With the start of the 19 64-65 school year also came the Southeastern Washington Fair at Walla Walla. Many Dayton FFA boys exhibited their animals at this show. They won many assorted ribbons. Next came the Columbia County Fair, which many of the chapter members attended. The chapter's livestock judging team won a total of nine banners. Among them were the first place banner won at the state contest at Pullman and the third place banner won at the Spokane Junior Livestock Show in which fifty-nine other teams participated. Meanwhile the chapter's crops judging team won the district con- test for the fourteenth time in fifteen years. They also placed third in the state crops contest at Pullman. Last October five chapter boys attended the National FFA Convention at Kansas City, Missouri. The boys were Eric Thorn, Bill Eslick, Gene Krause, Norman McKinley and Don Gephart. They were accompanied by the Chapter's advisor, Marvin Evers, who while at the convention received the Honorary American Farmer Degree. This spring Jim Harting, Ronald Schafer, Don Gephart, Rick Korsberg, Ted Penner, Jim Erbes, Eric Thorn, and Jay Penner traveled to the State Convention at Pullman. Five of these boys received special awards. The boys and their awards are as follows: Jim Harting, winner of the State Livestock Farmer Degree, Ronald Schafer, winner of the State Farmer Degree, Ted Penner, winner of the Union Pacific Railway Scholarship, Norman McKinley, winner of the new Green Giant Agricultural Scholarship and Jay Penner, winner of the second place award in the State Farm Mechanics division. The Dayton chapter was well represented by Jim Thorn, in the area of public speaking. Thorn won second place at the sub-district contest and fourth place at the district contest. April 24, 1965, the Dayton Pre-show was held. Darrel Huwe paved the way in the FFA beef division. Jim Harting cleaned up in the FFA sheep division. Meanwhile in the swine division there was a toss-up between Gene Krause, Norman McKinley, Loren Laib and Randy Tewalt. Two days later and some 120 miles away from Dayton, Rick Korsberg showed the Grand Champion FFA lamb at the Central Washington Junior Livestock Show at Toppenish. This lamb, along with Rick's help took second place in the fitting and showing contest. One week later, at Spokane, Jim Harting showed the Grand Champion and the Reserve Champion fat lambs in the FFA division. 26
