The band then traveled to Shelbyville for a Non-Competitive Show Exhibition and received many compliments from other schools regarding the difficulty of the show design. The first contest, at the U of I, pitted the Eagles against a few bands almost 4 times as large. D-W finished 4th out of 8 and drum major Gary Lenz finished 3rd. At ISU the Eagles again faced much bigger bands but still came home with a 2nd place out of 4 and Gary Lenz captured the Drum Major trophy. More emphasis was placed this year on the rest of the band year. The D-W Pep Band played for more girls’ basket- ball games as well as guys basketball games. The students did quite well at solo and ensemble contest against some very severe judging and in fact ranked 10th statewide in class D, in solo and ensemble. The highlight of the year was Organization Contest at Villa Grove, where the band played enthusiastically for 4 very critical judges. They captured a Superior, Division 1 rating, one of few given out that day! Connie Mulvaney and Bryan Hall. They have a lot of talent. Congratulations. Keep up the good work! Gary Lenz, President; Bonnie Brighton, Treasurer; Cheryl Stroh, Secretary. Later in the year they also sponsored a Christmas dance and a soc-hop after one of the basketball games. These also went over very well. As usual the student council sold pop to make money to sponsor these dances. Mr Schwarzentraub Sponsor, Todd Wingstrom, President.
