Administration Table of Contents Classes Activities Sports Freshmen Sophomores Juniors Seni wrs To a dedicated teacher and an inspiring coach who through his untiring efforts led the EAGLES to championship in the conference. He makes mathematics challenging, plots outstanding plays for the basketball team, encourages his track boys to go that extra mile, and is a friend and inspiration to his stu- dents. The Annual Staff, with respect and admiration for his abilities and high moral stan- dards, dedicates the 1967-68 EAGLE to Mr. Jim Bader. Lois Persons Sheila Wisegarver Mike Smith 0 Martha Smith Cherene Kingston 8 Many of the events of the 1967-1968 school year were brought to mind as the Eagle staff looked at some pictures included in this yearbook. Some were funny but others brought a painful twinge as we recalled a not-so- happy moment. It is our hope that the 1968 Eagle will help you recall the “characters” and their antics that made this year so memorable. Staff Adviser Mrs. Firman Henricks Board of Education These seven men of the 1 968 Board of Education strived this year to make our educational facilities more adequate and suffi cient. We should all appreciate their work. STANDING: Duane Riddle, Ronnie Edwards, Howard Gantz, Lester Baker. SEATED: Franklin Kingston, secretary; Robert Moberly, President; John Leischner. This page sponsored by R H. MOBERLY, Deland, and GRANT’S CONSTRUCTION, Monticello To the Students, In these trying and tense times what ideas, beliefs and values should one generation hope to pass to the next? What will happen to the Class of ’68 between now and 1978 no one can say with any certainty at all, but we do know there will be problems to solve personal, political, and social (not to mention the interplanetary problems). If, by example, teachers and parents can communicate the absolute need for intelligent use of all man’s resources, his brain, his heart, his hands and his technology, it is more than possible this will be an adequate inheritance to pass on to each succeeding generation. Hope for mankind is possible if man uses his intelligence, if his values are sound, and if his beliefs are based on truth. Each generation must discover truth in its own way, but hope is transmitted from one generation to the next. To the Students, There are two basic parts to being a successful member of our society. The first is being happy, satisfied, and self- sufficient as a person. The second is being a contributing member to society in the areas of productive economics, government, and the welfare of others. You can accomplish one or the other and still not be a successful member of our society. At DeLand-Weldon High School, we cannot give you ei- ther ingredient to becoming this successful member of soci- ety, but we can offer you the opportunity of learning to de- velop the above mentioned ingredients. Notice I say “the opportunity of learning to develop.” The learning and devel- oping are up to the student, not the teacher or the parent. If you are a senior, 1 sincerely hope you have learned to successfully develop happiness, satisfaction, self-sufficiency, ability to produce economically, welfare toward others, and governmental action. You should realize that, for a success- ful citizen, this learning to develop never ceases. Underclassmen need to grasp the opportunity of learning to develop the ingredients for success. The future demands on citizens will be greater than we can even conceive at this moment. To survive as a successful citizen will take more and more earnest work and thought. I hope you all are the successful citizens I have described above. Our future depends on it. Thank you for the 1967-68 school year. FFA The purpose for which this chapter is formed is to devel- op competent, aggressive, rural and agricultural leadership. Farm production, agricultural mechanics, and related occu- pations are taught in the agriculture classes. Industrial Arts Industrial arts involves many interesting skills such as working with sheet metals, plastics, electricity, plaster, leather crafts, and rug looms. This page sponsored by FARMER CITY FERTILIZES CHEMICAL CO., Farmer City Home Economics Mrs. Leischner teaches the Home Ec. classes at D-W High School. Science The science classes at DeLand-Weldon learned the importance of exper- imenting. Although much knowledge was gained from the lectures of Mr. Edman and Mr. Erickson, the students were able to see scientific reactions during experiments. This enabled them to test the theories they had learned. English and French Language, whether French or English, is one of the im- portant means of communication. Mrs. Hudson taught the College Prep course for Seniors and the Junior English classes. Mr. Woodress taught French and English. Mr. Lan- tay taught one class of Sophomore English. Because of their time and effort, we go on into the world better educated. This page sponsored by ARMSWORTH APPLIANCES, Monticello and NATIONAL BANK OF MONTICELLO 21 History is both as old as the ages and as young as the cur- rent political campaigns. A study of history includes learn- ing about people and places and how they affected events that have occurred. To study events that have happened to gain a better understanding of the world of tomorrow is a principal aim of the history courses. History instructors at DWHS were Mrs. Imig, Mrs. Huehner and Mr. Lantay. Social Sciences Expanding business and industry are an important part of the world of tomorrow. The key to this ever expanding world is learning how to operate the new machines, how to program these machines, and how to use the information these machines provide. The development of these skills to help the student after he is out of school is the main objec- tive of the business department. Mrs. Houser and Mrs. Hen- ricks taught Business Education. Business Education Math The Mathematics Department branched out to three different teachers this year. Mr. Blue taught the basics of Geometry and Practical Math to his students. Algebra I and II, and Advanced Math were taught by Mr. Bader. With a combined effort from Mrs. Houser and Mr. Bader, the MBA class arranged a “Compu- ter Match-Up.” 25 Physical Education Physical education classes are taught by Coach Dobbs and Coach Erickson for the boys, Mrs. Trigg and Mrs. Hou- ser for the girls. 26 « T | ccmn |®nda Ea st ha ? ’ C, Y is Riddle ’ Cheryl Primmer, Curt Parrish. You are gone Forever like the moment when the rain Has ceased. And long before each separate dawn The needles of sharp longing cause new pain. I rise and dress and breathe, remembering Your secret heart held thoughts I never knew. All your lost words confront me with one ring Of clarity. 1 bend and tie a shoe, 1 slowly brush my hair, 1 close a drawer. The words 1 speak hurt with a sudden tlame. I find the morning paper at the door, I mouth each word; my speech is slow and lame. I tend to things 1 always did before, Performing them as if they were the same. 99 Senior Biographies SHERRI ANDERSON Pep Club 1 ,2; FHA 4; Senior Play LYNN ATTEBERRY FFA 1 ,2,3,4. Let’s go.” The Class of ’68 became quite familiar with these phrases on their class trip to Florida. The class toured St. Augustine, Rock City, Marineland, Cypress Gardens, and Silver Springs, as well as Daytona Beach. Would you believe they went out to eat and shop during a hurricane? Would you believe the class got drenched everytime they left their rooms at Daytona? Would you believe they got lost in Tennessee? Yes, it’s all true. Other interesting tidbits in- clude a shaving cream fight among the boys, a few people getting thrown into the swimming pool, and several loud yells from the chaperone’s room? Despite the weather, would you believe the class is ready to go back again?
