Class Hisfory It was in September of 1953, that our class entered Dayton Joint High School as Freshmen. We welcomed to our ranks new students from the Calhoun, Oliver, and Templeton districts. That year we had one class activity-a Freshmen skate held in the old gym. Our homeroom teach- ers, Mr. Decock and Miss Bish, were our chap- erones. During our sophomore year we selected the yellow rose as our class flower, and aquamarine and white as our class colors. We could not agree upon a motto, so we didn't select one until our Senior year, when Forward ever, backward never was chosen. Our Sophomore officers were: Bernice Marshall . . , ,. President Wendell Alcorn ., , ., Vice President Gary Schrecengost .,.,,. Secretary Cecil McMeans . ..,. Treasurer Roberta Stover , ....,..i.. ., Historian During this our sophomore year, we, for the first time, participated in the election of May Court members. Linda Beck and Janet West became Sophomore attendants with Wendell Al- corn and Ronald Fisher as their escorts. Mr. Evans and Mr. Reitz were our sophomore home- room teachers. As Juniors we moved to the second fioor of Old Main, and began this year with an enroll- ment of seventy-two. Our first activity was the annual Halloween Dance. To set the mood for the evening, we used the customary goblins and cornstalks as decorations, and had fun finding several large iron kettles from which we served cider. Our homeroom teachers, Mrs. Helm and Miss Marietti, were ever ready to help us organ- ize our activities. After spending an afternoon in October dis- cussing the styles and prices of different class rings, we finally made our selection, In Decem- ber the rings arrived and we all enioyed show- ing our beautiful rings to our friends and to our families. When spring came, thoughts were turned to the preparation of our Junior Prom. Blue Paradise was chosen as our theme. The gym was transformed into a bower of soft blue light and shimmering water fountains. Amid the en- chantment of fairy castles, the coronation of May Queen Elaine West and King Larry Walker took place. We were pleased with the results of our first formal dance and believe it was the best prom in D.J.H.S. history. Our class officers were: Bernice Marshall .,,.,...,....,. .. Secretary By September 1956 our class had dwindled from seventy-two to sixty-one members. This year as seniors we naturally participated in many activities. Of course, we had to elect class officers. To lead us through the maze of senior activities we selected: Reed Fisher . ,,...,,.. President Jean Calhoun .. . ,... Vice President Linda Beck , ..., . Secretary Allen Brocious ., ,... . .....,. ..,. T reasurer One of our big iobs was to produce a good yearbook. A staff was selected to supervise the work. A r t Editor Isabelle Hollenbaugh ..,. Typing Editor Linda Beck, Doris Clever, Frances Galbraith, Ken- neth White and Allan Brocious were the assistant editors. Mrs. Leek acted as faculty advisor. Before going home for our Christmas vaca- tion, we enioyed a turkey dinner in the cafe- teria, then we exchanged gifts in our homerooms and danced in the gym. Due to the building program we were un- able to have a iunior play so we were especially anxious to select and produce our senior play. A committee after reading many plays selected Ten O'Clock Scholar. Everyone wanted to be in the cast so try-outs were lively. ln May we were guests of the Junior class at the prom. This event seemed to herald the end of our high school days, for only our senior trip and class day remained before our graduation. After Baccalaureate and Commencement the doors of D.J.H.S. close behind us as we begin our adult life.
