To begin our freshman year We elected class officers. They were John Cousins-President, Dick Sherry-Vice- President, Betty Williamson-Secretary, Joanne McMeans-Treasurer, and Kay Schrecengost-Historian. Our advisors were Mr. Bennett and Mr. Decock. Our first activity was a Friday the 13th dance which proved to be very successful. As sophomores we started the year by electing new class officers. They were John Cousins-President, Jim Wilson-Vice-President, Betty Williamson-Secretaryg and Joanne McMeans-Treasurer. Mr. Evans. Miss Black, and Mr. Reitz were our advisors. During that year we chose our class motto-- Onward and Upwardv, class colors- turquoise and white, and class Hower-white rose. We also held a dance as our one activity. In August of '56 we began our junior year which proved to be a very exciting one for us. In October we carried on the tradition of having the Halloween dance with many ghosts and witches present. Tom Brice-President, John Cousins- Vice-President, Harriet McCarty-Secretary, Joanne McMeans-Treasurer, were the new class officers, and Mrs. Helm and Mr. Iole were our advisors. Newt on our agenda was the choosing of our classrings. After having a long dis- cussion of prices and styles, we finally chose the ones We wanted, and we showed them with great pride after they arrived. Since the new gym was finished, we were able to present a junior play. With the assistance of Mr. Baker and Mr. Iole, We presented Shy Guyf' a three-act comedy. In May we turned to one of our biggest festivities of the year, the Junior Prom. Our theme was Tropical Moonlightv for which we decorated the gym with palms and scenes from the Tropics. The music of James Ryder and his Melody Five was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Alma Matthews and Joanne Priester were chosen to attend the queen in her court. Their escorts were Tom Brice and Dick Sherry. In 1957 when we entered our last year at Dayton Joint High School, we were filled with sadness because of the death of Louise Wolfe, a fellow classmate. Our class had reduced from 86 in our freshman year to 63 in our senior year. For our senior class officers, we elected Tom Brice-President, Connie Lienweber- Secretary, and Joanne McMeans-Treasurer. Our senior advisors were Mrs. Leek and Mr. Baker. Now that we were seniors, we had many duties to fulfill throughout the year. We had the usual job of the seniors, to plan and to produce a yearbook. The staff was chosen for this task and they were the following: James Griffith-Editor, Joanne Priester-Co-Editor, James Wilson-Photography Editor, Joanne Mc- Means and Darrell Shirey-Business Managers, and Veljean Kline-Typing Edi- tor. Nancy Marshall, Rosalie Rupp, Janet Cornman, Eleanor WValter and Tom Brice were also on the staff and Mrs. Leek was the advisor. In September we held the first dance of the year which was well attended. Early in November we presented our senior play Scatterbrain,,, a three-act comedy. Mr. Baker was the coach and Mr. Iole was in charge of the stage. In December we held our annual Christmas Party. We had lunch, exchanged and opened our gifts, and later danced in the gym. On May 2 we were guests of the juniors at the prom. Our senior banquet, senior trip, and class day presentation were the only events left before Baccalaureate and Commencement. After the last two events our days at DJHS were completed. As we leave, the doors of the school close behind usg the doors of our many and various futures open before us. 27 enior pfay ,Siu ffvrgru in Upper picture, left to right: Nancy hIill'Sl12llI, Dum-ll Shircv, Pnulinc- Bus saml. ,Ivan Cnllivr, Cmmiv l.cinwvlw1', Bn-ity XvillilllllSOil. wer picture: Ilivk Slwrry, Num-y llllulllllll, Tum Brice, Hzu'ric'tt YXIc'C:1rty nlmmm- lJl'li'Sl1'l', llllilj' Lluyml. 28 enior pfag .sbaffergrain CAST Mrs. Dolly Dean, the ascatterbraini' .........,.... The new experimental launching site has just been completed at Cape Dublin along Glade Run. In charge of rocket launching operations is Dr. Werner von Wilson. Dr. Wilson is ably assisted by Richard Stiteler, head of the atomic fuels research team. The first rocket to be fired at the new launching site will be the D. H. S.- 58.', The 58 was designed by Bob Jamison and manufactured by the Williamson Rocket Corporation. Ralph and Raymond have acquired considerable wealth through the discovery of uranium on their jointly owned farm. The purpose of this flight is to rocket,, the class of 1958 from Dayton Joint High School to the moon for a reunion. This is the first time the class will have been together since our graduation ten years ago. Along with the Williamson boys, Richard Sherry, multi- millionaire oil tycoon is helping to finance the excursion. The crew is now boarding the ship in prep- aration for the flight. Our chief mechanics are Charles Miller, Bill McKee, and Dale Farster. Acting as stewardesses are Rosalie Rupp and Peggy Hyskell. Plotting our course is our chief navigator john Kammerdiener. The loading ramp is now in place and the passengers are coming aboard. Among the many passengers entering the ship, we see Ethel Eckman, a renowned singer of folk songs, ac- companied by Iames Ferguson, her musical director. Next we see Don Dinger, world famous wrestler and strongman. Don's manager and trainer, john Cousins, is following closely be- hind. Cale McLaughlin, MC-M's fabulous new screen success is boarding the ship with Kay Schrecengost, his personal secretary. Among the many celebrities entering the ship, we find lean Collier and George McCoy. Their operation of the McCoy Dance Studios has been a huge success. Joanne Priester now boarding the ship is the art director at our old Alma Mater. Mrs. Leek's new mathematics assistant, E l e a n 0 r Walter, and Roberta McCaughey, an elementary teacher, are preparing for the flight. James Grif- fith now well established in the automobile business, has just started a helicopter agency in Cuba. Now being seated in the rocket are Harriett McCarty, famous New York fashion model, and Louise Kunselman, her personal beautician. Coming through the port side of the ship is Nancy Marshall, district manager of the Echo Branch of the Dayton Banking System. The passengers are soon aboard and we blast,' off: our destination, the Earth space sta- tion. We had been in flight for some time when Don Dinger got hungry. The thought of food was appealing to all of us, so we went to the ship's cafeteria. Our enormous appetites were satisfied by the fine lunch prepared by Garnet Hollenbaugh, Joyce Wolfe, and Patty Preteroti. After the meal Nancy Hallman, the publi- city agent for the Hallman Feed Company, had a conference with Janet Comman. a commercial artist. Nancy was briefing Janet on the new ad- vertising scheme for Wayne Tail Curler. jim Barrett our communications man, is now contacting space station in preparation for landing. While jack Schultz and Jim Craig began their job of refueling our rocket, we took a few minutes to inspect the space station. flop With our arrival at the space station mid- way between Earth and the moon, We find that many of our old classmates are employed at various positions. One of the first persons we meet is Connie Leinweber, the social director for the space station. Connieis job is to plan rec- reation for people stationed there. She will show us around the space station and explain the various functions of the station to us. In the radar room we find Ken Adams. Ken will track our flight to our destiny, the moon. In the weather room Elzie Ferringer and Ver- non Doverspike, experts in agriculture, are studying the effects of outer space on Earth's vegetation. In the health room is Maxine Jami- son, the stationls psychologist, reading a long lyric poem by Mr. Baker, extolling our many successes. Judy Lloyd, now a registered nurse, is completing the physical examination of Connie Rupp and Frances Kammerdiener in preparation for flight to the moon. Bob Troup, the physical education director, is busy keeping the crew in shape. While enjoying a few leisurely moments before taking OH again, we picked up a copy of the Outerspace Gazettef' from the copy boy, Alvin Deemer. The Gazette is edited by Ioanne McMeans and assisted by Fred Rosenberger. On the social page we notice the wedding an- nouncements of Kay Rupp, Pauline Bussard, and Carrie Galbraith. Tom Brice has been given a iob as a physical therapist in a New York Hospital. Ada Duncan, court reporter for Sen- atorial hearings, had just released the latest in- formation concerning the Kleck investigation committee, to the press. Valjean Kline, court reporter for the Gazette, covered the hearings for the paper. if QC? The intercom blasts out, We will blast off in fifteen minutesf, With the addition of passen- gers from the space station, our crowded ship proceeded on its way to the moon. Through the port side of the rocket we see the moon gradually grow clearer and soon we are landing our space ship on the landing pad. As we land on the moon, we are just in time to see Darrell Shirey crossing the finish line and receiving a winning kiss from Miss Universe Alma Mathews. Darrel has just established a new lunar speed record of three light years per minute. We are escorted to the metropolis by the two space cadets, Donald Nelson and Don Rob- inson, along with their platoon sergeant, Bob Silvis. - Bob has informed us that Larry McLaughlin is now undergoing special training for a test flight to Venus. On our way to the metropolis, we pass a branch of the Templeton Refractories Company. Glen Sharrer is acting as general foreman in the new plant. Our route takes us past the metropolis post office and our eyes fall upon a Wafv poster. Upon further investigation we find Sgt. Made- lyn Maurer, recruiter for the Wafs, trying to persuade Virginia Simmers to enlist. We finally arrive at the community center which is to house our reunion. Nylene Bashline, a successful secretary, distributed our copies of the class poem. Betty Lou Williamson, the music teacher at Shannock Valley, led our class in the singing of our class song. After an afternoon of fun that was actually gout of this world,', we sadly said farewell to our friends. Before returning to our space ship, how- ever, we did promise to get together again in the near future. Her clothes are always neat and Well chosen. Iodie Armstrong Peggy Jamison A friend of Jennifer's and about the same age, but rather more impudent and lively. Mollie Farrell Io Ann Fox Another friend of Ienniferis cut from the same pattern. Lucy Lee Saunders Myrna Parsell Mollie's cousin and guest. About seventeen, she is every inch a girl. She is curled, perfumed, dainty, dimpled, smiling, charming and oh. so very Southern! She is given to clinging to anything masqueline and is, in general, the kind of girl other girls dislike on sight, and boys make fools of themselves over. Bruce Bartlett Dick Comman Iodieis special property, and about eighteen. He is what is sometimes called smooth, Harry Ames Ron Mateer Mollieis boy friend, also about eighteen and perhaps a little less sharp than Bruce. Tom Iackson Dan Brownell The same age as the others, he is shy and presents a most unrepossessing appearance in the opening scenes, but his manner, his voice and his smile are engaging, and there is something very likable about him. During the course of the play he undergoes a thorough change. Randolph Fitzhugh Bill Conn Perhaps a year or so older than the others and extremely good looking. He is subtly different from the other boys, a little more courtly in his manner, much less casual in his clothes. His accent is just as deep-south as Lucy Lee's and he has a way of looking directly into the eyes of the person to whom he is speaking which the girls find most delightful. 57 Og vary AAi5fanfd Burlmru Ungvr, Putty Wulkvr, Mrs. jewzlrt, Peggy McLaughlin.
