i EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lieutenant Commander R. S. CUMMING, a native of Elkton, Md., received his commission in 1954 from Officer Candidate School after graduating from Oglethorpe University with a BS in biological science. He served aboard USS KNAPP QDD-6535 after graduating from CIC Officer School. He next attended the COMCRUDESPAC Engineering School and then served as Engineering Officer of the USS BUCK CDD-7615. In 1959 he was assigned as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to COMINEPAC and was then transferred to Commander Operational Development Force as Aide and Flag Lieutenant. His assignment as Commanding Officer, USS LIPAN QATF-85? gave Lieutenant Commander CUMMING his first afloat command homeported in Pearl Harbor. Lieutenant Commander CUMMING was then assigned to Commander U. S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam as Staff Operations and Plans Officer. It was during this period that he was awarded the Bronze Star with combat V and CINCPACFLT Commendation along with the Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal First Class.
