We, the staff of the 64 Eagle, have been forced with the problem of capturing between two covers the events of the past year. We have attempted to capture in picture the high- lights that will recall the details of the 1963- 1964 school year. SHIRLEY BAKER LYNDA NEBEL NANCY SCOTT SANDRA TUDOR SONJA JOHNSON Dedication We, the seniors of 64 wish to dedicate the ‘64 EAGLE to Donald Moody, our English Teacher. For his good sense of humor and in- teresting approach to the world of literature, we wish to show our appreciation. Mr. Moody came with us and saw us through four years of high school. As our sponsor when we were freshmen and now as our Guidance Counselor, he has helped us to do many things and has helped many of us to decide what our future will be. Superintendent’s Message Each individual progresses in life through a succession of teachers and each new mind we approach seems to require an abdication of part of our past and present pos- sessions. Every mind is offered its choice between truth and letargy. You must choose-you can never have both. Most often we vacillate between the two, never quite attaining either. If lethargy predominates, we accept the first creed, the first philosophy, the first political party we meet. We get rest, we exist, we have a good time, but we shut the door of truth. If the love of truth predominates, we will abstain from dogmatism, we will submit to the inconvenience of suspense and imperfect opinion, but we will feel a sense of fulfillment that is unequalled. If we are to learn truth we must communicate. We must learn the language of facts. The most wonderful inspirations die with their subject if we cannot interpret them to ourselves and to others. We are all wise. The difference between persons is not in wisdom but in art; and the art of communication is the goal of education. I may truly say to the students of DeLand-Weldon High, “I am present at the sowing of the seed of the world. ’ You will determine the fruit ofthisseedby your wise or other- wise decision. Jack Salmon Marie White Secretary Principal ' s Message Jonathon Swift, a British satirist, once stated, Whoever makes two ears of corn, or two blades of grass to grow where only one grew before, deserves better of mankind, and does more essential service to his country than the whole race of politicians put togehter. The above quotation is a realistic challenge to our rural youth. One facet of mind leads us directly to the realization of the importance of you as an individual. In our country you have the opportunity to educate yourself, to worship as you wish, to work in your chosen fields of interest, and to rise as high as you desire! By your daily work, by your dreams, by your attitude, by your behavior, by your patience, by your plans, and by your decisions - you determine to a great extent your ©wn future. You are not a nobody - you are an individual - you are a some- body! 1 Respectfully, Denzil R. Halcom Board of Education David Player, who runs the elevator in Weldon, is one of the newest members on the board. Kathleen Dalton, Bertha Welch, Lena Danison, Fern Fisher — Math Mathematics is the science treating of the exact relations existing between quantities or magnitudes and opera- tions, and of the methods by which quantities sought are deducible from others known or supposed. In order to graduate, students must have at least two years of math. Freshmen choose either practical math, which was taught by Mr. Holste, or Algebra I, taught by Mr. Banks. Those taking practical math take Algebra I their sophomore year; those taking Algebra take plane geometry. In plane geometry students study two dimensional figures. Geometry is supposed to help one learn to think logically. This year Mr. Banks had twenty- seven sophomores in his geometry class. Algebra II is for students who have completed Algebra I and most students have completed plane geometry. The class consisted of nine boys and one girl. Three seniors took modem math. This is the most advanced mathematics course taught in our high school. It consists of one semester of trigonometry and one semester of solid geometry, and modern mathematics. General science — This is the freshman ' s introduc- tion to scientific method. The Sophomores ' main worries in litera- ture are the novel SILAS MARNER and the play JULIUS CAESAR. They study the parts of the sentence clauses, and verbs in grammar. English In French II the students learn the com- plicated verb forms. In second year French they enjoy the singing more be- cause they can understand them. and French In French I the students learn nouns and simple verb forms. The Seniors in English IV studied the play HAMLET by Shakespeare. They also attended the play at Millikin. Contrary to popular belief that Chaucer was a new saucer for chocolate milk, they found out that he was the person who wrote CANTERBURY TALES. Their big project in grammar was writ- ing a term paper. Social Science The six seniors and eleven sopho- mores in World History study the civilizations of the Old World. Their favorite saying is by Santayana; Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. The seniors in American Problems study problems of the American Government, theU.S. Constitu- tion, and the 111. Constitution. A good saying for the seniors to remember was said by Lord North; All power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. mm Commerce In bookkeeping the stu- dents get lots of practice in addition because they have to do two practice sets a year plus their daily exercises. One of the jobs of the office monitor is to run the ditto machine. Here we see Shirley run- ning off the schedule of the week ' s events. Danny Shofner, one of the office practice stu- dents, is putting Books into the storage room. In shorthand II the students learn about office procedures, take dictation, and transcribe letters. Home Making The freshmen in Homemaking learn the p’s and q’s of serving meals. The Sophomore class studies the cuts of meats and colors that look best for different complexions. Family Living students discuss many prob- lems which they will face after marriage. Agriculture The agriculture classes learn much about farming and agronomy in general. Every boy has a project which he does his best to develop and on which he keeps records. To those continuing as farmers, the information acquired in the classroom on grain production, stock, soil con- servation, and farm management will be most valuable. Mr. Moody, guidance counselor Guidance Mr. Moody advises Doug Halcomb, Bob Leischner, and Dean Parrish concerning their future careers. Physical Education Ail students take physical education, which includes wrestling, tumbling, volleyball, floor soccer, baseball, basketball, and track for boys and archery, volley tennis, volleyball, and badminton for girls. Both girls and boys take one six weeks of swimming. The P.E. students also take the physical fitness tests. SOCIETY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Association of Secondary Principals founded the National Honor Society forty-three years ago. There are more than ten thousand chapters of this society in American schools throughout the world. The declared purpose of the society is to create an enthusiasm for Scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render Service, to promote Leadership, and to develop Character in America ' s students. Membership in this chapter is based on four points: a grade average of at least 4. 25, Leadership, Service, and Character. Candidates are elected to the society by the high school faculty. The National Honor Society in DeLand-Weldon Senior High began in 1962 with the induction of eight members by the Clinton chapter. Two of the students were held over until 1963 when they inducted six students. Two of these students, Loretta Kidd and Allyne Remmers, were held over unti l 1964 at which time they conducted the induction ceremonies during which John Bergland, Jeanne Hopkins, Diane Westray, and Sam Baker were inducted.
