When a senior class graduates, after establishing a two-year record of 44 - 12, a two-year hold on Regional and Conference Champs, most people usu- ally sigh and feel “it was nice while it lasted.” But this year ' s varsity did not give in to that easy-to-come by feeling. This year’s varsity had several obstacles to overcome. One of those obstacles was a taste of bad luck. They did achieve two outstanding things — defeating Fisher at Fisher and beating Clinton. This year’s group was a gutty group who had virtually no playing experience before this year. While they lost only 8 games, all were by under 9 points except one to Saybrook. I feel that next year we can step in right where we left off this past season to continue to improve as we did this year. Injuries, illnesses, or attitude are the only things that could stop us next year. The “pits” was the Argenta-Oreana game, the most humiliating experience to which we have ever subjected ourselves. We played well at times on offense, but we rarely played well on defense. We did score in every ballgame. This was an accomplishment which we are proud of. Our young kids learned a lot this year, and this experience will make 1979 a happy season. We are going for it ALL in 1979! Coach Lenz FRONT ROW: Tom Borton, Jamie Langley. Tom Gantz, Rick Swinger. Steve Hui- singa, Jim Reynolds, BACK ROW: Coach Lenz. Mike Roy, Dave Roy, Wes Kingston. The Squad, consisting of ten girls, danced to varied types of music during half time at basketball games. The girls were respon- sible for making up their own routines. With the leadership of Tina Foster, their captain, the girls remained a close and hard working group. This year, Tina Foster and Marti Jordan will retire their pom pons after graduation. Their talents and dependability will be greatly missed. 21 MONTICELLO AUTO DEALERS Mrs. Conner. Mr. Zehr, Sponsors; Leta Floyd, Treasurer; Annie Langley. President FRESHMEN HAVE SUCCESSFUL CANDY SALES The Freshman class kicked off the year with money-making projects. They picked up com at Lee Shaw’s and made $241.49. They decided they needed more money and sold Beich candies. During homecoming, they took second place with their float “un-do-it with Eagle power.” The Freshmen are very enthusiastic about making money for their class and plan to have more projects and activities before the year is over. SOPHOMORES BEGIN PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR’S PROM The Sophomores started the year with a money- making project, a cake walk, at the Deland and Weldon homecomings. Next was a workday where the class washed windows, raked leaves, etc. Class rings were eagerly awaited and finally arrived in December. The cake raffle at the basketball games came next. Then they had an opportunity to serve the DeKalb seedcorn dinner. This was also a profitable undertaking and helped boost the treasury. In February, blue slips arrived and profits were made on a cheese and sausage sale. JUNIORS EXCEED MONEY MAKING GOALS Planning and raising money for the Senior Prom kept the Juniors and their sponsors extremely busy. A large sum of the Junior’s money came from magazine sales. Juniors also “got their act together” and presented “Suitable for Hang- ing”, their class play. Other money making projects included concessions at the basketball games and popcorn sales. The Juniors have high hopes of a Senior trip with their extra money. SENIORS CLIMAX YEAR WITH TRIP TO BAHAMAS The graduating class of 1979 accumulated many memories of D- W during the past four years. They have now achieved the first goal of their lives. They must begin again to reach other goals — goals each individual must set for himself. The seniors would like to express their gratitude to the faculty, administration, and friends for making these last four years unforgettable. The cast and stage members spent months of preparation into their lines, scenery and special effects. The audience was held in suspense and often surprised by explosive devices, bats, fog, and people disappearing before their very eyes. The amount of work put in by the Seniors involved, provided a frightening, yet enjoyable, night for all. Also, AFS exchange students from all over the world have had the opportu- nity of living in our communities. An AFS weekend in March was successful with 16 AFS’ers from surrounding towns here. Many friendships were made, and it is easy to understand why the AFS motto is “Walk together, talk together, all ye people of the earth. Then, and only then, will ye have peace. Jackie Huisinga. Yet, with Mr. Bertucci as our director, the band excelled in another year of performances. Beginning with marching in the fall, the 52-member band performed at every home football game. They also partici- pated in three competitions. At Eastern Illinois University, the marching Eagles received a first in Class C-D. This quali- fied them to perform their show before a pre-game college football crowd in the afternoon. At ISU, the band placed third in Class C-D, but received the highest point total in Class D. At the U of I competition, the marching Eagles swept the board, winning all awards in Class D. Participating in two contests in the spring, the band proved to be talented musically. Out of thirteen band members who took part in the solo and ensemble contest, there were nine first place ratings. The concert band, consisting of 41 members, received a first place rating in organizational contests held at Monti- cello.
