L'vf 'llfio V -- 348 nip For twentj. z.ve years the ' De Paul Prep has served the students and the school as the voice and outlet of student views That it has entirely succeeded in this endeavor can be recognized merely by noticing its tremendous growth and ever constant student support, lf it had not been for the pupils interest it would have been impossible for the Prep to develop from a Weak one page issue into the strong six page publication that it is at present. ln recognition of the Silver lubilee, an Anniversary Hop was held and was attended by the De Paulites and friends alike. To climax the celebration, a special Anniversary issue was published in May. Despite the continual rising cost of printing and engraving the Editorial Board continued the six page publication. Even in the face of these seemingly insurmountable difficulties the Staff was able to present the best issues that any student of De Paul Academy has ever read. Our moderator, Rev. W, l.f. The band continued to play at the football games, where they ranfi out with many popular marches, The band with their blue Demon sweaters marched on the field on several occasions. The first formal appearance of the band was at the Mothers' and Dads' Christmas Party. They had a beautiful program which inf cluded White Christmas and A Yuletide Overture, The band conf cluded their program by playing Iolly Old St. Nicholas. At the Dramatic Club Play, several boys from the band lent their talent by playing many popular selections by George Gershwin, lrving Berlin, lerome Kern, and Cole Porter. Among other activities, the band took its position in playing at the basketball games where they helped cheer their team to victory by their fanfare of marches and popular songs, The season was brought to a close by the Annual Spring Conf cert in May in which they played overtures, marches, and novelties, including Zampa, Lutspiel, and Sentimental Reasons. I lfl'l 0 tAQ QOJCQI' De Paul found a new and revised A.O.TR. at the start ol this year. This organization was the revised form ot the Army ot the Rosary which existed at De Paul here during the War. lts purpose had been to aid the servicemen by the members saying a daily rosary tor the Welfare and the sate return ol some service man. The revised club this year devoted itsell to the model ol purity, the Blessed Mother. Through her intercession and under her guidance the revised A.Q.T.R. carried on its Work privately. Part ol its work Was saying the rosary as often as possible, even daily The remainder and the great- est part of its work was that of Catholic action which was to combat immoral literature or speech here in the Academy. This Catholic action was private and voluntary. One ot the first works ol the revised A.O.T.R. was the founding and publishing of the weekly religious bulletin At the beginning ot the second semester of this school year the A.O.T.R. united with the Legion ot Mary here at De Paul to act as one organization. Father FitzGeralcl, moderator of the club at the Academy, thought that since both organizaions have the same aim and carry on the same work, it was better to join a world-wide organization as this one with its many indulgences attached. The Seniors took North Section Championship with a record of l3 wins and 2 losses. Their only losses came at the hands of Loyola and Weber. As they entered the play-offs for the League Championship, lfft. Carmel upset them so their season ended there. They still had a great season with a total game record of 23 wins and 4 losses. Very few schools had records such as this, and we think that this team was one of the greatest in the schools history. There was good leadership and they were well spirited. Den Turschrnan did a fine goo at captaining the team, Even with five of the top men graduating, the team should show a fine season again next year because of the strength of reserves on the Senior team. The five men graduating are Don Turschman, a three year letterman in basketballg Walter Rohde, a three year letterman in basketball, football, and traclcg Bob Kampa, a two year letterman fl basketball Earl Hayes, a three year letterman in basketball, and Kent la- copson, a two year letterman gn basketball. lirt- li.: ir- ifln-2 TOP ROW: Coach McGrath, Father O'Malley. With only four men returned from the X46 squad, and only one of these a letterman, the luniors had much inexperience in league competition, and the going was tough. They may have lost the greater majority of their games, but they never quit playing un' til that final whistle had sounded. Rudy Bauser captained the team. He was the only letf terman returning from last year. The team was built around him with Ray Blumenthal pair- ing up with him at guard. At the forwards were the two seniors of the club, Bud l-leioerger and Art Taylor. Sophomore Marty Huber rounded out the team at center, A fairly bright future is looked forward to with everyone returning except Heiberger and Taylor. De Paul again this year had a splendid bowling league Although there were a few teains less than in the past few years, the competition nevertheless ran Just as high arnong the leagues teams. Under the capable leadership of the moderator, Bev. C. Bogetto, assisted by the leagues president Fran Bruns and his officers Bay Eichenlaub and Pete Kass, the first half of the bowling season came to a close at the Bowlium on Broadway Avenue. The five top men, Strass, Bauer, Ptack, Tennessen and Slclena, had an average range ing from MO to l54. The lucky bowlers that made the SOO Club were Torn Strass, Fran Bruns, Bob Tennessen, Don Kass and Arnie Voltl. The second half of the bowling season found the students every Wednesday after school at a new location, The Lincoln Lanes at Lincoln Avenue and Boscoe Street. The new lanes seemed to have inspired the league according to the averages bowled here. With this slcill and high spirited enthusiasm, the De Paul Bowling League will set a new record of high bowling averages. On Dec. l8, De Paul had their first match of the year, by beating St. Michaels squad by 341 pins.
