To The 1977 78 Marching Eagles: This year was a very special one in many ways. Being the defending champion in every competition we entered this fall, the band had the added pressure of upholding the tradition established by the fine band we had in 76-77. All other bands seemed to point toward beating Deland-Weldon. The real highlight of the year was watching the band each day preparing itself to face this challenge. Beset with losing a large portion of the band to graduation, we had to start from scratch and rebuild whole sec- tions with first year students. The pride, determina- tion, and “class” which each student exhibited was truly the secret to our success. The band’s finest hour came at the University of Illi- nois Marching Festival when we won all six categories in our class. In the field, the band placed 10th overall out of 48 bands and in the parade, we placed third overall out of 65 bands with a score of 95.5 — a new state record for Class D! In combined score, the Eagles finished fourth in the state, finishing behind Monti- cello. Wheeling, and Galesburg. I wish to extend my personal congratulations to each band member for his outstanding accomplishments this past year in band. Through your willingness to dedicate yourself to being the best, you have achieved what others with more have not. The hard work and pride in being a champion is something few realize. Chorus The Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Finks, had a very successful year. Con- tests brought many first place awards. Their production of “Bye, Bye, Birdie” was an outstanding highlight of the year.
