There are many endless hours of select- ing songs for marching, concerts, and contest; rewriting many songs; arranging the competi- tion show; meeting with other directors; attend- ing workshops; working with each student; and the list goes on. Without the dedica- tion and love of our di- rector the D-W band would not be the cham- pions they are today. And for that reason we are proud to dedicate this 1976-77 yearbook to you, Mr. Roger Sampson. â 4 | rt l ' rTl Howard Gantz, President Marjorie Huisinga, Mike Perkins, David Gregory, Bill Floyd, Jerry Palmer, A1 Perring BOARD AnminisTRATiun Under the leadership of Mr. Bowen, Mr. Gantz, and the Deland -Weldon School Board, our school year pro- gressed smoothly. We appreciate their efforts to maintain a sound educational program for the students in this school district. With a great deal of community coop eration, a bond referendum was passed in 1976. Robert Bowen, Superintendent 6 FIRST STATE BANK OF MONTICELLO Marie White Emily Colbert Esther Floyd Marie White retired in May, 1976, after having worked in District 57 for 28 years. She is missed by administ rators, faculty, and students. Emily Colbert replaces Marie. We are happy to have her with us. Esther Floyd is Mr. Heller ' s secretary and also supervises the office. She is the most cooperative, helpful, and patient lady we students and faculty could ever hope for. One that was most important was to get as many scalps for the 50 point club . They held 20 of their 27 opponents to 50 points or less. This defensive pride enabled them to held opponents to an average of 50 . 3 points a game which was the BEST defensive team ef- fort in all the Champaign - Urbana and Decatur area. They also broke the school defensive record twice- holding an opponent to just 20 points . The goals were to win the Tolono Xmas Tournament , The Eagle Classic, 20 games, the Sangamon Valley Con- ference, the Regional, and the Sectional. They accom- plished four of their goals and 2nd in another. Next year ' s team goals will be exactly the same with at least the Su- per Sectional step as one of the additional goals . With this year ' s Varsity breaking the ice and Laying the groundwork , they want to continue to improve their re- cord and travel to the Sectional and Super Sectional . Thanks to a dedicated , hardworking group of basketball players, the Varsity ended up 21-6, Frosh-Soph 12-6, and the Frosh 4-0. This was a year that will not be for- gotten for many a year. The competition at Eastern proved that the band can compete and win against schools many times their size and structure. The competition at the Univer- sity of Illinois was a special highlight be- cause they won so convincingly against schools their size. To win the field div- ision by more than twenty points was a thrilling climax for the season and ac- knowledged the band ' s efforts in the most appropriate way. Mr. Sampson stated: I wish to extend my personal congratulations to each band member for his outstanding accomplish- ments this past year in band. Through your willingness to dedicate yourself to be- coming the best, you have achieved much more than material gain. The hard work involved in becoming a champion is something that only those who are in the band will ever realize. To each of you, thanks and again, CONGRATULATIONS! D. Anderson and S. The Class of 1977 have reach their destiny of high school and now shall go out and begin a new life. It seems sad to leave all our care-free days behind us, but the time for us to go and face the real world has come. And as we leave D-W we will always remem- ber the fun -filled memories of our school days with our special friends and teachers. We cannot leave without expressing our appreciation for the help from our two sponsors Mrs. Blackburn and Mr. Edman, so to them we say THANK YOU, for all you did for us. Dolores Delights D-W The new face in school this year belongs to Dolores Wirts, our AFS student. Dolores is staying with the Howard Poff family. She is from Sao Caetana, Brazil, where she lived with her brother, sister, and parents. Her father runs a grocery store there with the help of her mother. Dolores adjusted to many changes here. In her school there were over a thousand students, quite a bit larger than D-W. Also, the tropical climate of Brazil did not prepare her for our cold winter. On the coldest day in Brazil, the temperature does not go below 40°. Dolores is experiencing a new country and new friends. We hope that she carries away as many plesant memories of D-W as she has given us. 53 Mike Redmon Marsha Poff James Reed Judy McKinney Janet Moody Gina Olson DARLENE ANDERSON FHA 1,2,3, 4; AFS 3,4; Band 1,2, 3, 4 LISA BAKER Newspaper Staff 2, 3, 4, Copy Editor 2, 4, Editor -in-Chief 3; French Club 2, 3, 4, Vice- Pres. 2,4; Band 1,2,3, Band Librarian 3; Chorus 2, 3, 4, ; Pom Pon Squad 2, 3, 4; Musical 2, 3, 4; Jun- ior Play 3; Library Club 1, 2; Yearbook Staff 2; Track 1; GAA 1, 2; High Honors 1, 2, 3, 4; Nation- al Honor Society 3, 4; Typing Award 2,3; WC TU State Essay Contest Winner 1; Who ' s Who Among American High School Students 3, 4; Who ' s Who Among Mu- sic Students in Ameri- can High Schools 3, 4 RANDY BAKER Basketball Manager 1, 4; Track Manager 2, French Club 3, 4; Honor Roll 2,3, 4 MARY BLANKENSHIP GAA 2; FHA 3; AFS 3; Library 1,2,3; Chorus 3; Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Musi- cal 3; Junior Play; Pom Pon 3; DAVC 4 DARRELL CARR FFA 2, 3, 4, Vice Pres. 4; Student Council 4; Lettermanâs Club 3,4; Basketball 1,2, 3, 4; Football 1; Football Stat. 3,4; Honors 2,4 TIM CLIFTON Band 1,2, 3, 4; Yearbook 1, 2, 3; Student Council 2,3,4; Football 1; Bas- ketball 1; Class Vice- Pres. 3; Who ' s Who in American Music Stu- dents; Junior Class Play KIM COLBERT 56 FHA President 4; Cheer - leading 4; Band Officer 4, Yearbook Staff 4, AFS Officer 4; Letterman ' s Club 4; Class Treas. 4, Volleyball Stat. 4; Homecoming Queen 4; Honors 3, Band Ensem- ble 3 SHARON CRICHTON AFS 1,2,3, 4; FHA 1, 2, 3,4, Secretary Treas. 4; GAA 1,2,3, Sec.
