DeLand-Weldcn Hish School 19 $ 1 - 19§2 1 In the beginning there was an idea. It grew and took on shape. The idea is now in your hand, a finished product. Sound easy? It wasn’t! The idea came about in a meeting last year. A theme was born. It was then developed and refined over the summer. A letter was sent to gain permission. The theme kept growing. The reply came — all systems go. The theme continued to grow all year and now it is before your eyes as a full-grown yearbook. Why were the Muppets chosen as the theme? They were chosen because we love them and can even relate to them in some ways. Animal, the wild drummer; Fozzy, the lovable comic bear; Miss Piggy, the sophisticated star and Kermit, the leader of the gang are just a few of the Muppets we love. See if you can find a bit of yourself in the Muppets as you reminisce through this yearbook. 2 Table of Contents Electric Mayhem Band (Organizations) Fozzy Bear (Sports) Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker (Faculty) Scooter and Robin (Underclassmen) Miss Piggy (Seniors) Pigs in Space (Activities) 5 17 33 39 49 61 i HENSON ASSOCIATES + C 117 EAST Ctf STREET NEW VORK NV 100?1 (212) 794 2400 TElEX 420750 PRODUCERS Of THE MUPPfTS November 6, 1981 Leta Floyd, Editor De Land -Weldon Yearbook Route 1 DeLand, Illinois 61839 Dear Leta: 1 am pleased to confirm that we have granted DeLand Weldon High School permission to use original drawings of MUPPET characters in your 1982 yearbook. In Memory of Allen L. liuisinfia yearbook Staff lias Candy Sales For Project The yearbook editor this year was Leta Floyd. We took a lot of pictures, lost a few, scrambled to meet deadlines, worked after school, and had a good time putting the book together. The staff would like to thank Leta and Mrs. Blackburn for all their help and great ideas. Eand Marches in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Parades The band had another successful year. Numbers may have been small, but the power was still there. The year began in August with a week-long camp. The year also began with a new director, Terri Huff. The first march- ing competition was held at U. of I. on October 10. The band did very well in both field and show competition. The next competition was at I.S.U. on October 24. The band received first place in field competition. Students attended solo and ensemble contest again this year. The band attended organizational contest on April 17. A first place rating was received. Some of the students also attended E.I.U. Honor Band held at Charleston on May 7. The day was filled with hard work. A Christmas and a spring concert were given. Many varieties of music were performed. The highlight of the year was the invitation to march in the Philadelphia, Pa. and the Washington, D.C. In- dependence Day parades. Students worked hard to raise enough money to go. The trip was from July 2 through July 7. Kevin Kizer, Drum Major; Sherri Baker, Captain of the Guard; Joni Brian, Assistant Drum Major; Ken Kizer, Percussion Leader. 8 A Successful year f cr Chcrus This year the Choral Dept, was very active. The group performed for the community and also gave Christmas and spring concerts. The chorus went to organizational contest this year for the first time in a number of years. The group was well prepared and did a fine job. Many members took part in the solo and ensemble contest at Monticello. The students did very well. This year the musical “Calamity Jane” was per- formed. It was directed by Mrs. Parrish. The student direction was Debbie Stroh. Members of the chorus also participated in the S.V.C. Chorus held at Octavia. They learned a lot. ‘ miRiiuiii ' ..iLliillll , 4118(11111 I IISIIII liillllll llllllli 1IHIIII llllllli 3111111111 iiiiiiii inieiiii llllllllll! ■lllllllll! Other A.F.S. students came from other high schools with their host families. The students were given a tour of the Clinton Power Plant on Saturday morning. A swimming par- ty was held in the afternoon and a potluck supper was held that even- ing. After the supper, a talent show was given by the D-W students and other A.F.S. students. Seniors were very much aware that this was their last homecoming dance. Day in and day out, Student Council affects anyone who drinks pop or Hi-C. As usual, they sold this to make money to sponsor different things. Student Council also tried to help the students by trying to get privileges back that were taken away last year. The graduating class of 1982 accumulated many memories of D.W.H.S. during the past four years. For the class of 1982, uniforms, pizza after the games, parties, and DeLand-Weldon are things of the past. They are good times that are never to be forgotten by those who learned, grew, and enjoyed their high school days together. At times, seemingly unsolvable prob- lems would break up the good times, the class would ask “why us’’ and move on. They have now achieved the first goal of their lives. They must begin to reach other goals — goals each in- dividual must set for himself. The seniors would like to express their gratitude to everyone who made these last four years unforgettable! Karla King, Sue Baker and Tracey Larson 52 Margie and Stephanie Boley Margie and Angie McConkey enjoy the AFS Christmas party. D-W Students Welcome Margie Hare Margie came to us in July. With her came the smile that we all loved. She not only brightened the days of her host family, the Robert Kingston’s, but also those of everyone who met her. Margie was involved in many activities. In the fall, she played volleyball and was a member of the flag squad in the band. During the winter, she was on the basketball team. In addition to all of this, Margie was involved in many clubs. She was always willing to help when work needed to be done. Thanks, Margie, for sharing this year with all of us. Attendant: Rene Roy and Todd Baker Homecoming week was its usual good time! There was never a spare minute — wall decks had to be started — and finished, practices had to be held, and just the usual exciting homecoming thoughts. In be- tween all this, we were supposed to find time to study. After an exciting homecoming game with Homer, we had more to celebrate with a victory under our belts. In overtime, we had defeated Homer, 12-6, for our first homecoming game victory in many years. Saturday morning came early as student council members had to decorate for Grand March Saturday night. The night was one to remember for the attend- ants and the King and Queen of ’81 Homecoming — Ken Kizer and Tracey Larson. 1. Steve Russell, Teresa Fink, Rita Ingram 2.
