To the Students, There are two basic parts to being a successful member of our society. The first is being happy, satisfied, and self- sufficient as a person. The second is being a contributing member to society in the areas of productive economics, government, and the welfare of others. You can accomplish one or the other and still not be a successful member of our society. At DeLand-Weldon High School, we cannot give you ei- ther ingredient to becoming this successful member of soci- ety, but we can offer you the opportunity of learning to de- velop the above mentioned ingredients. Notice I say “the opportunity of learning to develop.” The learning and devel- oping are up to the student, not the teacher or the parent. If you are a senior, 1 sincerely hope you have learned to successfully develop happiness, satisfaction, self-sufficiency, ability to produce economically, welfare toward others, and governmental action. You should realize that, for a success- ful citizen, this learning to develop never ceases. Underclassmen need to grasp the opportunity of learning to develop the ingredients for success. The future demands on citizens will be greater than we can even conceive at this moment. To survive as a successful citizen will take more and more earnest work and thought. I hope you all are the successful citizens I have described above. Our future depends on it. Thank you for the 1967-68 school year. Principal, Mr. Robert Bowen Assistant Principal, Mr. John Baker Secretaries, Mrs. Judy Carr and Mrs. Esther Floyd

To the Students, In these trying and tense times what ideas, beliefs and values should one generation hope to pass to the next? What will happen to the Class of ’68 between now and 1978 no one can say with any certainty at all, but we do know there will be problems to solve personal, political, and social (not to mention the interplanetary problems). If, by example, teachers and parents can communicate the absolute need for intelligent use of all man’s resources, his brain, his heart, his hands and his technology, it is more than possible this will be an adequate inheritance to pass on to each succeeding generation. Hope for mankind is possible if man uses his intelligence, if his values are sound, and if his beliefs are based on truth. Each generation must discover truth in its own way, but hope is transmitted from one generation to the next.
