For everyone, school offered moments of Everyday we walked through the Same doors, sat in the same chairs, and leaned against the same lockers. During our year the path never changed — only our directions and destinations. Foster RAU REALTY Farmer City To The 1977 78 Marching Eagles: This year was a very special one in many ways. Being the defending champion in every competition we entered this fall, the band had the added pressure of upholding the tradition established by the fine band we had in 76-77. All other bands seemed to point toward beating Deland-Weldon. The real highlight of the year was watching the band each day preparing itself to face this challenge. Beset with losing a large portion of the band to graduation, we had to start from scratch and rebuild whole sec- tions with first year students. The pride, determina- tion, and “class” which each student exhibited was truly the secret to our success. The band’s finest hour came at the University of Illi- nois Marching Festival when we won all six categories in our class. In the field, the band placed 10th overall out of 48 bands and in the parade, we placed third overall out of 65 bands with a score of 95.5 — a new state record for Class D! In combined score, the Eagles finished fourth in the state, finishing behind Monti- cello. Wheeling, and Galesburg. I wish to extend my personal congratulations to each band member for his outstanding accomplishments this past year in band. Through your willingness to dedicate yourself to being the best, you have achieved what others with more have not. The hard work and pride in being a champion is something few realize. To each of you, thanks, and again. Congratulations! Roger Sampson DRUM MAJORS: Dean Worthey and Jackie Huisinga 10 THE INTERIOR SHOP KAISER’S On the Square in Monticello Chorus The Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Finks, had a very successful year. His host family was the Kallembach’s. Carsten’s home is in Kiel, Germany. Kiel is quite larger than DeLand, with a population of 750,000. Carsten says the schools in Germany have no study halls and are dismissed at 1 o’clock every- day. He likes that better. He also likes reading, playing guitar, and pizza. Carsten feels that, even though he likes small towns, he wouldn’t like to live in one. We enjoyed having Carsten with us and hope he enjoyed his stay equally well. 21 WELDON OIL COMPANY 22 RICK RUDISILL GARY SCOTT BRYON SEBENS 23 SPRAY PHOTOS I 11.1 I I TINA BAKER Chorus. ),2 Musical 1,2 FHA 1.3.4 Vice Pres. 4; AFS 3 Let- terman’s 2,3 4 French Club 2.3.4 Library Club 1 GAA 1 2 Volleyball 2,3 St. Council 1,4 Flag Carp. 2 fom Pon,. 3,4 Track 1,£ RANDY BARTON FFA 1,2 Secretary 2; French Club 3,4 St. Council. 3,4 AFS 4 Pres. 4; Band 1,2,3 Vice Pres. 3; Football 2,3,4 Basketball 1,2 Track 1,2,3 Class Treas 4 Let- terman’s 2,3,4 OPAL BLACKFORD Chorus 2,3,4 Musical 2,3,4 Library Club 2 CARSTEN BORISS AFS Student DOUG EDWARDS Football 1,2,3, 4 Track 1, 2,3,4 Chorus 2,3 Letterman ' s 1.2. 3. 4 Class Pres. 4 Class Vice Pres. 3 Band 1 Musical ' 2,3,4 Basketball 2 KEVIN FINK Football 1,2 Track 2 Letterman’s 2,3, Baseball 1 ALAN FISHER Basketball 4 JULIE FLOYD Track 1,2 AFS 2,3,4 Volleyball 2.3.4 GAA 1,2 St. Council 3,4 Vice Pres. 4; French Club 2,3,4 Girl ' s State 3 Pep Club 4 Letter man ' s 2,3,4 Basketball Stat 3,4 DAN GREGORY Football 1,2, 3, 4 Basketball 1. 2.3.4 Track 1,2,3, 4 Baseball 1 Class Pres. 3 FFA 1,2, 3, 4 Pres. 2,3,4; Pep Club 4 Pres. 4; Letterman ' s 1, 2,3,4 Pres. 4 SHAWN HITER Volleyball 2,3,4 GAA 1,2 Letter man ' s 3,4 Secretary 4; Track 1 St. Council 1,3,4 Pep Club 4 Vice Pres. 4; Cheerleader 1,2 Yearbook 1,2, 3,4 Editor 4; Bas ketball Stat 3,4 DON KALLEMBACH Band 1,2, 3, 4 Chorus 2,3,4 Musical 2,3 AFS 4 Who ' s Who in Amer. The team made a valiant effort in losing the Sectional Championship to Mason City, who went on to become an Elite Eight team. The defensive minded Eagles held Mason City to their lowest offensive game of their entire season, includ- ing state champion Nashville’s defensive effort on Mason City. This is a reflection of Coach Kimble’s feelings towards the players and the season. ‘‘There were many positive notes on the season for the team and for individuals. What was gratify- ing to me was to see the way this group of young men have matured physically, mentally, and emo- tionally both on and off the basketball court since they came into high school as freshmen. I have lost and won with them, laughed and cried with them joked with and chewed them. But we did it together. That’s what made us 44-12, Regional and Confer- ence Champs two years in a row.
