The tone was set when David Norton (start- ing center) broke his thumb during the first week of practice. Injuries and bad luck were to hound us the entire season. In some games, we had as many as six starters sidelined. Still the mighty Eagles fought on. Quitting was one word they didn’t know. We made one of the greatest comebacks I’ve ever seen against FC-M. Our last game against LeRoy was a gutty, hard fought contest; one I’ll never forget. I was carried from the field (in my last game as Coach of the Eagles) on the shoulders of my players. This is the greatest tirbute a coach can receive. Thanks Eagles, for the past seven years. John W. Lenz Head Football Coach DeLand-Weldon Eagles DEFENSIVE LINE: Jim Reynolds. The 1979-80 team became only the third Eagle team to advance to the sectional championship game of the state tournament series. The Eagles were led by Dan Pearl and Rick Duggins. Both were unani- mous all-conference selections. Roger Huisinga received honorable mention all-SVC. Karl Parrish, Steve Riddle, and Phil Carter rounded out the starting line up. The Eagles were second in the SVC as they dropped the season finale at Fisher, dropping D-W out of a tie for first place. The Eagles set school records in team free throws shooting a percent- age of 67.8 for the season and in field goals shooting 50.1 percent for the year. Roger Huisinga JUMP BALL!!! GEORGE H. DUNN Pom-Pon Girls Get “Boogie Fever” With new uniforms and new ideas, the pom-pon squad kicked into the 1979-80 season on a good note. Profits made from a stand at the DeLand Homecoming and Send a Friend a Flower Day helped in the purchase of the new uniforms. Many of the new ideas came from five of the girls who attended summer camp. The girls worked under the leadership of Shelly Edwards. Much time was spent by each member of the squad in making and practicing routines for basketball games. Shelly Edwards — Captain FRONT ROW: Annie Langley. The high school Choral Department was involved in various activities this year. They gave Christmas and spring concerts featuring several different styles of music. The Choral Department is under the direction of Mrs. Patty Finks. A Swing Choir consisting of 12 girls was chosen in the fall. They were featured in both concerts and entertained for community events. The “Sound of Music” was performed April 11. The gym was filled with a large audience who participated in the “hills com- ing alive.” The director was Miss Laura King with Marilyn Carter as Student Director. Selected students took part in two festivals this year. In the fall, they attended an IMEA Festival and the Sangamon Valley Confer- ence Festival in the spring. The president, Randy Kizer, and all the other officers worked hard for this very important organization. AFS is important because without it we wouldn’t be able to welcome people like Glaida Penna to our community. The 1979-80 school would have been a little less exciting and interesting without Glaida to help us learn about people from other parts of the our world. The AFS Club sponsored a successful Haunted House last fall, celebrated Glaida’s birthday with a beautiful gift (and great food), and was able to get together for some good times. They are good times that are never to be forgotten by those who learned, grew, and enjoyed their high school days together. At times seemingly unsolvable problems would break up the good times, the class would ask “why us” and move on. The memories at DeLand-Weldon are memories to be treasured for- ever. Roger Huisinga THE LOFT — Monticello 52 Good Times with Glaida Glaida arrived in late July from her home in Coro- nel Fabriciano, Brazil to make her new home as an AFS student with the Colbert family of Weldon. Glaida loved piano, ballet, and snow, but did not really care for the cold weather. With her smile and warm personality, Glaida brightened the halls of D-W. We hope Glaida, like us, will hold many memories of the good times gone by. KAISERS — On the Square in Monticello Tom Apperson: Not pictured.
