He has taught English, Driver's Training, all the mathematics courses, Speech and Skills. For three years he coached the Green Peas basketball team and has been advisor to several classes including the class of 1965. As advisor, Mr. Keith has been a great inspiration and a true friend to the class and in his honor We dedicate the 1965 Nesika Wawa. Faculfy Adminisfrafion and Sfaffs School Board S Seated: Mr. Becker, Mr. Broughton, Mr. Neace, Mr. Clizer. Standing: Mr. Casseday, Mr- Payne, MT- Penner. Superinfendenf MR. CLIZER MRS. SPOONEMORE TOMORROW ' S CITI Z ENS This is a plea for our. students to consider the merits and lifetime values of outstanding citizenship training while they are still in school. Earlier in this century emphasis was placed upon the wholesome development of moral, spiritual, and ethical values. Later the emphasis moved more toward social and political ends. Nationalism, patriotism, and republic were words which took on new meanings. Today citizenship training is a very broad term under which we try to build civic responsibility, nationalism, loyalty, social respon sibility, and justice. Today's students should recognize and be able to help formulate new goals for citizenship training tomorrow. Certainly, a background of our political stature in America is important so that we can' better resolve the emerging problems. It is not meant for all differences in ideologies to be solved on the battlefield. Unless a student becomes an active, participating citizen, he will be farther and farther removed from the heart of the elements which made our state and our nation so great in such a short span of time. Our students of today will need to find new ways of dealing with problems of race and religion. But this in itself should develop a more wholesome tolerance for other people and their cultures. Finally, our students should be encouraged to develop characteristics and talents of critical think- ing. Some of yesterday's accepted beliefs no longer fit the true nature of our society today. If we are willing to recognize that change is always with us and if we are willing to act accordingly, we will be doing at least a part of our share in our continuing struggle to keep our country strong, healthy, and free. Charles B. Clizer, Superintendent Dayton Public Schools June 11, 1965 Principal MR. PEASE MRS. PAUL NELSON Secretary PRINCIPAL 'S ME SSAGE Your responsibilities must increase if you are to make progress in life. This last year you have realized this in your class work, your leadership in school activities and at home as well as in the community. When you were underclassmen, you looked to the upper-classmen together with your teachers, parents and others to maintain these responsibilities. As you move toward larger and more demand ing spheres of life, you will find your responsibilities likewise will increase if you are to grow and progress. This is the scheme of lifeg the more responsibilities you have that you can see through to completion, the stronger and more useful you will be to yourself and your fellow man. MR. With the start of the 19 64-65 school year also came the Southeastern Washington Fair at Walla Walla. Many Dayton FFA boys exhibited their animals at this show. They won many assorted ribbons. Next came the Columbia County Fair, which many of the chapter members attended. The chapter's livestock judging team won a total of nine banners. Among them were the first place banner won at the state contest at Pullman and the third place banner won at the Spokane Junior Livestock Show in which fifty-nine other teams participated. Meanwhile the chapter's crops judging team won the district con- test for the fourteenth time in fifteen years. They also placed third in the state crops contest at Pullman. Last October five chapter boys attended the National FFA Convention at Kansas City, Missouri. The boys were Eric Thorn, Bill Eslick, Gene Krause, Norman McKinley and Don Gephart. They were accompanied by the Chapter's advisor, Marvin Evers, who while at the convention received the Honorary American Farmer Degree. This spring Jim Harting, Ronald Schafer, Don Gephart, Rick Korsberg, Ted Penner, Jim Erbes, Eric Thorn, and Jay Penner traveled to the State Convention at Pullman. Five of these boys received special awards. The boys and their awards are as follows: Jim Harting, winner of the State Livestock Farmer Degree, Ronald Schafer, winner of the State Farmer Degree, Ted Penner, winner of the Union Pacific Railway Scholarship, Norman McKinley, winner of the new Green Giant Agricultural Scholarship and Jay Penner, winner of the second place award in the State Farm Mechanics division. The Dayton chapter was well represented by Jim Thorn, in the area of public speaking. Thorn won second place at the sub-district contest and fourth place at the district contest. April 24, 1965, the Dayton Pre-show was held. Darrel Huwe paved the way in the FFA beef division. Jim Harting cleaned up in the FFA sheep division. Meanwhile in the swine division there was a toss-up between Gene Krause, Norman McKinley, Loren Laib and Randy Tewalt. Two days later and some 120 miles away from Dayton, Rick Korsberg showed the Grand Champion FFA lamb at the Central Washington Junior Livestock Show at Toppenish. This lamb, along with Rick's help took second place in the fitting and showing contest. One week later, at Spokane, Jim Harting showed the Grand Champion and the Reserve Champion fat lambs in the FFA division. 26 PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE TEAM Seated, left to right: Mike Canright, Reporterg Rick Korsberg, Secretaryg Norman McKinley, Vice Presidentg Bill Eslick Presidentg Ted Penner, Treasurer.
