They were: Gordon Gregory, President; Kent Reeser, Vice-President; Jody Anderson, Secretary; Pam Haas, Trea- surer; and Linda Sprague, Student Council Rep. Our loyal sponsors were Mrs. Monts and Mr. Gregory. During the year they helped us excel in pecan and seed sales. The concession and homecoming stands took much time and effort. After four years of hard work, the seniors enjoyed their trip to Florida. MR. AND MRS. ROGER ADAMS Roolr Baker a v-scrro 6dvxt yosv C )JJYY) f- WILQO Vo es JUNIORS TAKE LEAD! It wasn ' t long into the year before the Juniors jumped right in there with their magazine sales. They did very well, making over $800. And before you could say Gorsh it was curtain time. The Jr. play was of a different air this year. It was a Hillbilly Weddin ' . A week hadn ' t passed and once again those ambitious Juniors were at it again. This time they were out there hustling those candy bars and donuts at the ballgames. To finally put the icing on the cake, the Juniors ended the year by putting on the Junior and Senior Prom. They en- tered a float entitled Eagles Are Expecting A Victory. All their hard work and time was rewarded by winning 1st place in the homecoming float contest. Fighting for class rings was a battle, but they were victorious. Rea- sons for receiving rings this year were lower prices, and an opportun- ity to wear them longer while in school. 18 SAY FRESHIES Freshman Officers; Kristi Manning- Student Council Representative; Juliana Meadors - Secretary; Daniel Gregory- President; Mindy Trimble- Treasurer; Randy Wisegarver- Vice President; Mr. Frazier- Sponsor. The reason he feels this way is because every senior on the team re- ceived mention on the all- conference team. Gordon Gregory was selected to: all area team, and second team all state. There were also several school re- cords. According to Coach (hubba) Lenz, the two ma- jor factors for the losing was that we were weak at our offensive right guard and tackle position. The other factor was that there wasn ' t enough competition for any position. He also felt that the lack of school spirit hurt the te am. It worked for the Minutemen last sea- son when they advanced to the quarter- finals of the state basketball tournament. Now the 24-year-old Kimble has begun applying that philosophy in his first year as a head coach at De Land-Weldon and the results so far have been outstanding. The Eagles have won their first seven games, including the championship in their own four-team round robin tour- nament, and the prospects look bright for the rest of the season. “You have to know what you’re shoot- ing for, said Kimble, a Western Illinois University graduate. “It gets depressing for kids to practice on cold winter nights. “They begin to say. ‘What the heck am I here for?’ Maybe having these goals reminds them. ’ De I and-Weldon has already ac- complished the first of its team goals with the title in their tourney, and next on the agenda is the championship of the San- gamon Valley Conference, in which they finished tied for fourth last year. The Eagles have already taken a step in that direction with a 70-56 triumph over Argenta in their first league game, but coming up Friday night will be n tough contest at Fisher Kimble asks a lot of his players, and ' hey have been responding. “They lift weights every day except game days.” Kimble said. “And they shoot 50 free throws every day. It’s expected that they get them done. ' Kimble’s weight program include ex- ercises only for the legs, and in addition, he makes the team go through ballhandl- ing, layup, rebounding, jumping and shooting drills before team practice real- ly gets under way. The Eagles also have the outstanding individuals to make the high goals within reach, including five seniors who played «n an eigth-grade team which advanced to the state tournament. “That’s put a lot of pressure on them. said Kimble. “Just that they went to the tfate in grade school doesn ' t mean a dam thing, but this is their last chance to fulfill the expectancies of the people around lierc. “The pressure definitely showed in our first ball game. They were afraid to make mistakes, but they’ve overcome it.” individually the team has been led by nwscular 6 foot 7 inch center Jeff Pearl, who is scoring at a 19.1-point per game dip and hauling down 13.7 rebounds. Forward Gordon Gregory, an outstand- ing football prospect at 6 4. 195 pounds, averages 14.2 points and 8.7 rebounds. Voth are seniors “Gregory lias been scoring well.” said Kimble. “But he prides himself as a rebounder. I think he would rather get 30 bounds in a game than 30 points. “Pearl moves well for a big man, and he has a lot of pride. I’ve told him that in our toughest games he should aim for ■J) points and 20 rebounds, but we espe- cially need those rebounds. “We need 30-40 rebounds a game from Gregory and Pearl. Others can pick up the scoring, but we don’t have the size on tin? rest of the team to make up for those rebounds.” Seniors Mark Sosamon (10.0 scoring average) and Bryan Baker (9.6) are the others who start every game lor the Eagles, while sophomore Roger Twist 7.0). junior Scott Sprague and senior Kelly Miter alternate at the other position. “All seven have started at one time or another. said Kimble. I feel like I have seven starters. Baker. Sosamon and Twist have the potential to score well, but so far they’ve been our best defensive players. They’re starting to get defensive pride. “Hiter and Sprague have he knack of settling our ball club down. Sprague ' s forte is ball handling, and he can pene- Irate. Miter hasbeen valuable because he ran play so many spots. He can play guard or forward. Russ Pearl. Dan Manning and Ron Barton, the other members of the varsity, make their contributions by performing their best in practice according to Kim- ble. Even though the Juniors had less than five weeks to prepare the play, we really pulled it off. Between keeping the boys there long enough after ball practice to even have re- hearsal, and getting everyone to learn their lines, many of us did have our doubts as to whether or not the show would go on . And conjuring up new ideas to get out of classes to work on the set was always a real challenge. But these are common problems that happen every year. We were faced with a new dilemma, though, having dress rehearsal snowed out. Mr. Heller came up with the brilliant idea of letting us practice during school. Finally on November 15 at 7:30 the curtain went up. And if any of us had any regrets, they just had to wait until the curtain went down. 68 WELDON OIL COMPANY “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN” The Junior-Senior Prom this year was held at the Holiday Inn in Champaign on May 17. The theme was Stairway To Heaven. A buffet dinner was served at 6:30 p.m. After the dinner, everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of the Jawbreakers. After the prom, everyone went to Foster ' s Bowling Alley for an eve- ning of bowling. ROCK -N i 72 MIKE’S BARBER SHOP C. Freshmen, you have just completed the most trying of your four years. You still have ample time to reach whatever goals you might have for yourself in high school. Sophomores, you have now reached the half way mark and can look forward to that busy junior year and such things as the class play and the prom. Juniors, you have but one last year at Deland-Weldon and by now are making plans for the future. Your final year holds many exciting moments with the last being gradua- tion. Graduating Seniors of 1975, my congratu- lations. You have now successfully completed your high school education and are headed in many different directions. I hope your years at Deland-Weldon High School will always hold pleasant memories. As you travel your many different roads, I hope your pitfalls are small and your accomplishments are great so you might reflect favorably on your school, your community, your family, and yourself.
