SPOTLIGHT STAFF 1954-1955 KAY FLOYD - - - PAT GOODMON - LEOTA JILES - - JACK GOODMON DEAN SMITH - - Editor Junior Assistant Editor Organizations Editor Assistant Editor Business Manager DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of the DeLand -Weldon Senior High School wish to commend and honor a man who has earned our highest esteem. Throughout our school years he has done his job quietly and well with the utmost of will- ingness and cooperation. We salute his loyalty and sense of duty as traits which we can only attempt to acquire. A good sense of humor and droll wit have made him somewhat of an institution to our school. For these reasons we do hereby dedicate the 1955 edition of the SPOTLIGHT to JOHN ADAMS. ANNUAL STAFF SENIOR CLASS SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE y r r  ■if To the Graduating Class of 1955: Have you ever stopped to think how many were in your class four years ago? Or how many were in the seventh grade? Or the first grade? Many have dropped out for various reasons. All of us, at times, have felt like dropping out somewhere along the line. May I congratulate you for your finishing the course--but let me hasten to say that it is not the end. This is only the beginning of those greater things to come. ,y 0i m, x y How we pride ourselves on how much more we can do in less time than those before us! How advanced and more efficient we are! So, in the same manner we can point with pride to the fact that your school is better because you were graduated from it; that you left rich heritages and traditions and have brought honor to your alma mater. I am extremely happy to have been associated with your class. •- - • JOHN LEISCHNER LORIN SWARTZ ERNEST HARPER BOARD O F EDUCATION HUGH BERGLAND OTTIS FLOYD LLOYD REESER KENNETH COTHERN PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To the Students: How often have you heard it said that fur- ther schooling, new positions, new a- chievements, and new accomplishments are desirous but that there was a doubt to attempt these things because of fear of failure? w In our high school education we are taught that it is a disgrace to fail. We are prepared to go out and succeed. Very little is said about failure. The word is taboo and yet all of us will fail again and again. Such success that we do achieve is made of previous failures. From the first faltering steps of a baby learning to walk — through the 168 dif- ferent substances which Edison tried, bamboo, thread, human hair, metal fil- aments, as he searched for the proper incandescent glow for an elecuic light-- people have learned through the wise use of their failures. Why be afraid of failure? Failure m no disgrace. The lives of the greatest men have grown great by trying the impossible, and they have died trying. Even if we fail and never succeed, there is a chance that what we do may have success in others. There have been people who found their only justifica- tion in lives beyond their day. The sad smile of Lincoln, the rags of St. Francis, the tattered shoes of Johnny Appleseed, the blood-siained cross of Christ- -these are all the symbols of scornful failure that built triumph in a fu- ture they never enjoyed. Don’t be afraid of failures. Use them to make success. Looking in on CARL TUDOR ' S Toast of the Universe on the 21st day of May, in the year 1965, we find that the guests of honor are the 1955 graduates of the former DeLand -Weldon Senior High School at DeLand, Illinois. Carl starts by introducing the Flower of the Musical World, JACK KNISLEY. In his band we find DONNIE FUGATE playing the drums and LEOTA KNISLEY, the former LEOTA JILES, assisting Donnie on the cymbals. We wonder how Leota got her job ! ! ! KAY FLOYD, Mrs. Liberace, who plays Rocket Lane Blues is happily married to guess who and is first on the program. She gives recognition to her and her husband’s hairdresser, DALLAS SHAW. In the audience we find JACK BEHRENS, coach for the Harlem Globetrotters, and his two famous cheerleaders- -HELEN CARR and MARY WEAVER. They have just returned from Europe. Seated directly behind them is JACK GOODMON, bat boy for the Moon Destroyers. Present on the stage are: TOM REYNOLDS, a Captain Video Ranger, PHILIP FLASH LIS- ENBY, now Flash Gordan ' s assistant, and last the famous planeteer, MAX SWARTZ, who has just discovered the new planet Hophebiamnorlene while cruising through the universe in his atomic -powered rocket ship. BOB JONES, a guest singer from Hit Parade, sings the top song of the decade, Falling Through Space which he made famous. Tonight MARY ELLEN REMMERS is unveiling the Lincoln -Mercury new atomic -powered Model T. Seated in it we find GEORGE MASSEY, the famous chauffeur of LOIS ROBERTS, Universe ' s Lonely Hearts Advisor. As the Model T is unveiled the cameraman, STEVE SWANSTROM, switches his camera to the audience to catch the expression of DEAN SMITH, Chief Engineer for General Motors, who is, of course, spying! We see the latest fashions from the Moon with EDNA SVESTKA modeling them. By the way, they are tall girl fashions. A preview is given of the World’s renowned stock car driver, JIM JORDAN ' S new movie, Jimmy Bright, an atomic-powered reproduction of Johnny Dark. CARL TUDOR announces that next week ' s program will feature KATHRYN KING, demon- strating her universal judo holds. At the close of the program we hear a word from the alternate sponsor, Cimota, reducing tablets; spelled backwards it means Atomic. Advertising these is the interplanetary dietitian, NORMA FOLLOWELL. Upon our leaving the theater we see EUGENE SPELLBRING, the New York TV Studio ' s Custodian. He tells us that he still has his motorcycle. Walking down to the rocket ship port we meet ETHEL LOIS REYNOLDS, who operates the space gates there. She informs us that JIM SCHUTTE is a librarian at the Library of Congress and is trying to sell FRANCES TAYLOR ' S devastating new book, Jupitor ' s Lowest Peak. Returning home we are happy to relate that the class of 1955 has been a rocketing success! LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of DeLand-Weldon Senior High School, County of Piatt, State of Illinois, being of questionable mental ability and feeble mem- ory, big heart and slim purse, do hereby bequeath our precious possessions to our lucky successors in these halls of learning.
