SENIOR CLASS HISTORY At the beginning of our sophomore year we entered the big school of DeLand -Weldon Senior High which seemed new and very big to us all who were completely awed. June Franklin joined us then and a little later Margaret Radley joined our class. Our junior year was, of course, very important. We ordered class rings and planned the Junior-Senior Prom. Evert Keur joined us at the beginning of this year and we lost Earl Thomas at about the middle of the year. We also Thelma Yates and Joanne Schroeder this year. We chose a nautical theme for the prom. It w as lots of work as we made most of our decorations but I think we had as much fun getting ready for the prom as at the prom itself. During our last year we were amazed by our senior pictures as we were our sophomore year about the new school. We were also very busy selling ads, annuals and ordering announcements. We had classmates active in band, chorus, FHA, FFA, GAA, annual staff, librarians, paper staff and the play. We had our ups and downs through these three years but I ' m sure we all recall the better parts of the years. SENIOR CLASS WILL We the Senior Class of DeLand -Weldon Senior High School, counties of Piatt and Dewitt, cities of DeLand and Weldon, state of Illinois, do hereby make public and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former wills by us at anytime heretofore made. First we will all the Senior High teachers to the Junior Class and all we have taught them. Second we will the boys of the Junior Class the parking lot in back of Senior High in hopes they will take good care of the girls. Charles Baker wills to Jan Ruby his noisy shoes hoping they will make as much noise in walking down the hall as they did when he had them. Beverly Shaw wills her ability to be undecided to Patsy Swartz and Shirely Lane. Myrtle Ensign wills her shortness to Sharon Sparks wondering if she will enjoy it as much as Myrtle has. Arthur Beck wills his ability to play basketball to Evelyn Hoops and may she follow the rules. Terry Glynn wills his nickname Duck to Marilyn Massey hoping Jughead likes flat feet. Sheridith McC ready wills her ability to become engaged to Eileen Followell. James Smith wills his burr haircut to Sylvan Franklin and be sure to take good care of it. Sylvan. Veda Mae Parrish wills to Phil Whiteside her temper wishing him not too much unhappiness. Marilyn Twist wills her basketball abilities to Gray Reeser and be sure to make the first team next year, Gray. Joe Sprague wills his ability to tease Mrs. Paterson and his straight A ' s to Keith Bames. June Franklin wills all of her soldiers to Agnes Wilson and wishes that Agnes will enjoy their company. Evert Keur wills his tallness to Ronnie Baker and may Ronnie grow to be a towering giant. Harold Allan wills Margaret Gantz to Rob Roy Twist and Roger Perkins to see that she isn ' t lonesome at school next year. Wayne Clifton wills his knowledge of biology back to Miss DeAtley and hopes that it will increase her wisdom ever more. Margaret Radley wills her quietness to Fred Gift, and Fred, be sure to use it next year. Donna Cozad wills all her sweaters to Delores Monkman and Joanne Webb hoping they will look as good in them as she does. Beverly Swartz wills all her old steadies and her ability to go steady to Jackie Benge. Betty Rule wills her love for shorthand to Jim Pearl and Phil Mullvain, and boys, try to do better. Jack Grant wills his nickname Beetsy to Bill Gift. Richard Lubbers wills his Chevrolet and any senior girl he wants to Steve Goodmon. Jack Carr wills his music ability to Barbara Kallembach and hopes she will learn as quickly as he did. Norma Jean Barton wills her ability to hold a conversation to James Massey and Bob Norton and think that they should never be lonely. CLASS PROPHECY In the year of 1962, we are found cruising along at 3, 000 mph in oui Stratosphere Cruiser designed by Art Beck while employed by Lockheed. Our first stop at a Belgian Congo airfield we meet Jack Carr, famous scientist, explorer, adventurer, and geologist, who is about to leave on a trip into Africa. As we leave for a tour of the city, we hop into a taxi driven by Jack Grant, the owner of the Grant Taxi Cab Chain. Our visit here was climaxed by a dinner served in Mert ' s Restaurant owned by Myrtle Ensign. As we board the plane to resume our journey, we find our hostess to be Marilyn Twist who is happy in her job and seems interested in a handsome pilot named John. As we approach the Tokyo Airport we pass over a huge lingerie factory operated by James Smith and Richard Lubbers where the worlds finest silks are modeled by June Franklin. Our entertainment for the evening was an outstanding demonstration of the latest dancing steps by Joe Sprague and his assistant Veda Parrish, who also runs the Parrish Telephone Co. in Tokyo. Coming back to the cruiser we find a large ship carrying samples of the latest criminal equip- ment designed by the Allan and Keur Detective Agency. Finally we land in a typical U.S. city, where we find Norma Barton is still single. We were disappointed to find Margaret Radley suffering from a slight case of flu which she contacted while abroad with her husband General John Cornwell. As we drive in the country we pass the famous Duroc Ranch where we find Charles Baker engaged in swine raising. He is married and has twin boys. His neighbor is Beverly Shaw who manages a chain of Woolworth dime stores. She has a new 1962 Chevie with dual holly woods. Returning to the city we read posters advertising the approaching exhibition game of out -standing basket- ball players which includes the All-American Terry Glynn. Walking down Main Street we pass a garage owned and operated by Wayne Clifton. It is rumored that Wayne has the latest thing in hot-rods. The former Beverly Swartz has given up her position as an interior decorator and is now living in New York with her husband and two children. Crossing the street we come upon the Miller and Son Hardware Store. Mrs. Miller is the former Sheredith McCready. About to run out of gas, we stop at a filling-station run by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Edwards. Mrs. Edwards is the former Donna Cozad. Leaving we hear the Senator, Betty Rule closing one of her speeches on opium and marijuana in the widespread campaign against narcotics. Happy to return from such a pleasant journey, we report that the senior class of 1952 has a good start on the future. ANNUAL STAFF R. BAKER J. BENGE E. FOLLOWELL S. FRANKLIN M. GANTZ B. GIFT F. During the year we lost two members, Juanita Cunningham who moved to Green Valley, and Neva Burns, who moved to Clinton. We won first place in the freshman tournament at junior high during the second semester. During the month of March, the junior high gave a comedy entitled The Baby Sitter. Seven freshmen participated in the play. During our sophomore year at senior high, we lost Herbert Burton, who joined the Navy; Leonard Franklin, who joined the Air Corps; Joe Tool, who moved to the vicinity of Rantoul; Edward King, who moved to Mt. Pulaski; Marie Watkins, who moved to Clinton; and Janet Lashbrook, who dropped out. We were received by the senior high with a hearty welcome --the initiation. Evelyn Hoops, who came from Clinton, moved to Weldon in the spring of ' 51 to join our class. As juniors we started with 26 class members. During the summer we lost Doris Ann Webb, who moved to Rock Island, Illinois. Our play The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was a big success and we hope the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom on May 9, 1952, will go over as well. We are looking forward to being high and mighty seniors. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY As we embarked on our junior high career we had 46 representatives. During the year we lost one member. Seven of our classmates performed in the junior high play, The Boarding House Reach. ” The ninth grade basketball team won the Freshmen Tourney. When we entered senior high we had a class of 34 green sophomores. During the first few weeks of school we were thoroughly initiated into senior high. Later in the year we gave the Halloween party. In November, a new sophomore, Keith Barnes, moved to Weldon from Iowa. Our entire class likes the DeLand -Weldon Senior High and we are looking forward to our future junior and senior years here. s. F.F.A The DeLand-Weldon Chapter of Future Farmers of America began the year with 31 members, 22 of which were chapter farmers and 9 of which’ were green hands. The chapter farmers were Harold Allan, Charles Baker, Arthur Beck, Jack Carr, Wayne Clifton, Jack Grant, Donald Hiter, Richard Lubbers, James Smith, Joe Sprague, Ronald Baker, Sylvan Franklin, Fred Gift, Bill Gift, Steve Goodmon, James Massey, Phil Mullvain, Bob Norton, James Pearl, Gray Reeser, Rob Roy Twist, and Phil Whiteside. The green hands were Stewart Allan, Andrew Burgess, Junior Eastham, James Norton, Dewey Roberts, Jerry Schroeder, Bob Sprague, Bob Stone, and Darman Clifton. Officers elected for the year were Jack Carr, President; Richard Lubbers, Vice President; James Smith, Secretary; Sylvan Franklin, Treasurer; Phil Whiteside, Reporter; Steve Goodmon, Sentinel. A Program of Work was prepared for the year and entered in the national contest. Plans for making money during the year included collecting scrap paper, continuing to sell popcorn at the school functions through the G.A.A • agreement, selling pencils with the basketball schedule printed on them, selling Eagle tags for License plates, and selling a fat barrow from the chain gilt project to Jack Grant. A Ralph Pierce magic show was given with the chapter receiving a portion of the receipts. A Parent and Son Banquet was planned for the spring and the parliamentary procedure contest was to be held for the second straight year in the D-W High School. During 1951-1952 the chapter entered the parliamentary procedure contest, the dairy judging contest, and the beef judging contest where it placed Third, Fifth, and Seventh respectively. The grain and poultry judging contests were also entered but without much success. The dairy judging team placed in the top third at the State contest while the beef judging team placed in the lower one third. The Parent and Son Banquet was held with much success and it was the largest one in the history of the D-W Unit. Proving successful also was the chain gilt project which is still in its infancy. A two day trip was taken to Chicago in the spring of ' 51 which was very educational. Starting the 52 activities was the pest control contest the purpose being to rid the community of pests. This year has bought advancement and experience to the F.F.A. members under the guidance of Mr. Harper, our advisor. We hope the future will bring additional improvements as the members work to make VOC-AGR and essential subject for preparing America ' s future farmers. All the boys have at least one project this year with some having two and three. The sophomore class has 9 boys. There are 5 swine projects, 3 beef projects, and 1 poultry project. The junior class has 12 members with 6 swine projects, and 2 crop projects.
