members of the Senior team were Jack Bach, Ray Clem, Hugh Connor and Bob Grishaber. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL CHAMPS lnlzramural Basketball Page one hundred forty The intramural basketball season found a number of fine fives competing in each class. After two rounds of play, the class champions emerged: Seniors, Stevens, Juniors, Heiberger, Sophomores, Batalla, and Freshmen, Elliott. ln the semifinal eliminations, Elliott whipped Batalla for the first lunch period title, and gained the right to meet the junior-senior champs in the title game. Stevens' cagers took the other semi-final battle, by a 19-18 margin on Bill Hayes' last second charity toss. A week later the stage was set for the championship battle in the Auditorium. Stevens' Senior crew took an 8-5 edge at the quarter, but Elliott's lads rallied to a ll-lO lead at the half. The fray continued on even terms until the final second when Bill Hayes again won the game with a final-second free throw. Final score: Stevens fSeniorsl 25, and Elliot fFreshmenl 24. Hayes led the scorers with l8 points, while Elliott, Palley, and Brown led the Freshmen in their game but hapless effort. Jack Lovin won the intramural free throw contest, the finals of which were held during the intermission, and then came the feature event of the night, the Faculty-Football Team game. The Faculty emerged victorious lwith the referees' aidl by a 29-27 count in two overtime by virtue of Don Amidei's two charity tosses. High scores in this laugh-filled match were Messers. Bzoch and Meehan for the Faculty with 8 and 6 points respectively, while John Smyth's I2 points and Bob Sorrentino's 6 points led the losers.
